If things carry on as they are it'll have to be a big board

Perhaps a Spinning Wheel of Death?

We could suggest this to be the half time entertainment at home games? It'd be a belter and much cheaper than giving a car away or summat.

The club could arrange for one of the unpopular Blades to be strapped to the Spinning Wheel of Death, then get that Paul Daniels or even a supporter, to throw 5 knives at him until:
a) one of the knives hits the torso of the quivering unpopular Blade which would end the game or
b) the unpopular Blade shits his pants which again, would end the game.

My choice would be that fuckin Nosworthy. I still get the screaming habdabs when I think of him in a United shirt.

Scary

I've been asked to produce a painting to commemorate the clubs 125th anniversary. This will take the form of a squad photo featuring fan favourites from all time. Doesn't have to be just players either - iconic managers, fans, officials etc may have a slot in there aswell.

So, who's in? Doesn't have to be the 'best' players but the ones you'd intrinsically link to SUFC as fans of the club.
Jack, the little old man from Shirecliffe who used to work at the groundfor stadia catering way back in the 1970s. Made my mother and me really welcome, a great character, he ensured that even before I worked there, that I got free entry to watch Kenworthy, Stainrod, Edwards, McGeady, Hamson and Ludlam, in the reserves, all because my mother worked for stadia. Good times..i got to the lane each Saturday at 930, on first team games, basically went round the ground with Jack , storing pies at the various kiosks, etc, and I then sold snacks to the EDS in the juvenile pen at the corner of John Street by the kop.

If part of the brief is to create talking points ergo garnering extra publicity, there's no way you can't have The Maestro Tickler.

You only want him in there because you've got one eye on Mary's birthday present!

Presty, just a suggestion for the "scenario" of the painting.
In view of the number of potential Blades that will be suggested to you, why not consider doing something along the lines of the Sgt Peppers album cover with all of them stood on the Kop? Just a thought for you.

Good call, Sir. I'd already got a group huddle, band of brothers, arms around each other scenario in mind rather than a squad photo - I may include the old cricket pavilion and one of the newer stands as part of the back drop depending on how it develops.

I was asked to do a similar thing about 12 years ago by what was then called the Hall of Fame. This was my effort;
index.php

Badger, G Shaw, Foulke, J Shaw, Hagan, Currie, Edwards, Needham, Gillespie, Deane, Woodward.

The brief was to include at least one player from every decade of the 20th century, who must have played at least 250 games for the club, and which could have formed a team in a recognisable line up.

View attachment 7074

I have that on my wall along with about 8 more of your prints ;)

Surely Nick Montgomery should be in the drawing, what a shite player he was. I mean, he only played 400 times.

Kenny, Tonge & Jagielka were all present during our most succesful spell in recent times

I would not include Kenny on the basis he is a drug test failing wanker who shat on the club when we had stood by him.

Harry Thickett................

I can't help but think that a formulaic representation of key players thro the ages is not right though. I'd prefer something concentrating on the fans and a bit abstract ?

How about say 5 representationsof fans through the ages with a changing Bramall Lane in the background. Could we find 5 or even 6 generations of fans in one family. I can offer 4 that's all.

Prests?

He was seriously considered, but who to leave out?
He is easily one of the best players we have ever had. 129 goals in 429 games for 11 years which is very good for a left winger (all his seasons for us were in the 1st division), scored the goal that won us the FA Cup, provided many centres for Harry Johnson and Jimmy Dunne to convert. 7 England caps. Edwards might have been a great finisher (he was a hero to me between 1977 and 1986) but he has never scored in the top division. My best 11 players for from 1889 to 2000 would be
Foulke
Badger
G.Shaw
J.Shaw
Needham
Gillespie
Woodward
Currie
Hagan
Tunstall
Dunne

Good point, and I wouldn't disagree with your team, but my brief was to include at least one player from each decade - no-one from the 80s or 90s in your selection.

Some off field United characters - as has already been mentioned Shred, he'll probably not thank me for suggesting him but Matt Bell (Flashing Blade editor, numerous United books, fans piece in the Green 'Un for years), Mick Rooker, plus many other well known Blades away regulars that would be worth a good shout. If you want to be really controversial what about some of the main lads from the Beeb?

Would love to see, Fatty Foulks, Alan Kelly, Dave Holdsworth, Vass Borbokis, Curtis Woodhouse, Phil Jagielka, Chris Morgan, Brian Deane, Fjortoft, Agana, Marcelo, Jimmy Hagan, Woodward, Harry Maguire, Petr Ndlovu and Pesch on it

If it’s a Sgt Pepper’s type montage, perhaps we could camouflage a character. He’ll have a red and white hat and scarf.

We can then have a competition “Where’s Wooly?”.

Paul Woolhouse still goes to games you know …………………….

Gillespie broke his leg in 1914 and didnt really recover until after the war (fans had not seen him for a long time and many didnt recognise him cos his hair had gone!). Hagan played less than one season in the league in the 1930s!

Only a bit of a wind-up ;)

I bow to your superior knowledge Silent! Gillespie still played in the 1910s though! And one season in the 30s for Hagan was enough to satisfy the criteria!

If I was going to be completely pedantic, I could include Needham as a representative of the 1910s as his last game was in 1910 - depends whether you count the decade as beginning in 1910 or 1911!

As you can imagine, it was pretty hard to select a team from the remit given! I wish they could have allowed me to have a subs bench!

Joe Carr was killed at Dunkirk in 1940 and Harry Hampson died of septicemia in 1942 or 1943
