Stuart McCall said:On the eve of Tuesday morning's announcement about the Blades new manager Stuart McCall has expressed his best wishes to the Club he has just left.
Neil Warnock's former right-hand man seems set to be unveiled as Bradford City's new boss when he returns from holiday, formally ending his association with United.
He said: "It's disappointing that my five years here ended with relegation which was a great disappointment for us all, but that's football and things like that have a habit of happening."
.McCall remembered his early days at Bramall Lane when he was signed initially just in a playing capacity - but was not selected at the start of the season:
"I was aware when I came as a player that there were some supporters questioning just what I could offer - and I was on the bench initially - so it was very pleasing to go on and prove a point. By the time I stopped I had started around 80 games and played my part in the fantastic 2002/03 season when we challenged for success on three fronts.
He added: "I have been in the game for a long time but played for only four clubs, and I am proud to have played for United just as much as the others.
"I was grateful to get chance to become assistant manager and it was great, in my first full season in that post, to contribute to promotion and then the Premiership campaign.
"Sheffield United fans have always been great to me and I thank them warmly for that, and I also would like to pay tribute to the players, football staff and the behind the scenes staff, both at the Lane and the Academy.
"You make real friendships in this game, in addition to just working with colleagues, and I wish the players, staff and supporters every success."
