It’s one game - I’m sure we fans can cope. Much as we all have our opinions (mine is that the games should go ahead), there’s also the possibility that some players and managers might also want to pay their respects and mourn. It’s fair to respect everyone’s individual preference and, as I say, it’s only one game.

Even my kids, who wouldn't have recognised the Queen if she rocked up round ours for tea, have had their most enjoyable weekly activity removed from them. the Queen was a remarkable lady who was respected and loved all over the world. It is right that her passing should be suitably marked and that those who want to mourn should be able to do. There are plenty of opportunities for people to do this and to pay their respects. She was 96 years old and it is right that she has a state funeral and service. In my view the service should be a thanks giving for her life and achievements.

Having said that I think that everyone can achieve what they want to do without the whole country being apparently shut down for 10 days or whatever. Why is it necessary to cancel all these sporting and other events? What real purpose does it serve? The Queen herself was keen on horse racing and her family support many sports. I am sure Her Majesty would have said please let my subjects continue with their normal lives as best they can and I don’t want life to stop. Let the sporting events carry on. At those events there could be a minutes silence to mark her passing. Apparently there was a dinner for 600 people at the Institute of Sport in Sheffield tonight cancelled and probably many other events all over the country. With the crisises we currently face this complete shut down is all we need.

PS I am not a republican and I am a great supporter of the Queen.

It's a fair point but on a personal level I'd rather pay my respect with a well observed minutes silence before the game. Its not for me but if people feel the need to sing the national anthem then so be it. Better that than sat at home watching the funeral at home if indeed people do that. As others have said, why is nothing else shutting up shop. Its all rather random.

I kind of understand them postponing the football, it is a sign of respect.

What sticks in my craw is why is it not a blanket postponement, I mean the England national team is playing cricket and that's going ahead, even though it's as good as a dead rubber anyway. Should be all or none.

Good point about applause. I seem to be defending the decision but, as I’ve posted, on reflection, it could have been a joyous and moving tribute to HRH to celebrate in large numbers at grounds. But hey, it’s a momentous event and it’s only one game….

Personally I think that the EPL and EFL missed a trick. Although government advice was to cancel, the decision was left to the football authorities. It should not be beyond them to specify games going ahead with silences, applause, anthems and black armbands?
This way, games go ahead with due observance of respect for HM Queen. No one loses out this way and EFL and EPL look like sensible decision making bodies.

The only possible downside is the possible requirement for a few extra coppers to police any ructions! The decision would deflect any criticism back to government agencies (SPG).
