With size 14 feet and it been pre Internet days I used to play 11 a side in normal trainers. Couldn't take the stick any more and retired at 14 years old. I came out of retirement like a WWF wrestler when they started selling them on the Internet.

Puma Pele Rio were a bit flash

had a pair of pele rio trainers navy blue with pale blue flash, bought em in sheff town centre before a match. no shop sold em in leicester, in the days way before intnet. mates envious as hell, absolutely loved em

Mate at school had parents who didn't want him to play football, so refused to buy him boots. He was dead keen so wore wellies and had to play in goal. Not a huge problem until goal kicks and the welly would fly off and he had choice of retrieving welly that had landed 20 yards away or staying in net in his socks..

Opposition soon caught on and some evil yoof from somewhere like Parsons Cross started to stand on his wellie!

Parents just don't know the effect they have, evil yoofs from Parsons Cross, however, know exactly what they are doing!

That is very funny, flying welly ,lol

My kind of thread this!! Love it.

Best boots I had....Patrick Liverpool. As a striker back then I scored friggin loads of goals and put it firmly in the boots I had! Loved em.
I also recall some hummel boots I had in 80's that had a bit of cushioning on the heel like a trainer. At the time I thought it was brilliant and they were incredibly comfortable.

However, as with all my boots at the time they were black with white stripes in some form though the Hummel I think had a little bit of green in there too....my brain can't recall for sure.
Don't recall there being much of a choice either, but saying that I got one pair of boots only at Christmas, soft ground as standard and wore them regardless of surface. I didn't go trying them on, and despite always telling my old man how I loved the puma kings and adidas world cups that some lads had I never got any. They lasted til next Christmas or tough.

No wonder I have stumpy toes and suffered with shin splints (I now realise was the reason I was in agony on my lower legs) when my feet grew quickly around puberty I must have been struggling.

Then, after stopping football to work, then going into my current career I started playing again once I knew they couldn't sack me and had to pay me if I got injured. What boots did I buy?? Puma King....and you know what...they were shit. The insides basically fell to pieces in less than a season. I'm sure the ones I was jealous of Curtis Woodhouse having were much better back then....mind you he was getting them for nowt half the time with teams trying to turn his head!

Patrick Platini, Nike Tiempo, and retired wearing New Balance Bryan Robsons

Remember having some Patrick with six front studs instead of the normal four like this but also had four rear studs .

Like 3/4 of the way to a moulded sole.

No idea what the boot name was.

Rugby studs there, when i was at school i was forced to use them as we played rugby, so it was a case of changing them out and getting my blinged up aluminium tipped studs for footy. I was still shite, but at least my boots looked good

One thing with the umbro boots, they had studs which had a screw which was probably about a 5mm diameter, very clever from umbro as it meant only their studs could be used. The stud key was also a different shape

And as good a Swimmer as Michael Phelps with flippers like that;).

Can't remember my first boots but they would have been cheap, then got Patrick Keegans with the green stripes, however my favourites were a pair by Lotto, not very fashionable I know but they were really comfy and I thought I played better in them.

I always liked plain and simple Adidas boots.

My Saturday job in the mid-80's was in Alpha Sports on Woodseats. I used to help frustrated parents with grumpy/picky children buy boots by asking if they were Wednesday or United and then saying "these are like Brian Deane's" or "these are like David Hirst's". Always worked a treat. Maybe sold some of you lot some boots???

Surprised String hasn't chipped in on this thread.

Greetings from Lanzarote!... so...Rough chronological order as far as the memorable pairs I can remember:

'81/2 Patrick Lima (white stripes)
'83/4 Adidas World Cup (custom red studs)
85/6 New Balance (white 'N', most comfortable boot ever worn)
87 Nike Tiempo (gold swoosh a la Peter Withe)
88/89 more Adidas (poor mans World Cup types)
90-93 No boots required as at art college and Uni, where drinking and dance music reigned
94 Puma Kings (ala Glynn Hodges, still owned)
95 Adidas Copa Mondial (still going strong)

What I would say stringjunior is that the New Balance were like playing in running shoes, so comfortable, but in my early teenage years I think the boot I always wanted (but was astronomically expensive) were the Puma SPA Kings with either white or yellow heel detail. You had arrived if you had those, the only guy I knew with SPA's I believe was super blade Paul Gledstone round on the cul-de-sac... (if you're there Paul.. ey-up! top boots lad)

As a kid my dad always took me to get my Patrick boots from that sports shop near the Tivoli end in Rotherham - then later teens turned to Puma Kings metal studs and Adidas Copa Mundial moulded, my dad wasn't so keen shelling out for them so had to fork out for them myself using birthday/xmas money!

Inspired by Serie A on channel 4, as a kid inj the 90s my best pair were my Diadora boots with illuminous yellow detailing - a bit fancy dan for a substitute! They were also the first pair that were purchased new rather than handed down from cousins - that collection included Patrick and various little known makers of plain black boots with a solid plastic sole which housed the studs.

My favourite boots where my first ones a treat for getting in the school team.........Patrick Lima but I suppose in quality S.P.A Kings weren't too shabby which came later. As an adult got a cheap pair of Nikes (Tiempo I think) lasted me years.

Oh most comfy pair I ever owned was a pair of Joma I brought back from Spain
