Ever Taken The National Express To An Away Match?

When Wednesday played in Cardiff a few years back the team flew from Donny. They then offered the remaining seats to fans for about 500 quid each.

Thinking about it the demise of Donny Airport means that our team won't be flying anywhere again - unless we get into Europe

I reckon that would have been the Stagecoach. I used to get it to Sheffield from Nottingham most weekends when I was at university in the late nineties because it was so cheap (think it was about £2 return back in the day). Used to stop in all manner of places that I never knew existed but as a student I had all the time in the world but no money so it was perfect.

That was exactly what it was, there were 4 of us on it and we did it because it cost next to nothing, it was as you say couple of quid return.

This is definitely not representative of the modern day experience tbf!

I've not looked at the dates, but a lot of the return journey was in darkness, and in the rain, buses (for me) take on a particular depressing and intimidating atmosphere in poor weather and darkness, the randomness of personalities that mix on public transport opens you up because as we know football can be very tribal..

Sore losers do not make for travelling companions..

It was likely a Notts County game as well looking back, possibly a night game..

Personally I’d be praying that some sweaty, selfish, over weight, body odour monster carrying his fast food ration with clothes stinking of last nights beer and curry doesn’t wander up the aisle looking for the seat number next to you. Especially if they’re looking to make a ‘friend’ for the journey.

Strong advice is to buy 2 adjacent tickets if they’re that cheap to avoid me sitting next to you ….

That's a legitimate concern for me actually. I try to give off an aura of 'fuck offness' when out in public, yet people often approach me anyway, and it's always weirdos, scruffs and reprobates somehow.

Yes, don't forget your compliance nappies Woolford of Wall Street
I hope that's a joke. Was a thoughtful suggestion for someone I've never met. Woolford didn't feel the need to comment on it - was easily ignored if desired.

An FFP2 mask could stop him getting something that's going around - but I'm sure you know that. Covid, Hand Foot and Mouth, Norovirus are all knocking about - public transport a perfect place to catch them.

All very unpleasant things to catch, unless you're an invincible macho man perhaps.

I missed three days of work with Hand, Foot and Mouth last week - luckily i get paid for sick days. Child missed school, which was a knock on nightmare.

Got the Megabus down and back for the Huddersfield PO final. Quite a decent option other than not really being able to have a drink.

Take drink with you in a closed bag! Ideally you don't want to be using the coach toilet too often though 😄

It's all good mate, he was just referring to my general antipathy towards masking (because I am actually an invincible macho man you see 😁).

But seriously, thanks for the advice, I'll be better prepared for the journey now.

I have actually flown from Sheffield Airport to a United away match. That's Sheffield Airport, not the one in Doncaster.

Fair enough. I was and still am pro-mask in enclosed spaces, but that's an entirely different topic anyway.

I just remembered I did go on a National Express myself, very early this year, for half of a journey that train was a rip off price for. Was my first time for years. Nobody wore a mask.

Inspired by this thread I actually looked at tickets and travel to this Cardiff this morning, but a 7hr coach each way for me😄👎 and not even cheap tickets.

Cheers for the input everybody, I've decided to take the plunge.

Return journey with a 20% NHS staff discount means it only cost me £37. Can't grumble at all really.
Already looking forward to the “My Take From Seat 12B” thread.
You know - like a guest appearance in a pommpey style report for the rest of us to enjoy. Well, you’ll have time to kill on the way home.
After a general summary of the experience you could follow up with specific scores for things like punctuality, comfort, seat partner, lavatorial conditions, driver standards, sleepability, variety of odour etc etc.

That's an excellent idea! With 7 hours to kill on the journey back, I'll have the perfect opportunity to creatively inflict my sleep-deprived, insufferable knee-jerk opinions on the S2 community.

Surely someone has contact details for Handsworth Blades? I've messaged head guy as you know but nothing back yet

Did that for the Burnley game, from Manchester so was expecting a few Burnley fans on - there were none. Stopping at the services was interesting though…

My mate has friends that live in Swansea so whenever we play Swansea or Cardiff, he goes down there for the weekend and gets the National Express. As you've said, the difference in cost between that and the train is ridiculous.

Used it a couple of times myself too, when I went to see Metallica in Manchester I could have easily driven over (I live in Stocksbridge) but it was only £9 return on the NE, and it picked me up/dropped me off in Stocksbridge. Absolutely no point taking the car, it would have cost me more in fuel and parking.

Coach to Manchester on the morning of the gig, few hours there to do whatever I want before checking into my hotel (few beers, football museum, classic football shirts shop) then the following day the coach back wasn't till about 3pm which was a bit of a pain but again, easy enough to fill the time.

There were fights to Dublin too. My wife caught a flight there from Sheffield to go to a wedding.
Oh yes, and flights to Amsterdam. We went Sheffield to Kuala Lumpur via the 'dam.

I flew on an office trip to Eurostat in Luxembourg via the 'dam as well.

My point was at the time of that Belfast flight, nearly everything had stopped and at that time, I recall, Belfast was the only route left standing

Looks fine to me, no biggy😄👍

I went to Cardiff away when Robson was manager. One of the worst matches I've ever been to. I pray you see a good one today.

Haha, you and me both!

Last time I went to Cardiff was for my 18th birthday. The venue was Millenium Stadium, the occasion was the play off final, the opposition was Wolves.

And the rest is history 😖

Getting huge Yank vibes from this thread and he's going to fake his own forum death from coach farts. It's the only logical explanation for this.
