I see his grandson is in court charged as one Wendys 'boys' causing trouble after the Palace match last year. Some of us have known all along that the Dooley families real love is Wendy and it bothers me greatly that we a have a statue to the man in our car park. There are so many more deserving people than a glorified admin man who supposedly changed allegiances yet has a restaurant named after him at Swillsboro ,his true home.
No proper football lover changes their team no matter how badly they are treated ,Sheff Utd in different ares have treated me appallingly several times in business through the years but I would never change to another club ,especially that scum across the city. Who decided to have the statue of Dooley anyway ?

Get over yourself.

Dooley did a lot of good work for United, hence the statue.

If he or his family are/ were Wednesday fans then so what, he was a real ambassador for United, well respected and regardless of his allegiances, gave his time and efforts to United.

Wednesday's loss, our gain.

Totally agree Sitwell. Wendy through and through yet we get a statue of him. I think the general view was confirmed by the unveiling ceremony watched by a few bored senseless Argentinians and Foxy and Linz.

Blimey, was he ginger in his prime?

It seems unwarranted to question Dooley based on the actions of a relative years after his own death.

And regarding the footballing loyalty thing, I think his statue should have gone in the city centre to reflect his contribution to the two clubs, but I'd never question his value to SUFC over many decades. What he did before his time at United means very little to me.

I can appreciate how people would think in a negative way of him but he was a tremendous man who loved Sheffield United with a passion
A man who would have done anything for the Blades and was instrumental in some of the greatest moments in my Blades lifetime - mainly the Bassett and Warnock promotions
Statue in the city centre instead, yes I'd probably agree with Denver on that one, but I also agree that it means little to me what he did before when I look at all that he did for us after

Whatever his family's allegiance is today, Dooley was 100% a Blade during his time with our club. For many years he would not set foot in Hillsborough after the way SWFC had treated him. He was so much more than a 'glorified admin man' and was actively involved at all levels of the club, from the juniors to the boardroom. He always had time to talk to the fans and there was never a hint of the 'big-time Charlie' about him. He fully deserves his statue.

Of course, Wednesdayites would like to claim a share of him since he was a remarkable striker for their club and at his funeral it was good to see fans from both sides of the city paying their respects.

Sorry Sitters but your wrong on this one.

Dooley = gentleman, pity there are not more like him.

If we are to be held accountable by our families actions, particulalry after we have passed away, there are a lot of people out there in trouble.

Its weak logic to assume that because a member of his family acts in a certain way he inherited that from his forebears.

Can anyone point the Dooley statue out to me please?

The only statues I have seen at the Lane are of Saddam Hussein and a Joe Shaw/Jimmy Hagan hybrid.

Wasn't that w@#$%r Richards there as well? That really riled me. Shouldn't be allowed within a mile of BDTBL unless its for a tar and feathering...

Dave Bassett told a story at Derek's funeral - forgive me if I have got a few details wrong, but it was on the following lines.

Some United players from 'down south' were caught by the Police urinating in the street following a visit to a night club. Rather than take them to court, the Police referred the matter to the club.

"Shall I deal with it?" Bassett asked Dooley. "No, leave them to me," said Derek.

Dooley's dressing down began with "It may be normal for you to behave like that in London, but it's not what we do up here in Yorkshire."

The dressing down continued, all about behaviour of players, pride in the club, etc.. When he had finished the players emerged from Derek's office visibly shaken and close to tears.

I think Derek's grandson would have got similar treatment.

I'm not sure that I can agree with the idea that because Dooley's idiot grandchild has behaved like a chav on glue, it somehow sullies the name of Dooley and all he did, which includes the appointments of both Bassett and Warnock.

Dooley was born a wednesdayite, but his wednesday died on christmas eve 1973. They showed all the class that they usually do at that club, dating back to the betting scandal in 1962, having a chairman now who is up on charges of tax evasion and employing a central defender who is charged with 2 counts of false imprisonment.

Anyway, I digress. The man worked for SUFC from 1974-2006, and gave us 32 years of his life. Even if people do not feel he is deserving of his statue, surely he is deserving of more than having his name sullied because his grandchild is a wanker?

A nicer bloke you could not wish to meet. Dooley was a real gent and will always be a Blade to me.

And yet his family remained Wednesdayites, something I have never been able to understand.

Broomhill and Axel Smeets - Brilliant posts!

Loved the story about Dooley from Bassett Broomhill, a real sense of pride kicks in that he was part of our club. A gent and an ambassador

Easy... you can't educate pigshit.

