After a couple of good wins and two clean sheets, where we suddenly looked more solid at the back and restricted the opposition to few chances.... we went and undid it all with another woeful display away from home.
We got what we deserved at Blackburn and I'm surprised the stats (XG) don't show this.
I think, by this stage, we can all see what our problems are...
- Wing-backs that can't / won't defend in Bogle & Lowe and no longer contributing in the final third.
- Vulnerable through the middle when Anel is missing.
- A totally disjointed midfield, badly exposing Norwood as the lone-man in the middle.
- No attacking game-plan, outside of relying on individual skill / set pieces.
I've said elsewhere, but I'll repeat it... there is seemingly no combination of three midfielders that fit into our system and are capable of dominating football matches.
We have tried:
Berge - Norwood - Fleck
This one lacks creativity and mobility.
Doyle - Norwood - McAtee
Zero tactical discipline. We get completely overrun.
I could go on, but the picture is clear. Something needs to change and it can't be a case of simply switching around the personnel.
We messed up our recruitment when we brought in Tommy Doyle. I know a lot of our fans like him, but he hasn't solved any of our midfield conundrums.
When we should have had the chance to put it right we were under embargo.
Bournemouth held off a strong challenge from Nottingham Forest by making a handful of signings in January. We stood still and now have our own challenger in the form of Middlesbrough. To keep them at bay, we need to be so much better than we have been this calendar year (midtable form).
Too many of our players look complacent and are lacking heart for the battle: Bogle, Lowe, Berge, Fleck, even Ndiaye (recently) seems to drop his head when things go against us.
Compare this to 2019 when we had Henderson, Baldock, O'Connell, McGoldrick, Sharp etc. you always felt that - as an absolute minimum, we were never going to be outworked.
Sadly, although this team possesses more technical ability, it doesn't seem to have the same mentality. I've watched us fold in recent weeks.
Personally
Revised guesses below:
A Ahmedhodzic - 11th March 2023 - 2 game suspension (League only)
E Stevens - mid-March 2023 -2023 (8 weeks) - unknown muscular injury
R Norrington-Davies - April 2023 (6 months) - hamstring surgery
R Brewster - April 2023 (6 months) - hamstring surgery
Guess at the team for the visit to Reading:
..............................Foderingham
..............Basham......Egan.....Robinson
.........Baldock......................................Lowe
.........Berge.........Norwood..........Fleck
...................McBurnie.........Ndiaye
Subs: Davies, Bogle, Clark, Osborn, Doyle, McAtee, Sharp.
It isn't the team I would play, as above - I think something urgent needs to be done in terms of the midfield 3.
For now, I'd probably sacrifice Ndiaye (out of form), for another body in the middle of the park and try to wrestle back some semblance of control.
It would leave some really strong options to change things late on: Bogle, McAtee, Doyle, Ndiaye, Jebbison (who should definitely be in front of Sharp on the bench if it's one or the other).
