The day of the Queen's funeral will now be a Bank Holiday. I wonder if any more games will be cancelled?

Just remember people, as football supporters we must all sit in darkened rooms with glum faces eating bread and water for the whole weekend to show respect to the late monarch, while non football folk can carry on with life as normal.

A greasy chip butty and a smile is ok too. 😀

‘Kin ell - measured debate - Betty Tiara (just for you) should peg it more often😳
You’re correct about the jelly n’all - I was going to put lime but was fearful I may be labelled as some form of deviant nut-job freak🤔

Absolutely no danger of you being labelled as some sort of deviant nut-job freak!

Out of all the stories being talked about the Queen this one is the best and probably sums up the Queens view on football.

After a Royal Variety performance the stars were lined up to shake hands with the Queen. They were all told to speak only when the Queen spoke to them. Tommy Cooper ignored this and said to the Queen "can I ask you a personal question" the Queen replied "You can but I may not be able to answer. Tommy says "Do you like football?" the Queen replied "Not really" , Tommy quips "can I have your tickets for the FA cup final"

It's one game and it avoids football getting loads of bad publicity for anything kicking off, people celebrating during the mourning period or even someone like James McClean making a political statement

100% agree with that being the reason they cancelled but surely whenever football is played again we're going to have the same issues?

The people in that meeting are close to a knighthood and are sniffing an honours list.

Fixed it for you.

Every single justification that has been made is undermined by the fact that no other industry or sport has responded the same way.

I'd begrudgingly understand if it was mandated by government, or if it was a gesture of solidarity across all sports.

I don't care about missing a game of football. I care that thousands of people have got up for work and school, then had their leisure robbed from them. Leisure that has been planned and costs money. We've been mandated a definition of respect which doesn't align with reality or public mood, with no opportunity for alternatives. A lot of people wanted to actually pay respects via the minute's silence, national anthem etc. It's not even a royalist vs anarchist issue.

Even all that said, I could maybe still understand all professional/semi-professional sport having a weekend off, but to cancel grassroots is so blind it's hard to fathom. It achieves absolutely nothing.

Access to football, especially grassroots, was denied or restricted for over a year very recently. It's a sore point that's still fresh, for most people. The Queen's existence plays no part in the operational functions of sport at any level, so for her death to have this effect is surreal.

The only way to avoid it would be to not Make the minutes silence mandatory. That way Liverpool, cos that’s the one thats gonna be the issue, can not have it.

Don't agree with it but I see why they took the decision they did. They'd much rather deal with pissed off fans then bad publicity or a government looking to score culture war points

No I agree with you completely. Liverpool and Celtic fans booing the anthem would be disastrous for the governing body. I just wonder how they are going to tackle it when the games resume

Chelsea Liverpool is the last game before the funeral 🤪👀😂

Thats the part that tells me the FA expected all sports bodies to cancel their events and so made the announcement early, they have been left looking very very foolish When all the rest opted to continue.

Yeah they'll definitely regret that decision now

The irony is that she came from that “Keep calm & carry on” generation so she may well have felt that things should carry on regardless. Never know for sure but she never struck me as someone who would have relished all the fuss.

She would 100 % never want the horse racing cancelled for anything.

Genuine question - how do you feel about the cricket going ahead today?
I personally think that football got it wrong. Cricket rugby and golf for example all going ahead and no one seems to be complaining about it. I get that there was probably more chance of disrespect at football games that would have portrayed the game poorly but I think they were just too risk averse

Agree. I also think it's great the cricketers are playing today because under these conditions we look like skittling SA before lunch.

Maybe if Saffers had ended the day 450-1 I might have thought differently 🤣

This is what I currently think.

At first, I was annoyed that the cricket is going ahead, as are other things...but not the football.

When I saw that the official line was...

"Home Nations cancel football following the Queen's death"

It occurred to me that, perhaps, having Rangers and Celtic playing in matches a day or two after the Queen dies, might be a bit of a touchpaper situation.

But surely, like Roy says, as soon as matches are back they'll start singing about it anyway?

I'm not a royalist personally but I'd have thought that having stadiums up and down the country singing the anthem would have rang out much louder than an obvious, expected few dissidents?

But I think the main reason boils down to the booze. My facebook feed alone has been worse than the days following Brexit, people are at each other's throats over their opinions. I've seen someone describe Britain as a welcoming country on this thread...we don't even welcome differing opinions from fellow Brits!

Imagine that coupled with thousands of football fans getting drunk and either winning or losing a match...emotional minefield...especially with all the tension following Lizzie's passing.

I'm gutted the match isn't on, I'm worried how the fixture congestion will play out and I'm really worried for a few clubs that could really do without losing the income.

However, still probably the right decision, all things considered
