At the time of the sale of DCL, if I remember rightly it seemed a fairish price for a kid from a league 1 Academy who had not really played any higher than League 2 (where he did ok and no more at Northampton) amd wasn't being picked. At the time we'd been in league 1 for several years. If Everton say sold him to City for £50 million, I suspect we'd get somewhere close to £8-10 million overall, which is a good bit of business for a then league 1 club.
You could argue that his development has been unique as it's highly unusual to keep playing a young player who was well short of being good enough for the top flight.
