My two peneth -

• Simple red and white stripes.
• A rich, darker red. Not a wishy washy pale red.
• Not thick stripes, not thin/pin stripes (2013 Macron/94/95)
• No black 'inset' stripes (1991 and last season).
• Preferably no black outline on the red stripes. Although not a dealbreaker.
• 3 visible equidistant red stripes - RED always central

Black shorts and white socks.

That right there is indeed a thing of beauty.

The only thing that wrecks the above kit is a poorly thought out sponsor - per the recent discussion on the memory Lan podcast with Roygbiv and The Pinch a shitty sponsor can ruin the initial look of a kit

We normally wore red socks with the first Umbro 80s kit, but Keith has white socks on here.
Hard to believe now but we wore this home shirt for four seasons.

For me we should always have Black shorts and WHITE socks. The reason for this is it’s gives us an identity, instantly recognisable.

For example we are part of what could be called the big five of red and white striped teams.

Southampton, rarely have the traditional red and white stripes these days, shirts could be anything and when it’s stripes you just know it’s them from the style. Their socks could be anything, red, black, white, hooped. Their kit could be anything from one season to the next. For me they are instantly recognisable.

Stoke, you see a game on tv without knowing the teams you still know it’s Stoke with their white shorts and socks which they have wore for the majority of their history. Instantly recognisable.

Sunderland, always red or black socks, only wore white socks once.

Brentford, again always red or black socks and only wore white once.

So we could be mistaken for Brentford or Sunderland at a glance on tv. But if we stuck to the white socks with our kit I think we would stand out and everyone would know it’s Sheffield United the moment they see the stripes, black shorts and WHITE Socks.

Spot on.

Always prefer us in white socks but as you say gives us a distinct look to other red and white teams.

I think a red central stripe makes it look better, regardless of the number of strikes and thickness.

I think black trim or pin stripes look better for us than just red and white stripes with no trim.

The Teletext shirt was pretty much perfect. But needed white socks!

White Socks catching up in the polls.

I think this is my biggest insistence. I prefer plain red and white stripes, but do appreciate pinstripes every so often.
What i really want on EVERY KIT is white socks.

I posted this a few years ago about wanting us to standardise on tri-colour kits.

I've been thinking recently that i'd like United to have an identity - yeah we have our red and white shirts, but so do many others. We often change the colour of our socks from Red to White to Black. The best kits for me are Black shorts and White socks, but we continue to mix it up.

There was the Morocco v France game in the World Cup where both teams wore tri-colour kits:


Man Utd 1st choice colours are Red, White and Black, it's their identity:


Hamburg too have their identity in tri-colour kits - White, Red and Blue (with the socks always featuring the...
