I think the Moose is a great striker.
But he does appear to tire after 45-60 mins.
I am not a sports physio , but as a lay observer , I am worried that , having been training with us for so long , his stamina is not improving.

Can anyone explain how a professional young athlete could be taking so long to reach full fitness ?

Presumably his cardiovascular system was checked over before he signed ?

From what I can see, he's a player who's not used to starting games. In his 3 years at Bournemouth, the vast majority of his appearances have been cameos from the bench.

It's going to take him a little while to adapt to the demands of being a regular starter.

I agree with your reasoning, but perhaps it explains how high the standard is, for those who start and finish every game at this level?

There really is no replacement for game time when it comes to building match fitness.
Players need a strong pre season and to get regular games. That means playing at least once a week to make the most of the fitness work done in training. Pushing boundaries and making those muscles used to working to the levels needed for 120 mins.

Mousset is also quite a heavy lad, not overweight but very muscular in the legs. This will take some effort to move about, and with the physique of a sprinter he’s never going to be chasing the ball about and running non stop. So it will be short sharp bursts until we can “re-engineer” him a little.

I doubt we will see Mousset play a full 90 mins this season. He needs to stay injury free and get weekly game time ready for another pre season and the start of next season.
All being well he can start next season for us in the premier league with the legs to start and finish games week in week out.

Agree with all of this, though I reckon Sheff Utd's fitness staff would like to think he'll be able to get in 90 minutes by Spring time ish. That'd be the hope. You're absolutely spot on with body type, which just adds to the problem of going three years without regular game time - and, let's be honest, letting his fitness go a bit.

Worth saying that Bournemouth signed Mousset after a good season at Le Havre in the second tier of French football. He was 19. Started 16 times and came off the bench 12 times, scoring 14 times in the process. He played full 90s a few times, though he was mostly subbed around the 70-80 minute mark. The fact that he played the full 90 in the final three games of the season makes me think his being replaced was less to do with fitness and more to do with youth. Either way, from looking at the numbers of how much he played, I wouldn't say there's anything to be worried about.

I know he's still not at 90 min fitness but seeing him still doing gut busting runs in the 70th minute brought a smile to my face. And his flick to pick out Lunny for the first goal was top drawer stuff. Then another 2 assists followed. Quickly becoming my fan favourite! (a long with alot of other people going by the crowd tonight)

I’m not bothered about his 90 min fitness if he continues with blistering performances in the first 45 with 3 assists every week, then he can come off at half time, have a pie and a pint and rest all week for me.

That touch by Mousset for Lunny’s first may or may not have turned me a little bit gay for a moment.

Moooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooose!!!

What a player!
Blades Legend already!
Superb today against Burnley, the lay off to Lunny was sublime.
A part in all 3 goals.
Chris Wilder has unearthed a priceless diamond!
Top bloke too👍

It was worth going through a couple of duds to end up with one like him.

Half the problem with players building up or maintaining fitness is the lack of reserve team football. Years ago the fringe players or new signings could get a game each week. Correct me if I'm wrong, but now only a few can be selected for the under 23 development matches.

We could end up with Lunny or Fleck out injured and having to call on Morrison to replace one. All good in theory, only he'd have been without competitive football since the unsurprising cup defeat. So he'd be lacking match fitness and sharpness and would naturally play under par.

Oh, I know. Send him out on loan for a month to boost his fitness and get him some competitive football. Nope. Can't do that either due to the closure of the loan windows.

The top sides don't have this problem as they can rotate constantly due to playing in Europe. For everyone else it's a nightmare when you get injuries and suspensions, as your replacements are sluggish and out of practice.

I think clubs put on games behind closed doors for this reason.

I was really underwhelmed by his signing, but he is wonderful.

Lightening quick, with a lovely touch and a goal poachers instinct.

Another wilder nugget of gold.

would play him every minute of every game if we could.

I was listening to some of the commentary on Talksport when we played West Ham
and the commentor said that Eddie Howe tipped Wilder off about Mousset..
saying he had this young player who is very talented but even though he was highly rated by Howe was never going to get game time at Bournmouth.

Dont know how true it is but I do remember Wilder saying he‘s been tracking him a year and tried to get him when we were in the Championship,

He's slowly showing his quality, he's been fantastic for us so far. He was weighed down by a heavy price tag for a relatively unknown player and he's been a breath of fresh air once he's found a little form - and the best bit is - I don't even think he's fully on form yet. He's been class, but I have a hunch that his touch and his finishing still isn't quite where he thinks it could be.

Class today.

Not sure, he was full of running and was a better outlet than Billy when he was taken off.

Strange but think that Wilder might have said the same to Howe about Brooks last year

All the players are monitored and taken off when the levels indicate they have “shot their load” shall we say.
Given how well he was playing I doubt it was a tactical switch.

As for Billy, I agree he might not be a player to be starting and leading the line. But coming in to close a game out and use his experience, he certainly should be in the squad.

Agree about Billy but Moose wasn't shot today, in fact I thought he was gaining?

Well I hope so, would make a huge difference to have him playing full games week after week!

I’ve seen it a handful of times now and I’m still not sure how he did it. It’s as though he realised he wasn’t going to be able to turn it home (based on his run relative to where the cross went) and almost subconsciously knew that Lundstram would be heading there. It was a brilliant piece of play. He’s got a bit of everything Mousset – that sort of positional awareness and selflessness not to simply try for goal for the first, the ability to put a through ball in as he did for Fleck, a Sharp-esque predator’s strike against Arsenal, an instinctive cleverness for the West Ham goal, and brilliant pace and finishing at Everton.

What I’m trying to say is that I’m quite fond of this Mousset character.

Of all the players either injured or off-form, i think we've missed Mousset the most.

Robinson has covered for JOC. He doesn't get forward as good, but the defensive side is fine.
Fleck has been poor. Osborn covers his role well.

With Mousset we've missed that spark upfront. We've seen flashes from Burke but Mousset genuinely scares defenders.

Had similar thoughts myself. Let’s hope Brewster can also be a bit of a wildcard for us, we need that someone who can be a bit more unpredictable.

Do we know when he’s likely to be back?
