Luke Ayling

If we were interested in Ayling I would have always fancied he'd join Boro because he's been there for three months on loan and has done well, he knows everyone and the manager, it's far more logical he'd join them over us.

Besides, we've got Bogle there who has been decent this season and is probably on another year's option. I'd rather Bogle than Ayling. We've also got Curtis coming through. I expect we will go after McNair as reported for the RCB option. At 29 he's still hit two/three years left in him.

9 assists in 33 games I think it is. Some of the best stats in the championship and a free.
Hardly a free. There’s no such thing. The reason players run their contracts down is so they & their agents pocket huge signing on fees. The money goes to them instead of the selling club, usually staged over the period of the contract similarly to transfer payments.

He may or may not be signing for a basic wage of £12k a week (very unlikely) but he will be making a huge amount from the deal.

A few people on this site (I’m not saying you do) get hung up on us “relying on frees” as if we are somehow penny pinching. That’s because they don’t realise the exorbitant costs usually involved in a free transfer.

Players who know they will be in demand are the ones that run their contracts down. That’s because they know they can absolutely fleece whichever club signs them.

But it’s all in my head 😂
It could just be a purple patch or playing for a contract.
He's 33 when the season starts next so I can live with this disappointment..
No bashing the board yet from me.

A page back I was convinced he was an interesting target.

Now we’ve started rounding on the geriatric let’s move on to better!

We already have better in Bogle. That's assuming he's staying on a one year option I'd assume.

if were going with wing backs again in the championship i think bogle and rnd if fit enough or osborn would be good enough at that level weve got more important positions to cover than wing backs

Thing is, paying £14k pw isn’t worth it if you’re keeping Bogle. Got to spend the funds wisely & use it in better places if the demands are too high.

Bogles been exposed defensively in the prem, he should be ok in the champ

Even at his age on like a 1 year contract with a wage reduction, wouldn’t mind this tbh. Has experience and is very good for the level, as long as he isn’t any of our marquee signings though.

So we should only be targeting players that played regularly for Leicester & Ipswich?
That isn't what I said. Not worth paying big bucks to a 33 year old who will be of no value at the end of the contract. Leeds, who failed to go up automatically, rightly decided that Ayling isn't good enough to be in a squad fighting for promotion. Boro, who you thought were certs to go up last year, have decided to sign a lower Championship standard right back on big wages.

Well it all depends on what we're planning, doesn't it? If we're operating on a theory of we have enough to go straight back up, will be bringing in one or two younger centre backs that are not quite ready for the demands of the English game or are still a bit off developing, and we just need someone to bridge the gap for a season, then it's fine. If we're saying it's going to take more than a season to rebuild, then you'd be right that it's a nonsense signing
