Down memory Lane.....this day

I remember watching the 1971 tournament on Sportsnight at my Uncle's house in Abney Close. My uncle had colour tv which was quite rare in those days. We beat Glasgow Rangers 3-0 but lost to Southampton in the next round. Sportsnight showed a limited number of games (including a match between old England captained by Billy Wright against an old Scotland team) and there was not a second of any of our matches were shown. Southampton won the tournament, I think. Dont remember the 1975 one as I was at boarding school and not allowed to stay up to watch tv after 9

11 years ago today 2003. League Cup v Leeds United.

2-1 winners.

Down and out until Jag's rocket. Noddy with the winner not quite so spectacular if memory serves me well.

No doubt someone will find some footage :)

The most mental I've ever gone at a game! Can't believe it's 11 years ago! Left the ground that night higher than any heroin addict has ever been!

crikey, so many memories....... the abiding one is trying not to be sick after screaming and jumping about like a proper maniac, and being so out of breath I was almost dead

Such happy memories. I remember all manner of whiny cunts on Radio Sheffield after the game, sour as fuck 'cos they left early. It's because of results like this that I stay right until the death at every game, no matter what.

I'd forgotten how incredible that Jags goal was.

6th November 1971

Went to see Blades win 2-1 at West Ham with Gil Reece scoring both goals (the first when he reacted quickly to a half chance and the second was a header from a Woody corner). On the way home the Blades fans in my coach were anxious to get back home in time to see MOTD as the game at Upton Park would be featured that evening. I was dying for a wee and told my dad so. The fans in my coach groaned as the coach stopped on the hard shoulder on the M1 for me to relieve myself (I think I was the only one taking a leak and it wasn’t easy doing it on the side of the coach). When we arrived in Dronfield I knew we had missed the start of MOTD. We switched on the tv as soon as we arrived home. The first thing we saw was Terry Anderson of Norwich running on the left wing and then crossing the ball for Peter Silvester to head it in for Norwich to take the 2-0 lead at Hull. It was a big relief for my dad and myself as it was obvious that MOTD hasn’t shown our game yet! when the SUFC MOTD video was produced in 1991 I was disappointed that the goals of that game wasnt featured and I have not seen any footage of the goals since watching them on MOTD 42 years ago

7th November 1981 - a home game against Tranmere in the 4th Division. We won 2-0 and it was memorable for featuring both Edwards' 100th goal in all competitions and Hatton's 200th league goal. If I remember correctly Hatton's goal was a result of a storming run down the right wing by John Ryan, a cross and Bob sliding in to score at the far post.

Remember it well Dazzler - one of my first games as a regular rather than itinerant supporter and in the NSS when we could still get in for half price (I was 16).

It was just before my 15th birthday and me and my brother were also SS regulars that season.

I've gone for 43 years ago today and a 3-1 win at Blackburn in our promotion season.
TC, David Powell and Billy Dearden were the scorers.

The reserves also won that day 2-1 against Blackpool. John Flynn and Ian Holmes with the goals.

Programme came with the Football League Review for those who can remember them.

Went to that Blackburn game despite missing the whole of the 1st half! We set off from home around noon but my dad then parked his car on the little road at the back of the White Swan. He said that he was going to tell two or three of his friends at the Midland Hotel pub (which then became Sidings in 1982 when Len Badger became the landlord and now it is the Dronfield Arms) to join us in travelling to Ewood Park. He told me the names of his friends but I hadnt a clue who they were. I sat in my car for ages before my dad returned to the car with Nip Hague (who hated anything blue!) and Graham Beresford (I then got to know them quite well travelling with them to away games in the early to mid 1970s). We set off rather late. Blackburn's ground is quite easy to find as it is on the south of Blackburn. We got in the ground at half time and I was annoyed that my dad had spent too long in the Midland! I was told that we were leading by a goal scored by TC. I was pleased that we were leading but still annoyed that I missed the goal. Early in the 2nd half a Blackburn corner was half cleared and Alex Russell hit a tame low shot but Hodgy was slow in coming down to stop the shot as it rolled into the net. Hodgy had made costly mistakes in the 3-3 home draw against Bristol City two months earlier so it did look like that he had no longer become a top keeper. Not long after that, Bill Dearden had a clear chance in the goalmouth but was brought down by a defender and the ref awarded us a penalty. Thinking about the match today, I realised that it was the first time I saw us get a penalty. Back to thee match, I turned round to my dad asking him who was going to take the penalty but he didnt seem sure (again thinking about it today the last penalty we had was 12 months earlier (of course I didnt know that during the Ewood Park game) and it wasnt long before I became a committed Blade which would explain my dad's hesitant answer). Then we saw Dave Powell picking the ball up (I was stood behind the goal) and walking to the spot, my stomach was in knots as I wasnt sure if he is a good penalty taker. He send Roger Jones the wrong way to put us 2-1 up. Dearden got our third. After the game I went autograph hunting outside the ground's player entrance (we kept BST between 1968 and 1972) so there was still daylight but I think Nip and Graham would prefer go straight back home for the beer! I was surprised to see Eddie Colquhoun boarding the coach with a fag in his mouth!

