The facts show
1: A few year ago he was one of the best players in the Championship.
2: He was so good that Man City agreed to pay £42 million for him and offer him a 6 year contract on £150K a week.
3: He’s played 31 times for England and during Euro 22 was man of the match in a few games.
4: He’s still only 30…..so not exactly past it.

The downsides are he’s hardly ever played for Man City, only played in 16 premier league matches.
He’s been on loan at Premier league West Ham and Ipswich and been poor.

It’s a real fall from grace because now…..it’s possible he’s (at worse) average Championship standard.

It depends on the contract but signing anyone with such a background would be a sign of ambition However as mentioned he might now only be average championship standard……however he might also return to his previous form and become 1 of the best players in the Championship.

It’s a risk but most signings are risks. However I think if the signing fails….at his very worse Philips is still an average hardworking CC midfielder.
Your point no. 3 that he had a good Euro 2022 was the only thing that got him the massive money move to Man City.

He was decent for Leeds but wasn’t anything special.

You don't sign for that money for a title winning city if your not decent.
Nor play for England for 31 apps and get voted best player of England's 20-21 games.

There's a player there.

But... This all said no one has really seen it for a while. Glimpses. The odd full game but nothing consistent for a few years.

If we get him on favourable deal for us next season I'm good with that. I'm not so comfortable if it's a drain as that becomes a gamble of our resources.

wow ..........................£42 million for him and offer him a 6 year contract on £150K a week.

10% signing fee £4,200,000 , then £7,800,000 a year for 6 years, that's fucking unbelievable !
Fair play to the lad reading into his background he had it tough growing up and if City are that stupid to splash that type of cash about you can’t blame him. On a note of mindset of a footballer it would be interesting to know if he is bothered about only appearing 46 times for different clubs since 2022 (16 with City) and 31 with England or is his bank balance ticking over so nicely that it is distracting.

If it was me (stretching a bit) it must be difficult to motivate yourself to go to a club like Sheffield United on loan with the facilities we have got when he is already being paid at least £150k a week for showing his face at Man City training campus. Although he could potentially save his footballing career, he grew up in a rough area of Leeds with his dad in prison and mum working 2 jobs etc he has done well to get where he has got to and could easily retire at the end of his Man City contract. Haven’t got anything against the lad apart from jealously (jokes) but I don’t think that type of player is a Wilder style, not sure why he went after him. We will never benefit long term from a turn in fortune

Always thought he was overrated (albeit good by our standards) and the move to Man City - considering fees and wages - was one of the most bizarre transfers I can remember. He really did hit the jackpot

Hardly played or done anything of note since moving to City.

I’ve no idea what sort of wage contribution we’d be able to negotiate and given our financial position next season, anything over a 10% continuation would be a reckless gamble in my opinion.

Man City still have him under contract
He’s going to get paid whether he goes on loan or not.
Might as well loan him to somewhere he wants to go to see if he can rediscover some of the form that made them buy him
He won’t get that chance at Man City
The money from a loan fee is irrelevant to them. It’s a contribution, nothing less. Skin in the game from the club that loans him.
Maybe Man City get a player back - maybe they don’t.
Blades have a decent record of doing well for loans, particularly for Man City.
He is a risk on fitness so any loan fee will have that in mind.
The potential upside is high
If he fails and it fails quickly and cheaply then it’s no great loss.

I’d take him for a peppercorn wage contribution (£5k a week maximum), but with a big bonus payment to City should he make a number of appearances and we get promoted.

If City don’t accept that type of deal then they can look for some other sucker to take him on or pay him to show his face at the training ground.

I Know, I know, But I sit almost next to Kalvin every home game, He comes to all the games and he always makes time for any kid that wants a chat or a selfie. That does not seem the actions of a prima donna, big bollocks Man city player. He even sings the GCB song both halves. Seems an OK fella to me.

Not sure how he got the "Yorkshire Pirlo" nickname - not even half the player Pirlo was.
He did have some decent games for England and has shown flashes of being a top-level championship player for us. However like Tom Davies he doesn't seem to be able to string a run of games together.

He is one of many players that have been sold a dream and money by the likes of City. Even when he signed for them it was a tall order for him to get into that City team.

I am sure that move was more to do with City meeting their homegrown player quota than actually needing Phillips.

Don't you dare humanise him!

He's been here since January and barely played. So it would be an incredibly wild decision to bring him back again, unless we're literally paying peanuts for the privilege.

I can't help but think a "Technical" team in charge of squad management and future planning wouldn't vote for it...

I'd take him back on a free transfer if City were to let him go. Although he has another year or so left since City were daft enough to give him a 6 year deal.

Why do I get the feeling he won't feature at all in these last few games.

He shouldn't feature we need to be working out what our midfield combo is going to look like next season. With Jairo, Peck , Blaster and Rothwell all available Wilder needs to be deciding what formation he wants to play and who plays where. Thats why I wouldn't play Bindon either, or Ings.

Bindon's injured, rolled his ankle against Blackburn.

Even if Citeh made him a free agent, he'd have absurd wage demands considering what he's currently on with them.

Seems a pointless signing for no other reason than to show off that we were able to attract him. Been an abject failure all round.

That'd be an expensive gamble. I assume the talk is of another "cheap" loan where Citeh feel guilty for ending his career and we pay... a tenner a week?!

Still haven't activated Jairo yet, Peck might be gone too. A bit difficult to work with Blaster and Rothwell but should we get rid of Davies from goal too since he is potentially off. With the 2 matches left we have a blank slate really of putting out an experimental side. Ings, Mee, Jairo are all on option to extend deals. Bindon isn't ours, or Hoever or Soumare and Davies is due to go in the summer. You could play something like the below, with bringing on Ings for Cannon and Jairo for Rothwell and Bindon in for McGuinness around the hour mark. Ings and Jairo have to step up if they want a contract although unlikely Ings will get it but he does have that experienced head that Wilder keeps mentioning. We can play the next 2 like an extended pre-season in theory as, all these players have been involved although Faxon just on the bench but nobody can say we have made wholesale changes. If Peck goes and Blaster doesn't get fit, I expect some of the preseason friendlies will look similar but hopefully with One in there and Cooper back in goal. I know Wilder doesn't want to play McCallum but Burrows offers us nothing defensively.

Punter pleaser signing🙄

I'm maybe too emotional about these things but his moment of shit headedness cost us a historic moment in a season of
Epic abject nothingness
Do you mean the tackle where he wellied the ball upfield, caught the pig player who was lunging in to try to snap him in half, sending said pig to the floor rolling round like he'd been shot in the teeth by an A10 Warthog circling overhead. THAT moment of shit headedness???
