Ever Taken The National Express To An Away Match?

Haha, you and me both!

Last time I went to Cardiff was for my 18th birthday. The venue was Millenium Stadium, the occasion was the play off final, the opposition was Wolves.

And the rest is history 😖
Oh god yeah, well that was the most upsetting game I've ever been to. At least it had a bit of action though.

Oh yes, and flights to Amsterdam. We went Sheffield to Kuala Lumpur via the 'dam.

I flew on an office trip to Eurostat in Luxembourg via the 'dam as well.

My point was at the time of that Belfast flight, nearly everything had stopped and at that time, I recall, Belfast was the only route left standing
When I was living in That London, I worked in Holland for a few months and once flew into Sheffield for the weekend from Amsterdam on KLM.

I'm going away to Cardiff next week and it looks like my usual mode of travel (Handsworth Blades bus) isn't available, and I refuse to pay £118 for a train ticket.

Just wondering if National Express is a decent option?
Very late to the party here, but thought I’d throw an anecdote in there anyway.

Took the national express for an overnighter from Donny to London.

It was years ago and at the time I was skint, and the national express was about £15 or something ridiculous compared to well over £100 train.

I’ve seen some talk about sleeping on the coach but sadly getting on at Donny meant everyone else had already taken that opportunity so they were all slumped across two seats meaning the only chair left was the one next to the bog.

Trip took 5/6 hours, stank of shit and BO, couldn’t sleep, trip ruined.

My belated advice - so belated that it’s too late to be of any use whatsoever - is take the train!

It's been quite civilised so far, Sheffield to Birmingham leg went well. Nodded off for half an hour with my head slumped against the seat in front, now I have a nice red friction mark on my forehead.

London Victoria to Sheffield at midnight will be a killer if I can't get comfortable. I'm just praying that we win to make it worthwhile.

On the plus side it's worked out £3 cheaper than the official United away bus, with the added bonus that I won't get thrown off for hooliganism if I open a bag of Fruit Pastilles too loudly...

I once got the NE up to Bradford. After about 2 hours and finding ourselves in open countryside, one of the passengers (a Bradfordian) asked the driver if he knew where he was, at which point he admitted to being completely lost, so the passenger had to sit up front and direct him in 🤣

Hope your hoop survived the trip, I have a spare rubber ring you can have if you are having seating problems.

I'm worried about my hoop surviving the two hour layover in Cardiff. It's a bastard of a walk to where I need to be and the city of Cardiff seems to think that streetlights are an optional extra...

Found a boozer full of Welsh rugby fans, I think I'm safe.
Now I can be a twat about football.

"Yeah we beat Cardiff today, they're wank. We've got this lad called George Baldock, he scored today cos he's fucking dynamite. His name sounds English but he actually plays for Greece cos of his grandad or some shit.

We were singing 'sheep shagging bastards' at the Cardiff fans earlier, which is ironic, because up in Yorkshire we have the same stereotype said about us, so I suppose we aren't so different. Personally, I've never fucked a sheep, it's never appealed to me, but I'm not one to judge.
Oh, you've just seen someone you know? That's alright, I'll go and get another pint and I'll join you in a bit yeah?"

Hopefully you got the window seat at Victoria for easier sleep. Hoody rolled up against window, kinda thing.

Did that on the Cardiff to London leg, I'm bloody wide awake now, albeit cranky and achey. 3.5 bastard hours still to go.

Are you back yet?

Yeah finally got back at 5am and collapsed on the bed, fuck knows why I'm up now.

24 hours awake, 4 cities, 532 total miles covered, 1 broken pair of specs.

But would I do it all again to taste sweet victory for United?............No, I'll take the bloody train next time, like a normal person.

Up Dem Mighty Blades ✊🏽⚔️

Once got the mega bus to Wembley. Was living in Birmingham at the time. Had the displeasure of driving past Wembley in traffic and not being able to get off the bus and it taking 2 hours to get into London, then an hour to get from London to Wembley.

Best thread for ages- glad you arrived home without contracting diphtheria from public transport safely with three points for the mighty Blades!

Cheers Terry! Glad I could provide a bit of light entertainment to make up for the fact that I'd made the stupidest travel arrangements humanly possible 🤣

For my next trick, I might do Sunderland away, using Mozambique as the starting point.

Bournemouth away in the first Wilson season 2-0 win. Went with around 10 others dressed as Santa's think a picture made the green un of us all. Wad a long journey punctuated with several drinks, I don't think the whole journey was national express just from London onwards. I recall the bog stunk and blocked, then when we got nearer to our destination it burst its banks.
