To be fair to Walker, he's only about 48 hours late on breaking this! ;)

David Weir poised for job as Sheffield United boss

Former Scotland captain David Weir is on the brink of becoming the new manager of Sheffield United.
BBC Radio Sheffield understands that a deal is being finalised between the League One club and the 43-year-old.
Weir was recently interviewed for the manager's job at Everton, where he has been a reserve team coach, before they appointed Roberto Martinez.

The Scot had been close to signing for the Blades as a player after leaving Rangers in January 2012.

He trained under then manager Danny Wilson as the defender was keen to extend his playing career.

Instead, he returned to former club Everton to take up a coaching role, although he initially continued to play for the reserves at Goodison.
Now, with fellow Scotsman David Moyes having moved to Manchester United, Weir is poised to make his own first move into management with the Blades.

United, who missed out on promotion after defeat in the play-offs, had been looking for a new manager after Wilson's departure in April .
They failed in attempts to attract Central Coast Mariners coach Graham Arnold, who was subsequently critical of the club , and Motherwell's Stuart McCall to the post .

Port Vale coach Robert Page and former Portsmouth, Blackpool and Blackburn Rovers manager Michael Appleton were also linked with the vacancy.

Falkirk-born Weir, who won 69 caps for Scotland, began his career with his local club before moving to Hearts, Everton then Rangers.

IF this happens I don't see how, anyone can be disappointed. He's played at the highest level for the majority of a very long career, consequently has connections at the top of the game and was so highly regarded by the man now entrusted to manage the countries most successful side, that he recommended him as his potential replacement.

Personally I prefer him to most of the 'established' managers, who fail at one club only to appear at the helm of another six months later? Put alongside the other suggested managerial novices his pedigree is clear to see. Furthermore he played into his 40's, which requires some self discipline, determination and professional pride, qualities I'd like to see instilled at The Lane.

Anyway standby for some last minute Tsunami or fax related cock up that means it won't happen!

Why are people saying it's a 'cheap' appointment ? Are they disappointed because we're not paying compo to anyone ? I suspect he'll be the highest paid manager in the division bar Wolves.

I think this could actually be a good appointment.

It'll be interesting to see what his backroom staff would be. I've seen the suggestion that he might give a role to Unsworth given their past together at Everton. I'd be surprised if Morgan is kept on at this stage.

I'm thinking exactly the opposite and that some sort of role for CM has been part of the deal. Even if he goes back to reserve/kids/"general" coaching.

Having bigged Chris up less than two months ago, cutting him adrift now will not be something in KM's thinking, nor indeed will be the severance pay.

However, if you're right, whilst I'd be genuinely sorry to see the last of "ours" leaving the club, it would signify the talked about new pragmatism and determination to get things right might not all be hot air.

The only problem we have now is, if he does well and another club come in for him....

Well that would be an unexpected novelty. I can only think of three (arguably four) occasions since 1990 that our managers have been approached for other jobs:
- Kendall by Everton in 1997
- Possibly Bruce by Huddersfield in 1999, though as I recall we lost the appeal on him being tapped up
- Warnock by Pompey in 2005
- Speed by Wales in 2010

Of those, I think the only one I would have been disappointed in their departure would have been NW. Kendall & Bruce had ultimately disappointed, and Speed hadn't had the best of starts. I can't remember the last manager that left because they were genuinely doing really well in their job here.

If Weir joins, as happy as I will be I'll also be fearful he'd be off to a bigger club at the first sign of success. Interesting to find out who is number 2 will be. Neville or Stubbs anyone?

Neville would be good, as would Stubbs, Morgan back to coaching role?

Bring on Tucker!!

Don't be a pillock Bartman, it is fairly common knowledge the players mentioned are on more than £2.5k pw and you know that very well as does anyone who takes the slightest interest in Sheffield Utd.

