Long needs to go

I wasn't at the game today. But it has been clear for a while that he's not up to the standard we require. He had 2 good spells, as far as I recall. One was when Howard was injured shortly after Clough took over. He stepped up to the challenge and had a good few months. The other time was a brief spell in the middle of last season. The rest has been average. His confidence issues are neither here nor there. You can train a player to get over that.

You know what his problem is? He's about 0.25 seconds too slow. He reacts well, never gets sent the wrong way, but the quicker shots he lets in, his arms are never at full stretch. If he was a hair's breadth quicker he'd be a great keeper. As it stands he is merely good.

That's probably the best description of where Long is right now

So we won't get promoted because of Long?

Quite probably not.

We aren`t going to storm the league so promotion will need to be hard fought where every point counts.

Long will cost us a number of points as he has in seasons past. Stating a player is clearly not good enough for what we require of him isn`t malicious or victimisation,it`s genuinely believing that a crucial weak link needs strengthening.

Remember last Autumn when I said all this? I advised George to pack it in and become a florist?

I will now accept apologies from all who shot me down over it.

Liability.

I am not saying he's perfect, but you're squad can't be at this level. You don't pay first team money to a keeper and bring in another. Maybe Wilder's hands were tied, maybe they weren't but he what we have got, and probably will do for the rest of the season so lets back him.

I also don't see a viable alternative?

FFS Barney give it a rest , I can't cope with yet another season of hound the scapegoat ! We all know he has his faults but he is not as bad as the stick he gets on here ! Yes I have been today and he wasn't perfect but give it a rest ! On a side note , really impressed with Fleck , he is like a poor mans Jack Wilshire but hopefully not as injury prone As ever UTB

In a really good side, George Long might be good enough to be a promotion winning 'Keeper. But we're not a really good side, or certainly we weren't last year.

Shots from distance has been a problem for years. For some, sure the 'Keeper could have done better but we concede so many shots from outside the box that we're bound to concede more than our fair share of goals from outside the box. It's been that way for so long now that I'm stunned no manager has addressed it.

It still makes my blood boil thinking of that Crewe winner at the Lane a couple of years back, a short corner routine pinged to the edge of the area and cracked in (straight down the middle of the goal, mind you). Half the posters on here used the phrase 'one in a million strike' or 'can't legislate for that' etc as if the goal were divine providence or manifest destiny rather than something the fucking team could do something about. They didn't then and they still haven't now.

I think if Che goes to Brum there will be enough money for a keeper to replace Long. Someone early 30`s.
Not replacing Long is the not viable alternative. Unfortunately unlike outfield players most bad decisions/mistakes by keepers result in a goal.
We agree goals win games. They also lose them in Longs case. Nothing personal. Simply business.

But when did he last lose us a game? how many games apart from Gillingham did he lose us last season?

Who is the viable alternative. Everyone is good at describing this experienced keeper, without being able to name one.

He's not hugely experienced but I'm really surprised Wilder hasn't been in for Adam Smith from Northampton, would be a cracking signing.

So it seems that any goal we concede will be Longs fault. So does this mean evefy goal we score mean that the oppo goalie is also shit?

We conceded one. It was longs fault.

Im not doing all to is bollocks again. Leave George alone blah blah blah. He's terrible, we've messed up by not getting a keeper AGAIN. that's me done tonight, no choice but to get hammered. George fucking long.

Described by the Sky Sports pundit at the game as unstoppable and that Long had no chance. But he's been tried and found guilty by the "must've been Longs fault" brigade who haven't seen it.

Maybe Long would've saved the unstoppable if he was 30. Is that how it works?

Long has not been and never will be good enough to be anything more than a League Two level keeper.

If he stays here long enough he might even achieve that here.
