Favorite Blades past and present.... but Why?

For me it is hard to pick either TC or Woody as my number one.

TC did magical things that made the ball talk

Woody was the best at striking the ball when it ame to set pieces or from open play. Far better than Beckham (honest, I am not being biased). Only Le Tissier came close to Woody

I can't really comment on Woody or Currie as i was not old enough to see either of them play.

Carl Bradshaw was Sheffield United personified for me. Good enough for the top flight whilst never threatening to make the higher echelons, a fierce desire to win, down to earth, hard as nails, a nasty streak when required, paying no heed to reputation and hating wednesday!

In my dream match, Bradders would be playing on the right hand side and would be up against Stuart Pearce. 'Psycho' never looked very hard when he was up against Bradshaw!

In the Premiership relegation season, Bradshaw stood head and shoulders above the rest of the team. He looked a top quality right back and would somehow carry the game to the opposition from there. Was a sad day for me when he went to Norwich.

Just below Bradders would be the Holy Trinity of Montgomery, Jagielka and Tonge. They played a massive part in the re-birth of the Blades under King Warnock, have talent and a willingness to work, a genuine love of the Blades and, off the pitch, are all cracking lads. The break up of the HT is just one of a million heartbreaking things about our relegation in 06/07. Do the right thing Blackwell and bring back Tongey. How good would he look in a midfield 5 freed up by two terriers alongside him in the middle?

As a young lad, Edwards was my big hero but it's hard to carry on bestowing hero status on him when you hear his whinging voice on Radio Sheffield and comments like 'I hope the Blades and Hull draw'

I've always had a soft spot for the solid centre half, and we have been blessed with quite a few.

At the moment i'm a big fan of Chris Morgan, but in the past i have always liked Paul Stancliffe, Doug Hodgson, Shaun Murphy, Keith Curle and David Holdsworth

Stancliffe was an early hero of mine too. I played centre half at the time and when my dad took me to Bramall Lane he said "Watch the player in the position youre playing in to learn". So, while Deane and Agana were spanking in goals left and centre, I was sat watching Stancliffe trundling around at the back. And I was still a crap centre half and got moved out to right back. Cheers dad!

GK - Kelly - no contest
DF - Stancliffe or Jags - can't decide
MF - Brown - Purely for 'That Season'
ST - Deano - Started my love for the blades that man

Stan for me was at his best during the 1987/88 relegation season where he did sterling work in keeping the back line together despite playing with luminaries such as Andy Barnsley.

He was also influential as club captain during the subsequent seasons where we gained successive promotions but Bassett knew he was not quite good enough for the top flight so therefore gave him a couple of games at the start of the 1990/91 season before he drifted away from the club

I'm one of the old brigade so get all dewy eyed thinking of the "good old days". My twopennorth for what it's worth :-
GK Hodgy, Tracey, Brown
DEF. Len B. Joe Shaw, Jags.
MID. TC, Trev. Hockey
FOR. Mick Jones, Woody, Deano

For years I've been telling all and sundry about Colin Morris's fantastic goal vs Wigan in Div 4. The run, the cut back and the shot into the top corner. I think it was Darren who pointed out that it was a cross to Edwards who headed in. As the ball was in the air, the Kop jumped up, and I didn't see the header or the ball cross the line, just went barmy with everyone else. Thick end of 30 years and I never knew...

Favourite player of all time is Alan Kelly, no question. My dad got me his signature on the back of a beer mat when I was about 12 and I've treasured it ever since!

Favourite current player is Chris Morgan. I know he can be a bit of a liability at times, but no player personifies what it means to be a Blade more than he does.