It's you being the 'pillock' MB. The 'common knowledge' you talk about are people who think they know but they are really just guessing to suit their own agendas...just as you are. These are the people who normally cliam theyh are ITK on football forums and are very rarely correct. I have not seen ANY official source stating what income these players are on. They may not even be in out top five wage earners. The point is none of us know.(however,if the new manager picks any of them,I am sure you will be one of the first to come on here and critisise)

So I ask again,if it is common knowledge what these players are earning ,it must be common knowledge what the other players are earning as well and you should be able to quote your source. Or are you just guessing/assuming ?

I would be happy with Weir as the young, up and coming manager. Experienced player and has worked with Moyes, who really changed "small" Everton to be a solid club in the Premiership. And the big plus, he has no connection to the club nor the pigs!!!
He was here on a non contract basis for 5 mins or so under Wilson.

Good things come to those who wait /quote]

It seems to be taking a long time, but I suppose these days you have to have two sets of lawyers going over the contract.

Unlike the "good old days":

Chairman: "Na then. Does tha' want t'job?"

Applicant: "Aye".

(handshake)

Job done.

United manager departures:

1952: Davison: left to manage Chesterfield!
1955: Freeman: died
1958: Mercer - left to manage Villa
1968: Harris kicked upstairs
1969 Rowely: sacked
1973: Harris: kicked upstairs
1975: Furphy: sacked
1977: Sirrel: sacked
1981: Haslam: kicked upstairs
1981: Peters resigned and never managed again
1986: Porterfield sacked
1988: McEwan - resigned - jumped before he was pushed
1995: Bassett: "mutual consent" - jumped before he was pushed
1997: Kendall: left for Everton
1998: Spackman: resigned with no job to go to
1999: Bruce: left for Huddersfield
1999: Heath resigned wiyh no job to go to
2007: Warnock: sacked
2008: Robson: effectively sacked
2010: Blackwell sacked
2010: Speed: left to manage Wales
2011: Adams: sacked
2013: Wilson: sacked.

So only Mercer, Kendall and Speed (and possibly Bruce) left United to better themselves...

You could argue that Nigel Spackman also "left United to better" himself. It's conceivable that being unemployed is preferable to managing SUFC.

Where have I seen that mouth before....

Exactly a lot seem to believe we sacked Neil when we got relegated. That was never the case and he was harping on about a new contract for most of the season in the PL. He gets offered one and turns it down.

His choice not ours.

What actually happened was that Warnock could have moved to Premiership Portsmouth and trebled his wages.
He decided to stay because as a Blades fan he wanted to finish the job and lead us into the Premiership.
Most manager's would have left for the better offer at that point but for some reason Warnock gets stick from certain Blades fans for talking to Portsmouth and then agreeing to stay anyway.

Warnock had an understanding with McCabe after the Portsmouth offer, that if he got us promoted he would then be "looked after" with a new contract.
When he did get us promoted, McCabe reneged on that and only took up the option of extending his existing contract by a single year on similar money to his Championship contract.

Towards the end of the season, probably when we were doing well, Warnock was offered a new two year contract which he rejected "because it wasn't what he was looking for" (I.e. We were probably still not coming close to the Premiership contract he had been offered elsewhere).

He did however, say "we agreed to put it to one side until the end of the season. I said to Kevin McCabe [the club's plc chairman] we should get together after the final game. I expect to see him late next week. It's never been a massive issue for us."

According to Warnock, this old interview was rehashed by The Yorkshire Post in the lead up to the Wigan match and gave the impression that he was thinking more about his contract than the match, even though he specifically said it had been put to one side until the end of the season.

When we went down, it seems McCabe and Warnock mutually agreed that the time had come for him to leave.
At that point, McCabe offered Bryan Robson a 3 year contract on (one would assume) considerably higher wages than he had previously been willing to offer to Warnock.
Just to rub salt in the wounds, McCabe later made a laughable comment along the lines of "Robson has done more for the club in a few weeks than Warnock ever did."
This after Warnock had trebled our average attendance, helped to fund the Academy, reached two Cup Semi Finals, one play off final and one promotion.
Then people wonder why Warnock is a tad resentful towards McCabe.
