He's good but he's not 'splashhalfyourbudget' good

Club can’t win.

People whinge when we don’t spend any money and whinge when we do.

And if we had put in a £2m bid, it’s rejected and the player goes to Leeds for £4m then the exact same people would be whinging that we didn’t match what another club was paying, before slagging the club off for not wanting to be competitive/“can’t compete” etc etc

And how do you know it’s ‘half of our budget’?

I'm going to Tramlines this weekend so if he doesn't sign today you'll all have to be patient

Erm...if you were any good then these view forms would be ready collated and all you’d have to do is press send. Jeeze. Lack of commitment or what!? It’s all gone to pot. McCabe Vs the prince, then Brooks and now this!? I can’t take this club any more.

We need a 'shoes off' protest in the club car park
"Weekend off for Roygbiv? - Sack The Board"

Woah, who's winging?
I'm saying he's a cracking signing (check the other thread) but similarly I don't want us to pay £4mil upfront for a defender when we have very pressing matters up top if we can't afford to finance those. If we're signing Egan and also paying top dollar for some attackers it's good business.

I never said it was half our budget, where have you seen that?

I'd go into a partnership with someone to half the work load but we'd probably end up in court in a few years
I take it partnership will be for content only and you will set the site up under a different company and charge both yourself and the partner rent for it?

Brentford fans aren't exactly overawed at his departure. Hope it's not a dud signing. Enough weakness at the back already.

Saw that one fan said he was an upgrade on Jack O'Connell but still not great.

An upgrade on O'Connell, you say?

The Waghorn move is a feint to unsettle the greedy leech advising Hogan.

An exchange with a reasonable Bee on 365 I had...

Me - We had him on loan as a youngster but he barely played. If he's half the player of Jack O'Connell I'll be delighted.

Him - He's about a third of the player O'Connell is

Me - I don't believe you

Him - Easy gents, I'm more bigging up O'Connell than slating Egan. I always rated Jack, was gutted when he fucked off

(Tom Hardy to play me in the movie)

To be fair, I was making a generalisation and quoted part of your post to highlight that.

It came across as “now we are spending a little bit of money it’s too much” but on the flip side, and forgive me if I am wrong here, I have recently seen a post (or several in the same thread!) by you advocating an increase in spending (wages etc) and waning is to spend similar sums to get Scott Hogan.

In relation to the point about the transfer fee. We don’t know if it’s upfront or not. Chances are it won’t be. Football works on finance type deals and I would suspect that it’ll be a payment plan for this with a little bit up front, some spread over months and add ons that brings the total up to £4m.

In reference to the ‘half our budget’ bit, that was the specific quote I took from your original comment. (Quoted in my initial post)

My only point is that I wouldn't want us to spend half our budget on a centre half when we're desperate for goals. I haven't said it IS half our budget at any point.

I like Egan, he's a good player and he'll suit our system. I don't think we're spending £4mil upfront on him by any stretch.

I think they get above market value, which is even more worthy of respect. They don't sell until the ridiculous offers are made by desperate big spenders or premier league clubs. They maintain a low wage bill and secure their players on long, advantageous contracts. See Hogan, and the current valuation of Mepham and Watkins, who haven't even done that much at this level yet. A very well run club. If United could become a bigger Brentford or Peterborough, I'd be delighted. Promotion would be an inevitability.

We are already a bigger version of Peterborough. We sell our young talent and don't get promoted to where we want to be.

Just need to start getting bigger fees then we'll have the 'bigger Peterborough' thing absolutely nailed.

I think they're a small club at their level, so even with their astute business sense they can't force their way up.Same with Brentford at Championship level. United are a big club at our level. That's were the comparisons end for me.Sell a player for a huge fee, renvest in two or three simalrly talented players. Rinse and repeat until you have a promotion squad. It's difficult but not impossible.I'd want us to do this even if we had a top eight budget.

Quote below says differently. You left it open to that interpretation.

If you were not implying it, why allude to ‘splashing half of the budget’?

Your words not mine.
He isn't 'splashhalfyourbudget' good, especially when we need to sign 2 strikers... not sure where I've said we're splashing half our budget on him?

The argument of whether Stearman is a better player than Wright (which he is) is completely separate to the one of which place will Egan compete for mainly to be in the team. It may be that it’s Basham that drops out, but I think it’s more likely that Stearman will be the one whose role will slightly change – competing with Egan for the middle, and probably competing with Basham due to Stearman’s ability on the ball. It won’t be popular amongst you Picky Dickies, but I for one rate Stearman highly enough to think he could play in either the middle or right of the centre-backs. It’s a shame that others such as yourself rate Stearman so poorly that you don’t think he’d be able to beat Basham for the right-sided role. I despair, I really do.
I couldn’t agree more. Stearman is a good defender and had a good season for us, despite being injured for a spell. Now don’t get me wrong, I do like Basham but he’s not the player that people are making him out to be. Yes he can break beyond the RWB but his end product is poor. I lost count of how many times last season he got into a decent crossing position and completely fluffed it. He’s not the greatest positionally either, but not many people see this.

The signing of Egan is to bolster our defence and our weakest defender in my opinion is Basham. Yes, he is passionate and will run through brick walls but he’s very limited. Wilder has done very well here, providing we confirm Egan as ours.
