Evening all,

Good news:

As expected, we saw the returns of Ahmedhodzic, Berge & McBurnie to first team action following the World Cup break, whilst Bogle & Lowe featured on the bench.

We had a behind closed doors friendly with Leicester this week & Doyle, Robinson & Jebbison played 60 mins, Berge 70 mins, whilst Bogle, Lowe & Basham all completed the full 90 mins. This gives a good indication of who is where in their returns to fitness.

Bad news:

The disappointing news was that Doyle's injury (which we were told was short-term some six weeks ago) kept him out against Huddersfield & there are rumours that Fleck could be out long-term. PH said that they are going for second opinions on this at the moment. It could be a disappointing end to his Blades career and it is another return to fitness that you have to question if we got badly wrong.

In my opinion, it is absolutely vita that we bring in a midfielder to play next to Norwood in January. Doyle has missed half our games, Fleck looks a worry and this only leaves Osborn (who isn't going to be good enough over the course of 20+ games) before you start playing musical chairs.

Lookahead:

Onto Wigan, I think it's likely we will play the same team as against Huddersfield with only Lowe maybe coming in for Stevens. I expect the other high profile returnees (Berge, McBurnie, Doyle) to feature from the bench...
It was great to see a proper bench against Huddersfield, full of experienced players with some game-changing options (Berge/Khadra/McBurnie).
If we can keep this lot fit, add 2/3 in January then - with the lead we have - you'd have to say our chances look extremely promising.

I think he might start Berge for McAtee. McAtee really isn't a natural fit and involves him playing on the wrong side. Otherwise, probably the same.

McAtee had an excellent first half against Huddersfield after having an excellent second half against Cardiff. He's growing in confidence and starting to show more ambition with his play.
Whilst he's playing this well it gives us the luxury of re-introducing Berge more slowly.

You might be right and it's hard to predict what PH is thinking, but if it was me - I'd give Berge 30 mins and, if he does well, then start him on Boxing Day.
He was actually pretty poor when he came on against Hudds too... looked tired and was unusually sloppy with the ball.

I do worry about the defensive side of McAtee's game. He's improving with every game though.

I think Berge was terrible at the weekend but has played another 60 minutes in midweek so hopefully almost ready. I think he might choose him for his height with McBurnie unlikely to start.

Overall quite encouraging. Injured players coming back in good numbers. Hecky won’t be risking McBurnie at Wigan by the sound of it. Brewster and RND not mentioned. Fleck taking time to recover

Agree, Hecky has to use the squad well. The days when players are expected to play on through injuries are long gone.
 
I agree with others that we need to sign another midfielder if possible, because it doesn't seem like we can rely on Doyle staying fit all season and I don't think we have a good enough replacement anywhere else in the squad, fit or otherwise. He is the all action midfielder that we really miss in that LCM position when he isn't around.

Has Hecky or the club said March?

I must have missed something. I thought we had no idea on return dates for the below?

If,and it’s a big if, we add 2/3 in January, which of the current squad do you remove ?

Apologies Deadbat , this might be the first time I haven't preceded the list with words to the effect of "my guesses around timescales are the following..."

RND & Brewster dates are based on the recent article by a Welsh journalist that said RND will be out for at least another 10 weeks. Brewster has had the same injury / surgery so his timeline will be similar.

Fleck - more of a stab. Somebody on here said they'd heard his injury is long-term / potentially season ending. PH has said he's not responding well to contact and they've had to go for second opinions.

I've thought about this before and would be interested to know your thoughts.

My starting XI with all fit would be:

...................Foderingham
............Anel......Egan.....Clark
Bogle....Norwood.....Doyle.....RND
...........Berge..................Ndiaye
.......................McBurnie

And my bench would become :
Davies, Baldock, Basham, Osborn, McAtee, Sharp, Brewster.

I'd give Osborn the nod over Fleck as he covers more positions and brings more energy.

I'm torn on McAtee Vs Khadra as I think Khadra might be the better impact sub.
I've gone for McAtee as he's improving quite quickly.

Sharp & Brewster are no brainers.

It means the likes of Robinson, Stevens, Fleck, Khadra & Jebbison don't make the matchday squad.
Tough calls to make, but I don't think we'll be forced to do it often with the volume of injuries we tend to carry.
 
I'd have Fleck over Osborn on the bench.

In an ideal world we'd have that incoming midfielder in for both though and another striker for Sharp or Brewster on the bench.

No cover for LWB then. Osborn covers two, arguably three positions.
 
I'd argue that you remove Baldock as Osborn covers both WBs (and it's not like Bash can't fill in for a short time there either) and add in Fleck.

If we can bring 3 better players in then yes. Stevens, Osborn and Khadra won't be here in June either.

I'd say there's more to it than that. We play a physically demanding game and over several seasons that's going to take a toll. No surprise that the wingbacks are often injured. We've also not signed very athletic players and got them to play like they were athletes. Again, I don't think that helps.
