The two programmes from that day: 1st team v Oxford, Reserves at Liverpool.November 28th 1970. Blades 3 Oxford 0
The previous day was a sad day for me as my maternal grandmother had passed away at her home in Hartley Brook Road. In the 1st half a Oxford youngster, Mick Way got carried off the pitch after a strong tackle by TC. My dad told me that Oxford's number 11 (who was fat and balding) was going after TC as he was upset with the tackle. Every time TC had the ball, Oxford's number 11 went for him but was too slow to get close to him. I looked up for the name of the number 11. It was Ron Atkinson so I dismissed him as an "over the hill " footballer not realising that he would be well known in the next 40 years! In the 2nd half TC opened the scoring with a powerful low shot and soon after John Tudor increased our lead with a header and then Woody made it 3-0 with an unstoppable shot from outside the penalty box

33 years ago 1980, goals galore at Fellows Park as United draw 4-4 with Walsall. (We'll not mention the return match that season)
Hatton (2), Butlin and Kenworthy

That was a interesting game. We were 2-0 and 3-1 up and Walsall then pulled it back to 3-3. In injury time Bob Hatton made it 4-3, only for Walsall to almost literally walk the ball in from the kick off.
Of course, had we won that one, Walsall would have been down prior to kick off on 2nd May 1981 :-(
Would have thought there would have been some Sunday Pig Roast chat to cheer us all up after the latest SNAFU...
Jack Whitham playing for Liverpool reserves...I guess that was after his time with the pigs? The two programmes from that day: 1st team v Oxford, Reserves at Liverpool.

Yes, he was sold to Liverpool for £57K in April 1970. Liverpool signed John Toshack in November so Whitham didnt play many games for Liverpool. Only 15 appearances in 4 years despite scoring 7 goalsJack Whitham playing for Liverpool reserves...I guess that was after his time with the pigs?
Later he ran a pub opposite Wisewood comp.

Is that Pedro Verde on the front of that programme?Sunday's offerings: December 1st
34 years ago, a 3-2 win over Plymouth. Sabella, Speight and Bourne with the goals.
and a Youth team offering from 20 years ago with the blades crashing out the FAYC 2-1. Can't see that I remember too many of the Liverpool team apart from David Thompson who looked promising early in his career, although I think he came on trail for us under Robson and then retired immediately. Only surprised we didn't offer him a three year contract on £30,000

7 years ago. A 2-1 win in the Premier over Charlton. Morgs and Keef with the goals.
And the reserves 41 years ago 1972, a 2-0 win over Manchester City, Staniforth and Warboys scoring.View attachment 6714 View attachment 6715
I was only 6 at the time, but I clearly remember my dad going to that reserve game and coming home raving about our no.5. His exacts words were "that man mountain with the golden locks, stood like the Colussus of Rhodes between our goal and the Man City forwards, mark my words lad, he will be a England regular in a year or two".
If only Harris, Furphy, Sirrel and Haslam could have seen it....

I remember receiving a letter at my school from my dad explaining about his Saturday afternoon at home and wallpapering the lounge, he had just switched on Radio Sheffield or Hallam just after 3.15pm. The first thing he heard was "Kenworthy has scored to put the Blades 4 up". He nearly dropped his wallpaper in surprise thinking that we had scored 4 goals in the first 15 minutes. He wasnt aware that the match kicked off at 2.15pm (dont remember the reason for the early kick off)Ah the joy of Six......
Two of United's biggest away wins since the war.
19 years ago Luton Town 3 Sheffield United 6 (Gage (2), Veart (2), Hodges, Scott)
The first time United had ever won by that scoreline away from home, and the first time they had scored six away from home since 1977. (see below)
Again on December 3rd, Cardiff City 1 Sheffield United 6 (Calvert, Campbell (2), Kenworthy, Hamilton, Woodward). This was United's biggest away win since 1958 when they beat Rotherham at Millmoor by the same scoreline.

Today's offering: 7 years ago: Newcastle 0-1 Sheffield United (Webber)
Great weekend in Newcastle, with a geordie mate, I hadn't seen for 10 years, although my abiding memory was falling down a long flight of stairs in some pub down at the Quayside on saturday night.

I met Tony Mercer (Black & white Minstrel Show) in the stands before the kick off. My dad told me to get Tony's autograph on that match programme. I had no idea who Tony was as he was without the black facepaint! Blades wore yellow shirts and black shorts for the game. John "Yogi" Hughes (signed from Celtic) ran the show scoring two goals (one of them won MOTD goal of the month).Nice one Daz, its the medication that's doing it
42 years ago: 1971
A real battering for the Blades 5-1, a week after thumping seven past Ipswich.
The old man went, and said it could only happen to United!
