It's funny looking back at some of these melt comments in this thread. Onwards and upwards KP.

Everyone knows Phillips has it within him to raise the ceiling. It's whether or not he can withstand a gruelling Championship season that's yet to be determined. A good performance in the Carabao Cup does nothing to answer those doubters.

Different gravy this lad , if we can get him fit and he stays injury free , will be a delight to watch him , owt cud happen !!

It also helps if you're in the AA!

And before anybody says it I don't mean Alcoholic Anonymous.
Although being a Blade , Alcoholics Unanimous might be better. If ever you don't fancy a drink call them up and someone will talk you into having one.

Really good in and out of possession.
Like Tom Davies, his talent isn’t in question at this level. His fitness is. He looked a strong unit though and coming deep to collect the ball, moving the ball quicker was what we needed when Blackburn were on top

He was really impressive though and if we can get him involved in 50-75% of games we’ll do alright

I think it does, because some comments weren’t just about his ability to get / keep fit but in what he brings to the team.

Very similar to Tom Davies, people quickly forget what he can bring to the team. Phillips 30 min cameo was class whether that’s in the league or cup, it’s a good reminder of the player we’ve got

Don’t talk to me about the fucking AA , fucking useless , broke done in Manchester last week “we will recover you at 1220 “ 1420 still stood there waiting, useless, they are too big for there staff and service to handle . Also once put a rear wheel on my vehicle and didn’t tighten it up correctly it worked lose , get another vehicle recovery service is my advice!!!
Phillips tho is excellent player 😂

I dont think anyone doubts his quality but the best ability is availability and given hes played very few games the last 3 or 4 seasons that remains to be proven.

He was excellent last night

My reservations on the signing however remain..

none of those reservations were regarding his abilities as a footballer.

I don’t think his injury record is as bad as what we all think. He’s had an injury every year, like most players but prior to him signing for City he never really struggled with injuries.

Like you said, regaining fitness is the biggest challenge. Especially without a proper preseason, it’s good we’re still in all cups. That gives him a chance of more minutes to build from.

I guess he’s not played consistently at all and when he has it’s for short, often disastrous spells as he’s either not been fit to get up to pace with games or he’s got himself sent off…

So, there’s justifiable concerns over him as he won’t be on YTS wages either, but we have to judge based on what we see. And last night was good to see…

Let’s hope we see it regularly. Hell of a player if we can keep him playing

I believe being settled at a club like Dem, with only a short commute, will be really good for him. He oozed calmness and quality during his time on the pitch last night. Terrific to see.

Also thought Jairo was decent (as he normally is). He’s a calming and measured influence too. Great to see him back in a Blades shirt

We all know though, 'if' he has a poor ish game or he comes off with a slight injury lots of the negative gits on here will be all over it, saying I told you so, he's fuckin useless and they'll love saying it.

I can see Wilder being really good for him. As long as the off the field finance stuff doesn't scupper anything, I think he will enjoy feeling part of a team that's got a good bond with each other and the fans.

In reality, he wants for nothing in life with the contract he is on. playing in a team at the wrong end of the PL might not be the best motivator as he was with West Ham and Ipswich. Being a big fish in a small pond and enjoying playing football could really help him and therefore us.

Excited to see him play more. Well done Lad.

Looking at his stats last night he gave more passes in the 30min on the pitch than either Rothwell or Riedewald. In other words he gets on the ball more often. You could describe it as agressive in comparison to passive which Rothwell is mostly. Similar in approach to Ndyiae and MGW.

Looking at how we set up and how we play during games, reveals the following.
In 4231 Rothwell and Peck have little influence when up against Solis or any strong athletic midfielders. Vini Souza was our counterfoil to those type of playes. That is why Philips is need on the pitch to win, retain and pass the ball.

So far its our defense who are on the ball more and pass more than our midfielders. Which in turn means our forwards get less passes or give less passes.
In essence our worst passers of the ball are given more opportinies to pass.

This isn't just a SUFC problem. It is widespread in the Championship. For us though we see it with holding on to the ball and not doing anyyhing constructive with it. For that reason Gus was invaluable to us as he could create chances on transitions or cutting inside and taking a shot.

With our wide midfielders not being involved enough in the game to create chances.

Potential solutions.
Philips needs to play as much as possible . Baptiste plays before McGuinnesd as he is better on the ball.
Get a number 10 on loan. Wolves are playing a lot of ball through their 10, including when Tommy Doyle comes on in that spot for the last 30min or so.

Philips and a new number 10 would give us more control and create more chances.

I did not say they did, I said they will learn so much from Philips
no wasnt being funny just dont think they gel together in midfield in any case im expecting peck to be sold and think if that happens the souttar deal may be back on

Quality midfielders have their head on a swivel all the time. I watched him closely last night and every time he got the ball, head up looking around, scanning through options, like an NFL quarterback. Peck could learn a lot from him in just that alone.
