Hoof ball v2

Pretty much my feelings from Tuesday, and now this half. One dimensional, and very naive. Are we trying to set records for the amounts of times and players are offside?

Just got back from the game...
  • We are playing a poor mans version of Kevin Blackwell hoofball
  • Duffy looks OK
  • Sharp was our best player by a mile
  • Scrappiest game I've seen for a while
  • What's wrong with playing the ball on the f*cking floor
  • George Long needs his P45 handing to him
  • Lacking a playmaker to replace Basham
  • We're still getting bullied physically
  • Obvious we don't have the players to play the way Wilder wants
  • Defence looked OK
Overall a very poor game of football from two unexciting teams I'm afraid. Based on that we will be lucky to make the playoffs and without a doubt do not deserve the favourites tag once again.

Lots to do...

I was horrible to watch, don't relish another 22 of those to suffer through.

Decent summary. Though till Billy scored (& what a finish it was), thought he was as useless as he was on Tuesday.

Just hope it's a stop-gap sort of thing until Wilder can get a couple more key players in (especially a replacement for Basham).

Ugly, really ugly football.

The 2 centre halves O'Donnell and Wilson just hoofed the ball 60 yards every time they got it.
I can't remember Long rolling the ball out at all today and our lass would have saved the initial shot which he parried for their goal.
I think Billy and Leon Clarke will score goals but the final ball in today was dire.
There is a lot of work to do for Mr Wilder.

we are CRAP

CW has signed some useless players.

reminds me of the last time we got relegated from this league.

This team hasn't got a clue - not a single clue how to play. Been the same in Pre-season.

Clappers welcome to comment - I am firmly in the other camp now.

Can't disagree with the OP.

I saw the Rochdale game last season at the Lane. Cracking match, where we were poor defensively but created enough chances to win three games.

Today's game was crushingly mediocre even before the goal. I was expecting us to come out guns blazing 2nd half and take the game to Rochdale, to match the style I heard we played at Bolton. We did not. We were extremely poor, and ultimately it took one piece of quality to rescue a point. Yes, we then had a brief few minutes of urgency, but ultimately we can probably be relieved to come away with a point.

This is a team with a lot of new faces and it'll take time for all of them to settle. But I have to say I was not encouraged by today. To say it was "a bit hoofy" would be an understatement. Can anyone confirm if Pinchy is ok?

Ratings from me:

Long 4/10 – a first half that displayed one instance of his strengths and many instances of his weaknesses. He was already extremely fortunate as he dropped a ball in the 6 yard box – luckily that was punished. For the goal, it wasn't a particularly strong shot, may if I'm generous have had a deflection, but it should have been pushed sideways to touch or around the post – not right back from where it came. In between was a very good save after defensive dithering. Bugger all to do 2nd half.

Brayford 5/10 – he looks completely out of sorts. Hesitant on the ball, won't take people on, slow to react, less "all action". I don't know if it's attitude or the injury, or a fear of committing in case he gets injured again, but he's a shadow of himself. I remember when Geary returned post-injury you could see while he was trying to do what he'd always done his body wouldn't allow it. We're not seeing Brayford trying to be the old Brayford. Very worrying.

Hussey 6/10 – guilty of too much hoofing and looked a bit sluggish, but was solid enough and put quite a few decent deliveries in – particularly for the goal.

O'Connell 6.5/10 – looked generally quite solid I thought.

Wilson 6.5/10 – as above, though looked a bit more comfortable on the ball.

Duffy 6/10 – mixed bag. One abysmal corner in front of the Kop, two or three really good pieces of skill. Subbed shortly after he'd put in the best cross of the game – width disappeared when he went off.

Done 5/10 – predictably poor. He isn't a winger. He isn't a first choice forward. Though it will embarrass the Superstore imagery, I'd look to move him on if an offer were to come in.

Fleck 6.5/10 – quite clearly the quality player on the pitch, but a virtual spectator for large portions of the game as we hoofed it over the midfield. I hope tactically today was a one-off, because if it isn't he is completely wasted as a signing

Basham 6/10 – seemed to care, and made a few decent challenges and bursts forward. Really should have shot towards the end as he approached the area after a great run, inexplicably passed backwards to the opposition.

Clarke 6.5/10 – won everything he was asked to win. Lots of effort, unlucky with his effort from Duffy's cross second half. Ref gave him nothing.

Sharp 6.5/10 – super finish for the goal, worked hard with poor service. Tried to drive us on 2nd half, and seemed to link better with Clarke as the game wore on

Subs

Scougall – did little
Chapman – also didn't do a lot of note to be honest, but he's only been here a day

I was saying the same thing also reminded me of Blackwell tactics. No matter what the oppositions strengths even if they have two giant cbs at the back just smash it long.
Hope it's not a sign of things to come because it really doesn't suit the players we have.

4 for Long is generous I would have gone 1 or 2.

Why is anyone surprised at how poor Brayford is? Defensively he has the positional sense of glass vase that has been placed in a field full of Rhinoceros

Fleck is possibly regretting moving here if that is going to be the style of play, much as Leon Brittan did, the game is going to pass him by.

Clarke was worth a seven, won most things In the air but no one won the second ball.

My assessment was that last season we played a nice keep possession good but slow build up game.

Under Adkins and even Clough we looked a good team playing in 2nd gear and lacking penetration.

Today reminded me of Blackwell. It was more direct sometimes aimless long ball.

What I found ironic was that the aimless long ball was sometimes effective causing panic in their defense.

I used to say that under Warnock and Blackwell when the players were on song it was exciting but when heads drop with mis placed passing it's almost embarrassing to watch.

I had a chuckle to myself at times today as we looked so poor.

Not surprised here - a poor example of a full back.
Wilson will also prove to be a poor signing, with Hussey not far behind.

Apart from O'Connell, we have a defence that is shockingly poor.
Basham and Done in midfield - we'll lose many more than we win.

Judging on the success we had with it today, it option we don't have this season either.
I wouldn't know on that, but we certainly didn't even attempt to play with the ball last year. It sounds like we've learnt how to kick it a bit further

It would have been a 3 or 2 had there not been the save at 0-0, but yes perhaps generous.

I'm not sure anyone was worth a 7. Compared to our home opener last season this was quite a few steps down. But it's still very early and hopefully they'll gel quickly. Given Wilder's words on not playing square pegs in round holes, I'm not at all sure what he's thinking having Done and Scougall manning the wings when they're on the pitch.

Swiss - the play last year was poor - but at least it had a style and a pattern that the players knew and understood.

The play today was clueless, with no discernible pattern anyone could work out.
We have no idea what CW is heading for - he says one tthing and the players do something else.
We once AGAIN have NO players who know how to play against an opposition that deny us space.

We are clueless and have a manager at present that has nailed his colours in pre-season and now to this 4-4-2 and these players.

This team, and style will be worse than David Weir.
