Rankine was furious with Danny Wilson for not starting Slew in 2011-12 and forced the club to accept Blackburn's offer. See details of his football career below when he could have had a better career with us

There's no guarantee he could have had a better career with us. He had plenty of opportunity to prove himself on loan at lower levels and couldn't.

Not guaranteed, but we've had a fair few players who've been great for us and never lived up to those levels elsewhere. There's been threads on it in the past (just as there's been threads on great players who've turned to dog shit when they arrived at ours)

Kyle Walker and Dominic Calvert-Lewin both left United to join Premier League clubs at a similar age to Slew and it didn’t do their careers any harm.

I personally think players generally find their level whatever the circumstances of their careers. I doubt Slew would be playing at a higher level right now had he stayed at United.

Sign him back.

Are we so arrogant that we can't allow people to make mistakes? Will we really cut our nose to spite our face?

If he would have been one we would have kept then why not revisit?

He's a 21 year old 6'4" centre back with some decent senior experience.

Perhaps we agree that he resigns, goes on loan next year and then the following seasons he's competing for the first team.

If he's not got the potential then so be it but I wouldn't rule anything out if it made sense.

Not gunna happen. He values his 'Freedom' too much to allow us to re-sign him. Never mind. I'm sure he will find another club who will also be blamed at sometime in the future when he next has a bust up with his club and wants out again. Plenty of other fishes in the sea for United to look at and I wouldn't want him stunting the growth of the young lads we already have here.

How many people on here would turn up for work if they were not paid last month, with no guarantee that you would be paid in the future. I doubt he is on mega money at Southend and will have bills to pay like the rest of us. As for leaving us to play rather than play for our under 23s or sit on the bench, many would argue that it is good that he wanted to play football It's not like we discovered him and he'd been at the club since birth

When he was younger and with less experience, he thought he was too good to develop in the under 23s and potentially on loan if he signed a new contract.

What damascene conversion do you think he's had to change his view on his career? We paid his wages and had a plan for his development, he thought he knew better.

He's 21. Plenty of us made bad decisions at that age and learnt from them.

Leaving a club with a rich history of bringing threw academy players and producing some of the best defenders in the country to play national league was stupid as fuck. His agent will have a lot to answer for if he's the one who's put these delusions of grandeur in his head.

Rankine’s biggest crime against SUFC was the 45 minutes he played in the 2003 playoff final before Warnock roped him off at half time for McCall.
On the journey down I kept saying to my pal "I hope he plays McCall".

Or it could be conceived as good advice his career very likely panned out how it should have but with a very nice signing on fee and wage with his first move..

I think slew to Blackburn could well be one of the those deals that was great for both us and him.

He didn't get paid. He has every right to leave. He doesn't owe anyone anything here either

All absolutely true. United don't owe this kid anything either. Better to let sleeping dogs lie and let the club and the player move on and go their separate ways. No need to offer him a deal to bring him back as others on here have suggested (imo). If he's good enough he will forge a career in the game away from Bramall Lane.

Definitely

Shame whenever this sort of thing happens at any club (well, not quite any), but we've moved on, there's plenty of clubs around there at step 1 and league 2 level, wouldn't be surprised if someone like a Colchester offered him a deal until the end of the season then re-evaluate

Did you see his social media antics to try and leave united?

Just found it a bit odd of a comment to make in a direct reply to him saying, for all intents and purposes, "I'm not being paid, bye", bringing up stuff he may have done in the past, which I've not seen, appears irrelevant to the point at hand

How do you know its irrelevant if you haven't seen them?
