John Egan

I wouldn’t be too bothered if we had to let Egan go although we don’t have the funds to replace with better.

Defensively he has good qualities but he was always frustrating with the ball. His first thought would always be launch it clear or out of play. One of the worst offenders for turning over possession.
Glad someone else saw this. It was painful watching us under Hecky when Egan was charged with being the deep lying playmaker; he has his strengths but being in possession and passing certainly aren't high on the list.

I'm sure there was a debate on here between those who were of the view that he was good with the ball at his feet (he's not) and those who were of the opposite view.

You said put a contract on the table while he proves his fitness. What if he signs it and doesn’t regain fitness?
Obviously it's conditional on him proving his fitness, but it's only fair for him to know what the offer is. Two parties have to sign a contract.

It is when most will have retired/dropped to the lower leagues by 33/34. More so when you’ve not played in 10 months and more so when you weren’t blessed with pace to begin with.

You don’t need a player of any particular age. You do need them with particular skills and to be available to play. Other players are available with leadership and experience, who are yet to prove their fitness after a long time out.

The club know all of this, which is why we’ve done what we have.
What have the club done? I'm not aware if what the latest on Egan is.

I might be wrong as memory is shocking but that was also the view of all the brentford fans when he left, defensively decent but awful with the ball. I’ve not seen anything to change my mind on that.

I will put on record though that when he’s fit i do think he has value defensively. Lots of room for improvement though in that department.

Depends what the bar is with this i.e Trusty makes Egan look like Ruben Dias

Wilder will 100% want to keep Egan - he's the captain, a very good pro, and until his injury had a very good fitness record. As mentioned above, the club are being sensible in terms of the contract being conditional upon him proving his fitness. Hopefully he can do so, and get the extension. He's a very good Championship centre half.

yes i agree and even if we keep egan we still need 2 more centre backs to come in suppose it could depend on the salary were offering him

With respect after all the years he's been in the game I really can't see him improving

RND is 24 Egan is 31 probably a good reason.
A completely left wing (ironically) but could we have offered RND a deal because if fit we know he’s potentially valuable to the Saudi leagues?
A bit of the stretch I know but out of all possibility?

How can he prove his fitness when there are no competitive matches before his contract expires ?
Are we thinking he'll play through August on a pay as you play basis so we can see how he reacts to the rigours of a Championship match ?
Our medical dept is not very good at assessing previously injured players so I hope we don't take an early gamble on their opinion.
We've already gambled on RND.
I doubt other clubs will come in for Egan when he's not played for so long and can't be anywhere near match-fit.

Don’t see why Egan can’t play for United for the next 3 years.

He never had any real pace in the first place. But he reads the game well and is positionally decent. He plays his role well.

He’ll be good enough for the Championship, we would probably get relegated with him again, then with the eight players around him, he’d still be of use to the squad after that.

Hope he is fit. He seems a good character to have in the dressing room and a solid leader.

Having him and Worrall creates a good bit of potential succession planning too.

Not sure we’ll see so much overlapping this season.

I think we’ll have three extremely hard to beat Championship defenders in Worrall, Egan and Robbo and give more licence to Bogle and RND to bomb on.

Also think a Worrall and Egan partnership works in a 2 if we are heading that way

Egan is better than Worrall.

Egan is better than Worrall.
I would say Worrall is much better on the ball than Egan which gives him the edge in the Premier League.

In the championship both very good defenders.

would love us to go to a back 4 in the championship but doubt it will happen and egan and worrall would be a good centre back pairing and would get us another body in midfield still like the 4312 formation

Yep.
With Worrall and Burrows, that gives us a decent back 4
