Reflecting on Wembley

The team that starts in August will most likely look very different to the one that finished on Saturday, as I've already stated I live in the present so I'm happy to wait and see, predicting the future in football is not my style, it's basically the super six, a total lottery.
It’s when the team which starts in August is worse than the team which finished in May should you start to worry!

I've waited for some of the dust to settle before trying yo put into words how I feel/felt about yesterday.

In play-off defeats gone by I've felt awful, truly awful, after the game.

This time I'd different. Only a small part of me does feel truly awful, but not for the same reasons.

Past defeats hurt because of the desperation to reach the Premier League, what it meant from a football perspective, the match itself and what we served up.

Yesterday - whilst we got a few things wrong, we turned up - failed to capitalise n a dominant first half and we lost grip of a game for 15 minutes which cost us. Talking to many neutrals they couldn't believe we'd lost after looking so in control.

The Premier League? The desperation to reach that dies more each season. I think a lot of us are scarred by last time. Watching football with VAR, for me, is awful. It is slowly killing English football.

The motivation to reach the Premier League is purely financially driven - how can that be right? Football should be about more. You get promoted and have two distinct paths - invest £200m in players to try and survive, risk the future of the club or light investment and pretty much a season of struggle. What choices hey?

So, to explain, the sole reason I feel awful today is my kids (and families all across our fan base) - and selfishly just wanting one special day to experience with them.

I feel like Rory McIlroy before he got his grand slam. Once I've seen us win at Wembley I'll be content.

So, it's very much "win, lose or draw...."

Sorry for the self indulgent long post - read, ignore, roll eyes. Just wanted to know if this was similar to others.
I would have liked to express my feeling in the exact same way. You have put it perfectly. A great post. So Eloquently written. Thank you.

I feel worse. At this moment I am considering calling it a day. I seriously don't know if I can take anymore.
Not just 12 big game defeats on the bounce, life has been hard during that time & mental health is shot. This finished me!!

OK...OK...whatever Moore should have done is subjective. But what he SHOULDN"T have done, objectively, is, unfortunately, exactly what he did. But he did it and then they did what they did...gotta let it be and move on...

.Except for the other defender covering

You know what, couldn't even see that on the replay I watched 🙃 that said, it's still a great opportunity to get Sunderland stretched, Cannon 1v1 against a tired defender.

I'll bookmark your post and get back to it next season, you were one of the favourites to go back up automatically, then you were favourites to go up in the playoffs. Neither happened, it's a funny old game as they say.
It is mate but you seem to be selling your best players despite going up. Watson has gone, it seems like Bellingham is going to Germany and there are rumours around Hume, Rigg and Neil. You have to keep your best players and add to them if u r going to survive, we know that from experience.

We have a model of bringing in young talent, bringing them on and selling for profit. If nobody was interested in our squad, it would be viewed as failure, clearly the formula is working, otherwise we'd not have won promotion. Most Sunderland fans are aware of the model, thus players leaving isn't a shock, it's expected.

I've got trust in the current ownership, and believe we'll bring in some good signings this window, re staying up, yes it's going to be difficult, but our club is a different beast compared to the other two promoted clubs, as ever, I'll just wait and see how it pans out one game at a time and see where we are next year.

It’s arguably not such a different beast to Leeds, but that doesn’t really matter, as fans on Brentford and Bournemouth will happily tell you. All that matters is the quality of the 11 that are on the pitch at any given time, including added time. The size of your stadium and crowds will play very little part in it, it certainly won’t be in any way intimidating to PL opposition.

Before we broke the Wembley hoodoo by winning the pizza cup during lockdown, our record at Wembley was on par with yours, you'll conquer it eventually.

I know it's gut wrenching, I've been there before many times, I've thought about throwing in the towel numerous times in the past, as soon as it's only a week or so to the start of a new season, I've always buckled and got the season ticket, as a fan it's a balancing act between good and bad times, only thing I know for sure is, long after individual players/ managers have left, the fans will still be there, the mainstay of any club.

Having thought about it I’ve come to the obvious conclusion the PL didn’t want us going up. Ref gave goal, Lino didn’t flag, their players didn’t claim offside and went to take KO. They put ball on spot ready to KO and a shadowy figure pressed a button hotlines to the VAR team. Red light flashing a message went to ref. “You’ve made a mistake, go to the monitor and we’ll tell you what to say”.

Never forgiven us for Tevez embarrassment!

Sunderland in 6th didn’t deserve to get past coventry let alone us, it was manipulation by the illuminati but guaranteed they will be the darlings of the PL and pundits next season.
I think you’re on to something …

The ref clearly didn’t agree with the decision as he just stood arms folded … head down as the goal was disallowed.

Clearly didn’t agree with what he was told was happening
