Been going to the lane since we beat Ipswich 7-0 but barely out of nappies. Remember all county cup games , Anglo scottish Cup games back in the day .
Just had a chat with an old mate , we spoke how early 80s we both stood outside the kop giving blades news out if anyone remember them ? It was a newspaper format and brilliant read .
I was 14 at the time and got free match entry if arrived at 1pm to stand giving the papers out .
Did one match v millwall and they switched ne to the southstand and saw a millwall fan pay admission and 3 others crawl under his legs to get into the ground whilst going thru turnstile and they pulled it off .
After the game walking from the lane to bottom of the Moor and not sure if it was curry's or Dixons every home game and loads of Blades watching the final scores come in on the TV in shop window .
Then a slow walk to high Street to get the 52 bus to handsworth but not without a green-un .
The old women stood outside the old crazy dazy club bellowing GREEN UN come and get your green un . She was louder than the kop.
Bus full of darnall handsworth , Woodhouse blades heading home.
Away games , always went from aged 12 onwards on the football special trains, Colchester in 81/82 was depressing same Bolton away last away game we lost 3-1 at burden Park and thought we had blown promotion till Burnley v hull took us up.
It took 3 hours aswell to get home for an hour and half trip .
If no football special I went into pond Street and booked with nation express coaches and went allover with them , ive still got the bus tickets
Middlesbrough away was a lively one, a 1-0 defeat and boro trying to get on the bus after. Brighton away 85 , the pitch invasion trouble last game of season at goldstone ground went by national for the weekend. Sat on Brighton front Sunday morning waiting for the bus back and sitting on deckchairs and getting charged for it . So we took the deckchairs on the bus , told the ticket bloke you've charged us so we taking them
2 blades landed at pond Street that night with 3 Brighton deck chairs
I did 3 paperounds back then to fund my trips plus a yts course.
Then went everywhere independently from 16 onwards by normal train and had some great adventures everywhere and some dodgy experiences.
I'm travelling back to sheffield today by train from hull and havd so many memories.

Sounds like you got some great memories.

I’m thinking of going to Hull and having a look round where the Housemartins used to live 👍

You will love it.
Come off hull station , turn left , walk up beverley Road about a mile or more towards Newlands area.
You will see grafton Street, walk up it and you will see heatons old house then the grafton pub which is a shrine to the housemartins and beautiful south.
When leaving the pub the main road is there, go left to de grey street to the adelphi club , full of live bands.
In the city centre Paul used to drink in the George and ye old white harte.
Beautiful city , especially old town and marina.

Hull gets a bad rep. Yeah Bransholme is a shithole and there’s some ropey bits in town but it’s no worse than sheffield

Not to disparage our fellow Yorkshiremen, but there are some pretty significant differences. Starting with the crime rate, 40.1 crimes per resident in Sheffield compared to 48.8 in Hull, that's a pretty big difference, nearly 20% higher. From the multiple indices of deprivation, Sheffield is the 57th most deprived Local Authority area, with Hull coming in at 4th most deprived. That's pretty stark and will be reflected in the physical make up of a city, from health and housing to employment and culture.

The one area where we are the same is trees, it surprised me to learn that Hull have a similar number of trees to Sheffield, with Sheffield claiming to be the greenest city in Europe and Hull claiming to be the tree city of the UK.

All that is true, more basing it on my own experiences really.

But yeah the trees bit surprises me

Colchester in 1978 was my first away game, so I guess I'm officially an old Blade.

Remember once going to the old Den in the 1980s. We got there very early and my mates told me that the plan was to go on their end. We walked incognito to their turnstiles, and I was the first to go through. I waited, and waited....no other fucker came through! My mates thought it was hilarious.

Colchester away

Please don’t

Sounds like we’re both the same age & era very similar memories & matches , had some great times & met some great ppl . Enjoyed reading the post brought back a lot of good memories 👍⚔️

I used to get a Blades News at home matches, get another one at school and also get one posted to me as a Junior Blade. I later worked out this will have been a good way of bumping up circulation figures. The ones that were given out at school were rolled up and used to thwack people on the legs.

Orchard park and the Preston Road areas are the very rough areas of hull .
The parks area isn't good either but I've had a pint in all areas and never had a problem . Got to know alot of people in hull and yes alot of poverty but the people are brilliant.

Also done something different in hull and been to both rugby teams games .
Prefer craven park myself in a rough rough rough area .
Took as a guest to both clubs and the rivalry is fierce bordering hatred between East and west hull.
On my way to bramall lane now on the train and there's another blade on .
