It was probably less about money and more about not leaving the Champions of Europe to join an all-time bad Premier League team. Not that we would've even tried to sign him then, considering that we threw in the towel before the season even began.

Just seems really odd, if he’s not going to get a top club in England, surely he’d go abroad or sign for United? His choices in his personal life will have cost him a few quid, but I can’t imagine he really needs the money.

At least he's not coming here, pace was his main attribute but he's absolutely finished physically and was woeful for Man City last season. I can understand the England reasons for staying in the Premier League, but unfortunately being at Burnley will likely end his England career anyway.
