1st goal:

We press high, but end up being very stretched. Wrexham play it long up to Moore. Tanganga wrestle with him, but Wrexham pick up the loose ball and make lots of forward runs. From this point we don't regain defensive control and we're vulnerable in the wide areas. McCallum not getting back to challenge Windass on the back post means the cross hits Bindon and goes in.

2nd goal:

Our corner marking is like this:

Zonal markers:
Arblaster: first post
O'Hare: edge of 6 yard box
Bindon and Bamford: centre of goal

Man markers:
McCallum, Riedewald, Seriki - they're part man markers, part there to prevent their big lads (4, 5, 19) to make leaps.
Tanganga marking Doyle

Moore (19) remains unmarked and gets to make a free header.

3rd goal:

Chong roams over to the right hand side as we're attacking, but Wrexham intercepts a pass from Arblaster to Hamer. Chong remains on the opposite side, but there is confusion who's going to fill in for him. It's first O'Hare, then Hamer, then both just seem to drop any responsibility and just watch Wrexham attack for a bit. It leads to the situation in the screenshot below, where Windass has time on the ball on the left.

As Chong is on the other side and O'Hare and Hamer takes a breather, Seriki has to push out to press their Windass. But then he leaves a gap behind him, and even worse, the defender normally next to him, Tanganga, is also awol. It leaves a gap that Arblaster could fill, but he decides to play the offside trap. Bindon, far away from the action in the middle is playing their runner onside though.

As the cross comes in, thankfully we have McCallum at the backpost, but rather than attacking the ball he seems to shape up to get under the ball to head it further away. This means he's not using his excellent leap, meaning Longman gets above him and scores.

4th goal:

At this stage we've switched to a 5-3-1-1 with Hamer, Arblaster and Soumare in midfield. The ball bubbles about in midfield and Soumare's attempt is blocked and Arblaster can only deflect it further into the path of Windass, who runs at our defence. Hamer was there, but his mindset is all attacking and he doesn't a) realise he's got to get on the right side of Windass being our deepest midfielder, or b) chase after him:

Like on the first goal, McCallum, too, doesn't seem to realise the danger, or he is too tired to make a real sprint. Tanganga tries his best, but we can't rely on him making those last ditch tackles every time, he needs help.

5th goal:

Wrexham's Doyle has the ball on the left and Hamer and Seriki fail to react to danger. Seriki is focusing on their LWB. Hamer decides to close his eyes when Broadhead makes a run in behind him. Broadhead plays in their LWB (Seriki couldn't keep up) who runs at Bindon and his tackle is judged as a foul by the ref.

We put Hamer in a less advanced role in an attempt to dictate play and affect the game more. We probably know it's risky. He really is a liability defensively. It may seem strange when he played in a holding role at Coventry, but his mentality now is all about creating and he hasn't got the engine to do both roles. It's not really about laziness.

Maybe a few less pies might help.

Excellent analysis! The defending on that corner was horrible. A free header is fair enough if a team has done some clever screening/blocking like on a few of ours recently, but I don't see that here at all. Just allowing their best header of the ball a free run and header 🙈

McCallum has been pretty good recently, but most of his better contributions are going forward and he remians a bit of a liability defensively. Some of that is being exposed by Hamer, but still feel a lot of his mistakes have been of his own making, brutally highlighted here.

Agreed. First goal Siriki is too far off his man as it goes wide. 'Stop the Cross' is a full back's primary directive in defence, and he didn't. Similarly to slack picking up of Wrexham's men as it flies past the six yard box is poor. Second, Tango ends up on the back post. I am not convinced either than Cooper couldn't have come for that cross. You have two and a half feet more on your height as a goalkeeper, even if you are punching it out of the box. And, as a goalie, you are protected by the officials. In a 50/50 with Moore, any contact and he gets the free kick. Third goal was totally on McCallum. His jump was good but he compressed his neck into his shoulders, Sander Berge style. Just a nick and that ball doesn't connect with their winger's head and end up in the net. The fourth is just academic poor tracking and defending and the fifth in truth should not have been a spot kick but we were done by then.

A comedy of errors

McCallum was a disgrace on their fourth goal. The second of the three photos shows clearly that both he and Tanganga had a head start on Moore but McCallum had an advantage over Tanganga in that he was out wide and therefore looking across the line and could see Moore whereas Tanganga was preoccupied with the Wrexham player in possession of the ball. McCallum had nobody else to worry about and all his effort should have been focused solely on Moore. He ought to have been busting a gut to get across to Moore and deal with him but instead he did no such thing, pathetically allowing Moore (who is no speedster) to run past him. Having done that, McCallum then unforgivably eased off running and as the final picture shows he was a distant spectator as Moore evaded Tanganga’s despairing lunge to score. Not to put too fine a point on it, he gave up.

McCallum also played a big part in Wrexham’s second goal (slack pass straight to an opponent leading directly to the corner from which they scored) and their third (unaccountably failed to head away the cross from the left despite being the long odds-on favourite to do so). Despite some decent - decent, not great - performances this season, he’s not good enough as a defender and doesn’t warrant persevering with.

Be interesting to see how Hecky and his players take on the tactical approach to Wrexham on Monday.

McCallum & Seriki are not natural defenders , nor have they applied themselves to learning the art of defending.
They've been watching Bogle , another attacking winger who couldn't position himself to defend to save his life.
We are completely bereft at RB and not much better off at LB.
This fancy "wingback" role is all well & good but the feckers need to be capable of defending.
In January we need to go out and get 2 fullbacks - one each flank - who love defending , tackling wingers , stopping crosses etc.
No need for WBs if we're 442 or 4231.

If we like M & S , we need to move them forward and dump Ogbene , Chong & Hamer like we've dumped the kid from Villa.

Seriki is a far better RW than anyone else in the squad and I'm a better LW than Tubby Hamer , but McCallum would be better still.

M & S are both desperate to attack and effective at it
If we lose them , they will become good WBs or even better wingers.

McCallum had even been switched to a LCB at the time which makes it a little bit worse. I think he's done well this season, but he does have strange moments of looking lethargic.

Not many wing backs make good wingers but!plenty of wingers do well as wing backs.. Its the way they receive the ball , wing backs get plenty of players retreating so going forward is easier ,wingers have to attack from static positions mostly which is more difficult.

I get it - but my main concern ATM is stopping opposition wide men from having the freedom of the park and the ability to put in crosses unchallenged