I personally don't care that the Dooley family are Pigs, that his grandson is a prize prick to boot and that Derek himself played for and managed that set of classless arseholes.

The fact is, from the moment he walked through our doors he worked with dignity and pride for SUFC for over 30 years. If we were going down the road of erecting statues - though I'm not a big fan of the premise to be honest - I can't think of anyone else more deserving than him. That there is a restaurant named after him at the Sty is neither here not there, in fact, I'd say it's typical of those wankers. They sacked him on Xmas Eve, dumped him after years of service. But hey, we'll name the room we serve the meat pies and Bovril in after him and that'll be reight.

Have you seen the pictures of the grandson? He is one ugly fooker! Think he'd been hit in the face with a brick just before the photographer got there

This crops up every so often and every time I tell the same story

On our way to Oxford or some other backwater place ,mini bus brakes down and we limp into some Little Chef or similar ,just get the news from the driver we are screwed and not going anywhere when the old exec coach roles in half full ,Dooley is the second man off being helped by the driver .
One on the lads says "any chance of a lift Derek? only we`ve broke down" .Reply was along the lines of " No ,feck off !"

Thanks Derek

"A nicer bloke you could not wish to meet. Dooley was a real gent "

"Dooley = gentleman, pity there are not more like him. "

Mmmmm matter of opinion

I know if I broke down again I`d sooner Shreds bus pulled in

Now a statue of Shred in the car park theres a thought !

Let us not forget also that Derek also only returned once to Hillsborough between his 1973 sacking and the March 1992 derby - it was for the 1976 FA Cup Semi Final between Derby and Manchester United.

If you read his book, you'll soon realise that anything that was swfc related is irrelevant to him after 1973. United offered him the job in 1974 and he worked for the club then until his retirement in 2006, with a couple of years out in between I think, when either Mike McDonald or one of the other arseholes responsible for the mismanagement of our football club in the 1990's relieved him of his duties.

In his book, he states that when he got home from getting sacked by the filth, his son started to rip down his pig memorbilia from the walls, but that Derek stopped him. He told him that he had brought him up as a pig fan, and he should remain a pig fan. I'm sure that many of us might have done the same thing under the circumstances.

My story is similar many moons ago at a non descript midweek game (Zenith or some othe similar crap) me and a couple of mates were in the South Stand which was extremely sparsely populated. There was aboslutely no one in the Exec red seats bit and hadn't been all game. We decided to clamber over and sat there for about 30 mins close to the end of the game. Dooley then spotted us and hopped down and instead of asking us to shift went on a tirade about people paying money for these seat (but weren't there) and being just an obnoxious twat who proceeded to get us evicted. Dooley I'm afraid might have been good in the boardroom but he had nothing but contempt for the ordinary supporter.

I've heard several similar stories ,I admit I never met Derek but had a lot of dealings with his son ,a complete and utter tosser and a pig.

Dooley may or may not have been a great gent and a shoulder to cry on for managers.

But I remember him as being a senior figure at the club during a time when even by our standards we lacked ambition, drive and imagination as club and had appalling communication with fans in the main.

I'm not saying this was due to Dooley but when people talk about him doing a great job in the boardroom I have never been sure what people actually mean by this and what changes he put in place and what vision he had to take us forward in the modern era.

He may have been a nice guy behind the scenes etc (and perhaps he should have had a different role that played to these strengths) but there is often the implication he achieved great things in the boardroom. Not sure what these achievements were or what his pivotal role was in them?

Jesus pissing hell, have they had him locked up since the incident without access to a barber? If so I think he's been trying to dig his way out with his face, the ugly twat.

I don't know a great deal about Derek Dooley, partly due to being too young to remember some of the stuff he did and partly due to being more bothered about what goes on on the pitch than behind the scenes, but I don't think how a wanker behaves should have much bearing on how people remember his dead grandfather.

What made you think that you deserved to sit in the Executive seats? Maybe you could have asked permission first? If the club turned a blind eye to squatters like you and your mate, others would probably follow. A recipe for chaos.
It's a bit like sneaking into First Class when you've bought a standard class rail ticket. Don't be surprised if you get thrown out.

I think Dooley is great just because it winds up Wendy, I think it's even better that his grandson has acted like a twat and heaped more shame on them.

Pointing out a couple of stories about being "wronged" by Dooley, (coach and South Stand seats) carries no weight really, a lot of people connected with SUFC have done a lot worse....
