Deano signed for 4th time

I know he's 47 now, but I reckon he'd do a lovely job at centre back. Or possibly a Beckenbauer-type sweeper role.

Seriously, I'm delighted that he's back involved with the club, and he'll have so much to pass onto the youngsters.

He should have had a much bigger playing role the third time he was back. All Colin had to was use him as regular back-up (last 30 minute sub most games, occasional start, etc) to Shipperley to guarantee promotion, even the title, a lot earlier than we did. Instead Mr W**k*r had to go and sign that crock of shite Akinshitebuy and play him instead of Shipps which so nearly cost us promotion. Of course owd Colin knows best, and he never did like having his (very large) nose put out of joint by a proper Blades legend. Two, sop to the fans, substitute appearances was a joke.

Deano = Blades legend, Colin = Mr... well you fill in the blanks.

While I completely agree that Shipps should have been first choice, I don't accept that his inclusion "nearly cost us promotion". Disappointing as that signing was, Akinbiyi left some good marks on the road to promotion – the sole goal in the win at Derby is one. No player that scores a crucial goal against Wednesday deserves a "crock of shite" label too in my book – and what a goal it was.

Totally disagree with that, the three absolute sitters he missed at the sty, that would have put to bed for good the BDM bollocks (and given a much fairer reflection on the score), in my book were unforgivable. If I'm not mistaken he made his home debut in the 4-1 defeat against Watford, the start of a run of 1 win in 7 (the worse run of that season) with Akinshitebuy up top instead of Shippers, that saw a 14 point lead over 3rd cut to about 2 points. Only rectified when Shipperley came back into the side, with Shitebuy in his rightful place on the bench.

I don't recall him being the cause of the defensive nightmare against Watford. I doubt the presence of HMS would have made much of a difference, or prevented Unsworth from being sent off.

Put him on the bench Saturday Atkins, bring him on in 88th minute when we win a corner and hey presto, its in!

(I remember the third time, when he had that header that didn't quite go in. If it had, the kop would have gone absolutely fking crazy.)

That would be a good first "project" to give him !
Would be great for him to get DCL playing in the same way he did. big lad who can play a bit and knows how to score - not a million miles away from a each other at the same age. DCL just needs to listen and learn.

I still can't forgive him for the goal for Leeds right in front of the Kop. Not the fact he scored it, but the way he ran the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of their fans. He certainly doesn't have the class of some former players when they've scored against us. Talk about rubbing our noses in it.

Deano's come home, I burst into tears....

Oh joy

I think he was better behaved when he scored for Leicester against us.

He could curl one down in the centre circle after scoring against us and he'd still be a legend to me.

While not wanting to diminish the achievement of scoring the first premier league goal, it really means scoring the first goal after England's top division changed its name.

Sky et al have a vested interest in citing "premier league records" instead of all-time top flight records, as it means that they get more new records to harp on about.

But to me it diminishes the achievements of some of the great players of the past.

I am too lazy to check, but I think that one of the reasons Deano did not play a bigger role was that after his cameo against Brighton he got injured and was basically out until the last game of the season.

As for the other signings, Akinbiyi coming in was defensible. Horsfield coming as well was not.

Neither of course were first choice. We weren't willing to pay Sam Hammam's £3.5m valuation of Cameron Jerome – that seemed to drag on, we apparently didn't go higher than £2.4m. Pity really, as he'd have been valuable for us both in the promotion run, and the fight against relegation the next year.

After we went up, I was told in the close season by someone at the club about three signings we were going to make that had not yet been announced - this is the only time I have ever been ITK re transfers. The three signings were to be Claude Davis, Li Tie, and Cameron Jerome. The last one never came off - a great shame.

I thought his behaviour was ill judged to say the least, though given that - unlike some other former players - he was booed whenever he touched the ball, and he copped a lot of abuse all afternoon, I can see why he did it.

But will he be able to slot in next to Collins as CH ? Interesting sideshow but still waiting for the main event - I do think he will wind up as Manager at some point though)

I wonder what other teams call what someone named bladey bladeyness.

Steve Bould Arsenal
Gary McAllister Liverpool
Ryan Giggs Man Utd
Ledley King Spurs

You would have thought we created this idea, the way some people go on.