Watching Jags' goal made me think of one by Keef although not quite as good it was a bit special. He had had a few chances through the game and had skyed them all. I was on the Kop with a mate and as the ball fell to Keeeeeeeef my mate said 'not again' and then after celebrating with the Kop just looked at me and said 'what do I know?' From memory I think it was the winner.

That would be the home game v Charlton on 2/12/06. Gilliespie got the winner in the last minute with a shot from about 25 yards after a corner was cleared. Morgan had scored the first as we won 2-1.

On the front cover Liverpool's Larry Lloyd is tackling Woody in the previous home game. I went to the match at Highbury in the first League Cup match. First time I got on the London Tube. Swiss Cottage was the first Underground station I got in. As for the replay there was news in the Star that TC was doubtful for the replay because he had scalded his foot dropping a pan of water at his home. Before the game in front of the spectators who had arrived at the ground early, John Harris gave TC a fitness test with some running behind the Lane End goal. TC declared himself fit and we deserved to win the replay. Woody's 1st goal at the Kop End was quite simple, hitting home a loose ball from about 10 yards. Reece's goal in the 2nd half was more difficult to score. He broke away on the right and Bob Wilson came out of the goal but Reece craftily took the ball further near to the byline surprising Wilson and then chipping the ball over him at an acute angle

I don't know how you do it Daz, I can't even remember our last away goal.

39 years ago today November 9th 1974.

United travel to Kenilworth Road for a Division 1 game, which is settled in favour of the Blades by TC.

United moved into the Top six, but Harry Haslam, Luton's manager claimed that 'United were the worst team Luton had played all year'.

It was definitely the game against Charlton. I didn't realise it was so late in the game. That makes it even more special. It even made goal of the month.

46 years ago today 1967......United 1 Weeds 0

Woody played in goal for over 80 minutes, and Mick Hill got the winner

My dad told me (years later) that Woody was brilliant in goal and got a standing ovation after the game. Must have played like Tim Krul did yesterday! Highlights of the 1967 match was shown on ATV (our ITV channel before YTV started in July 1968) in thee next day. I wonder if there is still footage of Woody's wonder show and Mick Hill's goal in the archives somewhere?

I was at that game although I can't remember much about it,but i have a vague memory of Woody going in goal. Then wasn't it the Man City game when Tom McCallister got injured he went in goal again....mind you Jags didn't do a bad job at Palace that day.

Woody's stints in goal

Nov 67 v L**ds (h) for 80 mins
Sept 69 v Newcastle (h) in league cup for 15 mins (Hodgy was unfit to play in next game and Graeme Crawford played v Norwich). Earlier in the Newcastle game Woody scored direct from a corner
Aug 1970 v Orient (a) for 5 mins
Nov 1972 v L**ds (a) for about 20 minutes after McAlister was knocked unconscious by Micky Bates and Allan Clarke tapped in his 2nd goal
Oct 73 v Man City (h) Rodney Marsh broke McAlister's leg and Denis Law tapped in the equaliser. Woody's stint in goal was for about 20 mins but he conceded a goal for the 1st time when he had a shot covered and Bill Dearden tried to head it away but the ball changed direction and Woody had to re-adjust himself to stop the ball, got his hand to it but unluckily he couldnt push the ball out of the way