My favourite players are Keith Edwards & Colin Morris. Morris was very good going down the wing to cross for Edwards. Best player I can remember for skill has to be Alex Sabella. My dad did tell me that he took me to watch TC but as I was only 3,1/2yrs old can't remember much, so I've picked Sabella ahead. Best strike force has got to be Deane & Agana just awesome, gave Mutch & Bull of Wolves a run for their money, the following season outshone these 2, also speaking about these 2 the older generation at the time also admitted that they were the best they'ed seen as a duo. Goalkeepers has got to be for me Alan Kelly & Mel Rees. Kelly for the game against pigs at Wembley without him could have been a bigger margin, also there were a lot more games as well but this 1 just stands out as a 1 man effort, Rees for the save he did against Ian Rush at Bramall Lane end when Rushy thought he'd scored only for Mel to run across his goal and save the header in the top corner, even the Liverpool fans applauded that save. Just a shame he had to die so young.

Edwards goal against Wigan isnt quite what you described. Morris broke away and collectedthe ball near the byeline before sending in a cross on the floor for Edwards to slot in the late winner. Your description of Morris' solo run and cut back that ended with a shot to the top corner of the net was the same as the one that was disallowed (Edwards was offside) in the 1-1 draw at Mansfield in March 1982

Colin Morris was my boyhood favourite, even more than King Edwards. My best memory was being a ball boy when Colin scored a hat trick in a 5-0 win against Bolton. I got to tell him how brilliant he was walking off the pitch. His second goal that day was a sweet volley into the top corner.

On the subject of Colin Morris, during the Grand Challenge match v Everton at the end of the 81/82 season to celebrate winning the 4th Division title he was instrumental in the goal we scored.

He was on the right wing & a high ball came in towards him. He was only a small bloke but he somehow managed to jump, stretch out his leg & bring the ball down all in one fluid movement. He then set off scampering down the wing to send in a beauty of a cross which Steve Neville turned in. It was a wonderfully crafted goal. I do believe even the referee applauded.

He was remarkable, and looked about 55 throughout his entire career. One can only guess Lee got his looks from his mother.

Brilliant to hear about that match as it was my first ever game at the Lane. Never been able to find out much about it up to now. Can you remember any other details Escafeld? My main memory up to now is having a pepsi and leaving before United scored!

Always rely on someone to correct my memory! Ah well...

My only memory of the Manfield game was that of watching one of their supporters, a gobby kid who was about 6ft 5 and 8st wet through getting chased towards the station by a group of Unitedites. I think they caught him :)

no question - TC, but then I am 53 so I would say that !

I'm 53 too but am going to beg to differ.

TC may the best player we have had in my time but my biggest Blades hero has to be Glenn Cockerill.

Maybe not the most talented but gave his everything, every game and was a shining light in a very poor team.

My memory tells me that one season he single handedly avoided relegation for us.

I don't know why but when he was here my favourite was Roger Nilsen.

Present player i would have to say Kilgallon.

Memory's a bit hazy, about the only thing I can remember from that game is the goal & the 4th Division Championship Trophy being presented & shown off to the crowd. A lovely little trinket it was & it's still the only thing we've won since the 1925 FA Cup. I've just checked the Utd bible & there was just over 9000 there that night.

Earlier that season I am sure that Utd had an advert shown on Yorkshire Televison. It was broadcast towards the end of the season & showed footage from the 0-0 home draw with Bournemouth. The footage was accompanied by someone shouting GOAL! GOAL! GOAL! as it showed Keith Edwards in slow motion advancing on the opposition goal & then shooting over the bar!!!

Am I imagining this or does anyone else remember that advert?

Jock Bryson! Oh how I wish we'd got one like him now... :(

Jock Bryson! Oh how I wish we'd got one like him now... :(

After the PNE Semi 2nd Leg last year, I was commiserating with some of their fans after and turned out I was talking to Jock's Daughter. She was head to toe in North End garb but admitted she really didn't mind who won as her Dad used to play for us but said she doubted I'd remember him!

Lovely girl. Far too good for me though! ;)

Roger Nielson for past, because he was really really lovely and would chat to me when I was allowed on the pitch, these days Hitler has a fanny fit up in his den.

Present....hmm the ones I like have left, but I do like Morgan...he's solid and a motivator of others
