I'm so confused by some posts. First game, Billy has one disallowed for offside, Clarke misses an absolute sitter. Second game, Billy sets up Clarke for a brilliant chance, Clarke scores from another cross. Third game, Clarke almost scores but looks like he was pulled down by McGahey, Billy turns in a brilliant finish from a set piece.

Both of them have bagged. They both could have had more with a bit more luck or composure. Yesterday was largely hopeful punts forward - that's the thing that needs to be worked on. Not talking about dropping a twenty goal a season striker on the back of three games and one goal. That and our woeful goalkeeping and shady defence.

Long-ball is an approach like any other, I don't think it will work in the current team because we lack the height and/or pace to get on the end of the ball.
By the same token, the keep-it-on-the-floor-at-all-costs approach doesn't work if all you're capable of doing is passing sideways and backwards, and in terms of "entertainment" it is equally dreadful to watch.

You need balance, pass when you can, whack it when you need to. After 6 years down here, the only entertainment I want to see is the ball going into the net by any means necessary. Attaching an 'ethos' or 'philosophy' to how you play is nonsense quite frankly.

There is a time and a place to play a ball upto Clarke as an option, we don't need to do it all the way through a match, it was excruciating to watch. I fear the way this season is going if we continue to play the same way, TD.

Never has a self-description been so appropriate, and yet so understated, as that of old Shithouse.

I have had many disagreements and disputes, some quite fervent, with fellow members on here, both old and new let it be said, yet still managed to preserve a reasonable dialogue.

This one is quite exceptional. A deeply unpleasant individual who would serve this forum best if he were to fuck off forthwith. That won't happen of course. Barnacles cling on for dear life.

This team hasn't got a clue - not a single clue how to play. Been the same in Pre-season.

The team that got relegated from this League in 1981 were badly managed and may have had no bottle. But in terms of quality they were a million miles ahead of some of the shyte that's played for us over the last few seasons, even accounting for the fact that this team hasn't been relegated.........Yet.

I think Kenworthy, Hatton, McPhail, Waugh and Matthews would walk into this team if the clock could be turned back

Very good observation and something I wholeheartedly agree with, I hope we put my fears to bed in the next few games, ST. We need new players and a better game plan big time, it should be an interesting next couple of weeks anyway.

I dont welcome your attacks on Bassett or your views on ex players and current posters but i do agree with the above.

In fairness I was brought up on John Harris with the likes of TC, Alan Birchenall, Geoff Salmons etc etc and (like you) I really dislike the aimless punting of a ball in the direction of a target man (which, by the way, is not even Clarke's strength as he's much better with the ball to feet) in the hope that we might pick up some scraps from any flick ons etc. However, I think you do Bassett a disservice. Under both Warnock and Blackwell we played a lot of "hopeful" punts but I think it was more structured that that under Bassett. The main plan then was to hit early long balls but generally to the flanks to Bryson and Roberts so that they could whip in crosses (and they were both very good at that) to Deane and Agana. I can live with elements of that interspersed with some control of posession and high intensity but I suppose I'd then be watching the likes of Bayern Munich.

The hoofball was awful to watch and ineffective. As others have said - you have a player like Fleck - you want him to get hold of the ball and dictate the game. He isnt going to do that with the ball going over his head. I hope it is not used like that again, but with Clarke up there, it will always be a temptation.

Ignore him. He'll never give Bassett any credit. He was boycotting at the time anyway so he has no idea what it was like. He preferred Billy McEwan.