As I recall, most blades were delighted when we signed Akinbiyi and Horsfield. After the sale of Gray, we mostly agreed that it was a big ask for an ageing Shipperly to play week in week out as the target man and as well as he was doing, many advocated giving him a rest. I think it was absolutely right to bring in another big man. And how often do we say we should sign the best performing players in our league? Akinbiyi had been banging them in for Burnley and was the signing most fans wanted. I agree he shouldn’t have automatically replaced HMS for a run of games but sometimes you need to persuade a big money signing like that to come with the promise of first team football and Warnock probably felt under pressure to justify his expenditure by playing him. For once, we were satisfied that we had used January to get the extra firepower in to get us over the line rather than the usual fire sale to kill our season (Deane & Fjortoft the most obvious example).

When it became clear it wasn’t working, Warnock acknowledged his mistake (uncharacteristic I know) and went back to playing Shipps. If you read his latest book he acknowledges this and apparently told Shipps he would be back in the team for the remainder of the season to try to reassure him of his faith in him. He said in his younger days, he would have felt he had to stick with Akinbiyi having paid so much for him but as he was older and more experienced, he felt more able to admit his mistake and go back to what had worked previously.

I thimk that most would agree that signing Akinbiyi, Horsfield, Deane and Dyer was perhaps overdoing it a bit though. I got the impression he had fallen out with Kabba during the season hence the Dyer signing.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I just cannot understand the vitriol from some fans towards Warnock. He gave us the tripe assault season, a double over the pigs, a promotion, had a hand in setting up the academy, signed favourites like Brown, Webber, Hulse, Morgs, Kabba, Ifill, Page, Unsworth, Kenny, Geary and brought the likes of Monty, Tonge, Jags etc through the youth system. Yes he had his faults but he was our best and most successful manager since Bassett.

I agree with most of that other than the bits on Akinbiyi/Horsfield. I think on Akinbiyi it was mostly positive, but there were a significant number that had reservations. I don't think people were too concerned about Horsfield, as it was viewed as a low-risk loan. His subsequent lacklustre performances, plus the revelation that we'd agreed a deal to sign him that we couldn't renege on, changed that.

Fair enough Loughboro, I wasn't on the forums at that time so couldn't gague wider reaction, just the people I spoke to etc. But that was my feeling at the time. I thoght either would have been fine to provide competition and cover for Shipps and whilst I thought signing both was a bit excessive, I was just pleased we were signing the depth we needed to "ensure" the push wasn't derailed.

I thought Deano was doing a good job at his club in Norway. Anyone know why he's back, pushed or jumped ?.

PRESS RELEASE (google translated)

Brian Deane signed in November 2012 a 2 year agreement with Sarpsborg 08 FF, which runs until December 2014.

We want with this press release informing that Sarpsborg 08 FF and Brian Deane jointly agreed that it does not extend the agreement after the season.

Brian Deane will continue to train and lead the team and we are now fully focused on the rest of the season.

I predicted to myself, before I even read a word, that the phrase "future manager" would feature here.

Deano, a legend to me as much as any of you, and one of the few proper footballers recruited by Dinosaur Dave, has done absolutely nothing, zero, nil, fuck all, to justify earmarking him as a future manager. Except, of course, playing with distinction for us and having a nickname that even our fans (not the most musically accomplished) can easily chant. Sadly, that's good enough for some...

Atkins OUT; Currie IN....

By the way, I'm perfectly happy for Deano to be back in his present role. He has a wealth of know-how to pass on. It doesn't begin, though, to qualify him to manage our club. Any contrary view is sentimental Bladey claptrap.

I believe Deano's 'injury' was similar to the one Collins picked up last season under Clough.

As I recall, most blades were delighted when we signed Akinbiyi...

I seem to remember most Blades were aghast at the signing, firstly because he was an awful footballer who struggled to control a football, and secondly for a fee pushing towards £2m, for a striker we'd agreed to sign the previous season for £650k.

Akinbiyi was a typical poor Colin 'target man' signing, following in the footsteps of Asaba, Ashley Ward and Andy Gray. He played them as leaders of the line but the ball never stuck, due in the main to them being not good enough in the air. For any team playing long ball, as first line of defence and to be effective as an attacking unit, it was always key the ball stuck. That was ultimately why we were unsuccessful with Asaba, Ward, Gray and Akinbiyi as leaders of the line and why we were so successful with Shippers there.

Oh I don't know, if Morgs can do it then Deano should be able to. No harm in trying – maybe wait till Adkins has got the promotion out of the way mind. Agana as his assistant too.

Rostron as defensive coach, with particular responsibility for zonal marking at set pieces?...
