Woody's stints in goal

Nov 67 v L**ds (h) for 80 mins
Sept 69 v Newcastle (h) in league cup for 15 mins (Hodgy was unfit to play in next game and Graeme Crawford played v Norwich). Earlier in the Newcastle game Woody scored direct from a corner
Aug 1970 v Orient (a) for 5 mins
Nov 1972 v L**ds (a) for about 20 minutes after McAlister was knocked unconscious by Micky Bates and Allan Clarke tapped in his 2nd goal
Oct 73 v Man City (h) Rodney Marsh broke McAlister's leg and Denis Law tapped in the equaliser. Woody's stint in goal was for about 20 mins but he conceded a goal for the 1st time when he had a shot covered and Bill Dearden tried to head it away but the ball changed direction and Woody had to re-adjust himself to stop the ball, got his hand to it but unluckily he couldnt push the ball out of the way
Didn't realise he'd been in the goal that many times inbetween the Leeds and City games...another True Blades Legend.

Apart from Jags, Woody was the best emergency keeper we had since 1946 if my memory serves me correctly.

November 12th, not a particularly common date for the Blades to play on, and nothing really special. I've gone for 47 years ago and a 1-1 draw with Blackpool. The game will probably be remembered for Gil Reece breaking his leg. I think Cec coldwell replaced him, and played his final game for United.

It's also memorable for being the date I was born!

My dad went to the game (none of this feminist nonsense then) and I was born at 10pm or so.

looked up in the first 100 years book last night. After that 2-1 defeat to L**ds in Nov 1972, Woody had 133 minutes of being an emergency keeper without conceding a goal. Great feat!

13th November 1971 Blades 2 Coventry 0.

the 1st half at the Lane End, Woody took a corner from the left and then the ball went into the net. Fans were asking who had scored but soon agreed that it was Woody as his team mates ran up to him to congratulate him. Two incidents happened at the Kop End in the 2nd half but I am still trying to remember which was the first that had happened.. Woody’s 2nd goal as he hit an angled shot low past keeper Bill Glazier or was it Bill Glazier’s penalty save diving to his left holding Woody’s effort. Maybe it was vice versa?

A couple of programmes for today: the second of which has a quiz question with it. (see below)

and 43 years ago a 1-1 draw with QPR, and here's a quiz question!!!

What was controversial about the ending of this game?

Addisdon "scored" in the last seconds for what would have been a 2-1 win. Unfortunately the ref blew the final whilstle between the ball leaving Addison's foot and entering the net.

Yes well done Daz, :).....shades of Clive Thomas

QPR fielded many well known players. Those who played for England in the future were Rodney Marsh, Dave Clement , Gerry Francis (who was England’s captain in the mid 1970s) and keeper Phil Parkes also a past England player (and future England manager) Terry Venables. There is a bit of incorrection in the report in the link below. It was us who had scored first in the 1st half. Geoff Salmons had set off on a solo run but he was sent crashing down to earth in the penalty box when keeper Phil Parkes challenged him. Not sure if Parkes had already touched the ball first but the referee John Yates waved play on, John Tudor came running into the box and hit a firm low shot into the net despite a QPR defender getting a foot to the ball in the goalmouth. I remember the photo of that night’s Green Un with our players who had stopped celebrating the goal as they were more concerned for Salmons’ well being as he was still lying face down on the pitch (I think he recovered after getting the cold and wet sponge treatment!). The ref frustrated the crowd with a lot of poor decisions. In the 2nd half Ron Hunt equalised for QPR with a firm header from a free kick. Phil Parkes played brilliantly in goal saving several shots and it was one of the finest goalkeeping displays I have ever seen. In the final minute we had a corner and Colin Addison then fired the ball into the net. We all thought we had scored the winner but the ref disallowed it indicating that he had blown the final whistle before the ball went into the net. After the game there were a few policemen standing just outside the players entrance in the old JSS as they were worried that angry Blades fans would threaten John Yates’ safety!

I remember that clearly. I left the match thinking we had won! But I would have definitely said it was Crystal Palace and not QPR - strange what time does to the memory

17th November 1973. Blades 3 Derby County 0

It was a month after month after Derby surprisingly sacked Brian Clough despise that they were in 3rd position in the league (L**ds won the league with a high number of points). Before coming to BDTBL they had lost two of their previous game. The match was kicked off early because of the energy crisis. In the first half, John Flynn headed a Woody corner to give us the lead. Early in the 2nd half we scored a great team goal with a superb finish. It was started by Len Badger on the right inside our half and a lovely triangle of passes that involved TC and Woody all the way to the right wing and then Woody played a neat one two with TC and then firing in an unstoppable angled drive past Colin Boulton. Eddie Colquhoun made it 3-0 heading in a Woody corner

30 years ago today, away at Wrexham in the Cup

Nobody used to enjoy a trip to Wrexham in the cup. Ask Arsenal :D

No fear, Edwards scores four and Arnott got the other in a 5-1 win

One for the whippersnappers today 3 years ago today:
United 3-2 Palace

Quite a game if my memory serves me well, 5 goals, three penalties and two sending offs. All good stuff for those watching on Sky. United 2-1 down against 10 men with 8 minutes to go, turn it around with Ched and a Boggy penalty.

Team: Simonsen, Calve, Nosworthy, Bartley, Jordan, Britton, Reid, Montgomery, Yeates, Evans, Cresswell

Dont remember that game. I have trouble in remembering games from the last 6 or 7 years. We have been dire most of the time! Or is it because of my age?

26 years ago today 1987

A 4-1 win at home to Reading with goals from Withe (2), Kuhl and Mendonca.

Hans Segers made his debut for United on loan from Forest. He was upset, he had £50 on a 3-1 win.
Still he got his own back a few years later.

Withe's return after his loan spell at Brum when he scored against us. His first goal was a textbook header into the bottom corner from a set piece.
