I'd be interested to know the actual up front fee - I strongly suspect it will be much much lower than the £4m figure being banded about.

I don't believe the near £4m figure. It's too much.

I don't think it'll be anything over £3m.

I've maintained £2.5m as the maximum for him all along and hopefully that will be the case.

£1.5m up front would be an excellent deal.

Wow! Egan better than JOC ? Can't wait now :D

Shows what a Muppet that :fattwat: is

They never rated O'Connell it seems but then to come out and say Egan is average when he has being a mainstay in their team (and captain) ever since he arrived makes you realise that this fan is talking rubbish, similar to some Cov fans over Fleck.

Brentford also kept 15 clean sheets last season..

I think they get above market value, which is even more worthy of respect. They don't sell until the ridiculous offers are made by desperate big spenders or premier league clubs. They maintain a low wage bill and secure their players on long, advantageous contracts. See Hogan, and the current valuation of Mepham and Watkins, who haven't even done that much at this level yet. A very well run club. If United could become a bigger Brentford or Peterborough, I'd be delighted. Promotion would be an inevitability.
We paid above market value for JOC?

Seems Wilder is trying to build a Damm, let's hope it works!

Looking at our budget/targets for this window quoted in the court stuff, this signing will be £1.5 million upfront..the rest ( whatever that is) to follow...

Seeing the arguments from the Brentford fans saying good money for a player in the last season of the contract.

Why didn’t they do what we do and offer him a new deal in Jan and get the better players tied down to deals. Get even more money for him then. Poor business from them I believe.

He has two years left, he’s contracted until 2020.

So who is going to be the in the back 3 come the first game?

Leonard/Basham - Egan/Stearman/Wright - JOC

My starting 11 (unlikely btw as more players will surely come in)

Hendo

Basham Egan JOC

Freeman Baldock

Coutts Fleck

Duffy

Mcgoldrick Clarke

Stearman in centre and Egan RCH.

Stevens on left. Coutts not playing till October so Evans for him.

Rest about right !

He won't be sold for that.

Yeah it's wishful thinking with Coutts but hopefully he will get some game time before October

Yep. Worth making this absolutely clear.

“He is now under contract at Griffin Park until the summer of 2020.”

Having suffered an almost identical injury to Coutts (inc. letting the bone heal naturally rather than with rod/pins), I'd be very surprised if he's back to anywhere near full fitness and form much before Xmas. Obviously he'll have far better medical and performance management staff to assist than I had but even when the bone has completely healed, it still takes a long long time to regain running technique, muscle mass, stamina, strength and perhaps most importantly, getting over the psychological issues about going in for tackles etc.

I would like to see him given a chance in there for when Stevens has a wobble. Either that or get another LWB. Possibly even Baldock and Freeman switching RWB and LWB several times throughout a game. Just keeps opposition teams on their toes.

Either way we should be looking at 2 for each position and LWB is solely Stevens at the minute.
LWB is not solely Stevens. You may not think much of Lafferty, but he's still here and in my view (and I believe CW's) he is a useful member of the squad.
I do think it's worth trying Freeman at LWB. He's played there before. Would be good to see if it works with both Baldock and Freeman together because they are both very good players.

Agree - just hope people are understanding when he comes back. Imo it will take a while until he’s at the same level as last time. It took him a good year or so imo to overcome his previous injury issues.

Luckily he is a classy midfielder and not blood and thunder tackler so hopefully once he regains his stride he’ll be able to show this.

I don’t think Lafferty did his case any harm whatsoever with his assist for Clarke the other night. I thought both wingbacks were really poor at times in positions where they could cut the ball back into the edge of the box – the way we play I think this is one of the most important aspects of our play that we could improve on.

I presume that Egan would contact JOC and ask about all things United, training, boss, fans, ground etc etc and JOC seems very happy here so if he doesn't come, it's JOC's fault

I hope it's reported as £4m even though it obviously won't be simply because of the reactions of some Wednesday fans that I've seen this morning.

"Where you got that money from? "

"I'd be furious if we spent that on a defender"

" You'll end up going bust. We are having to keep our finances in order"

"He's rubbish and you've spent all your money on him"

"I've read the court documents and you've only got £2m to spend so I think you'll sell somebody now"

Utter panic over the signing of John fucking Egan.

I realise everything. I’m surprised you needed to ask. I spotted Jake’s limitations at Championship level early doors. It’s what I do.

Stears a far better player. Tufty thinks so too. You do realise Jakie doesn’t figure in his plans don’t you? You Shakeys really will have to abandon your wishful thinking and face facts some time soon or life will become a series of disappointments.
I know stearman is better than wright, I never even hinted at the opposite. But Egan is better than stearman too, I know it must hurt to hear that.

Brentford have accepted a £4m offer from Sheffield United for centre-back John Egan, Sky Sports News understands.

The 25-year-old will return to Bramall Lane after being loaned to the Yorkshire club in 2012 when he was at Sunderland.

He played just one game and returned to the Stadium of Light where he failed to break into the first team.

Egan made 81 appearances for Gillingham from 2014-2016 before moving to Brentford.

He played 63 times for the Bees and was made club captain at the start of last season.

Egan has also won two caps with the Republic of Ireland.

Sheffield United have a pre-season friendly with Inter Milan to look forward to on July 24 before kicking off their Championship campaign against Swansea on August 4 live on Sky Sports.

The argument of whether Stearman is a better player than Wright (which he is) is completely separate to the one of which place will Egan compete for mainly to be in the team. It may be that it’s Basham that drops out, but I think it’s more likely that Stearman will be the one whose role will slightly change – competing with Egan for the middle, and probably competing with Basham due to Stearman’s ability on the ball. It won’t be popular amongst you Picky Dickies, but I for one rate Stearman highly enough to think he could play in either the middle or right of the centre-backs. It’s a shame that others such as yourself rate Stearman so poorly that you don’t think he’d be able to beat Basham for the right-sided role. I despair, I really do.

£4m, plus a salary package over 3 or 4 years (guess)? Of a further £3m or so is a lot.

I hope he is getting the right fella, and not just spunkin it !!

I'm a stearman fan so thought I would check, while clearly results have been better without him in the side from these stats, I would say defensively we were very similar with or without him we just weren't scoring goals

With stearman played 28, won 8, drew 8, lost 12, scored 27, conceded 32

Without stearman played 18, won 12, drew 1, lost 5, scored 35, conceded 23
I wouldn’t hold the fact the Stearman played most of his games without the Roller in the side against him. Necessarily !!
