Rumour doing the rounds is this will is the player Clough is trying to bring in on loan.

Cloughy's been a big fan of Eustace for many years and finally signed him in the summer. Captain material as well as being a great mentor for the younger players. Would be another shrewd signing imo if it happens.

I proposed this soon after Clough came ,would be a brilliant signing ,the captain we have wanted.

Eustace used to be a good solid midfielder, but I haven't seen him in a while.

What if McGinn plays as well as he did against Fulham though? Are we looking to resign Coady, and Eustace, and a new striker?

Solid yet unspectacular when I've seen him and that's probably what we need.

Would be a decent signing for me, leadership qualities and a decent physical presence in the middle. Could only improve us.

Are we looking to resign Coady...?

Good question. I wouldn't spend a fee on him or take another loan, but perhaps a free transfer with a sell-on would be worth a gamble?

I guess it also depends how much we intend to spend in summer, as Coady is nothing more than a future prospect at the moment.

I think his contract at Liverpool is up in the summer.

Aha. Surely they won't offer him an extension based on his efforts for us this season.

I wouldn't exactly be ecstatic if we offered to take him off their hands. He's soft for a big bloke and his passing isn't great. These aren't things that will come with experience either. He's been at a football academy for years and years. His passing and strength should be better.

Edit: in fact, it isn't just strength, it's a lack of balance. The reason McDonald was so hard to knock off the ball wasn't simply strength, it was the fact his balance was so good. Coady doesn't have this, and it isn't something that can really be taught.

Don't worry, we will just ensure Doyle gets another extension.

Regardless of whether he is, it's a great indication of Doyle's worth that his praise invariably happens in situations such as:
"Doyle was surprisingly good today",
"Doyle is not our worst player at the moment",
"Doyle is currently better than [insert off form player's name]"
"Doyle didn't make many mistakes today."

It's never:
"Doyle continues to be among our best performers."
"Doyle was man of the match again"
"Doyle has to be the first name on the teamsheet"
And so on.

This has been the same for years and years.

do you not go when he and Macdonald were the midfield behind the one of the highest scoring teams in Europe 2 years ago ,or doesn't that count ?

Highest scoring teams in Europe is a massive misnomer. We were League 1 after all.

But fair enough, he wasn't nearly as bad then. But going on the last season and a half he's not been nearly good enough.

How long does being part of a well performing team (individually he was far from amazing) keep you in the team for regardless of poor performances?

How many of these goals can we directly attribute to Evans, Quinn & Williamson? He was the weakest outfield player we had then & has only looked better as the team has got worse. Houso is spot on in his post.

McDonald was awful and disinterested for most of last season yet Doyle was still to blame for the team's position even though he didn't disappear from trace like KMac did when the going got tough. He has played well in midfield this season yet it doesn't count as it is a poor team !!!

Eustace (if the same player as I remember him) would be an upgrade on Doyle as a player but I've not seen him for a couple of years.

So we just wipe that from the record books then ,and the first 3/4 s of last season because Doyle was part of the midfield ?

only in the majority of those who like someone to blame players irrespective of how they perform ?

I hate to add to the negativity, but Doyle is not a good use of the wages we pay him. Hes one of the highest paid at the Club (if not the highest ) and for his wages we could get 2 "consistent" league 1 players at least. He is NOT consistent.

He has had one or two good games eg Villa but he is usually one of the weak links in our team.

The fact that he is a defensive midfield player and has hardly been booked in the last 18 months says a lot. He never actually catches up with play often enough to commit a foul. He is, in short, ineffective and has little impact on a game. You would expect a player of his experience to "boss" a game. This NEVER happens. We could do so much better and a strong, pacey player in that position would transform our midfield from one of the worst in the division.

UTB & FTP

Ha he gets lynched for being sent off and hammered for not collecting bookings.
Still at least hes not Harris ,getting pelters for bookings he might get in the future :)

He gets lynched for pursuing a personal battle at the expense of the team's result. Oh, and never mind that he's the friggin captain, and the last person who should do it.

And in response to your earlier point, it's possible to analyse a player's performance irrespective of what the team does. He was poor in our first season at this level, he was awful the majority of last season and he's been typically shocking the majority of this.

That he's the captain and the team rarely shows any heart for a battle says absolutely everything.

Whatever your feelings about Doyle, people are going to have to admit that feelings about him split the club. At most it seems that most fans just tolerate him because we don't have any better and at worse he is devils sperm. Unfortunately, this is never going to change and the sooner we move on from him the better, for the club.

I have never known a captain be disliked by the majority of the fans.
