Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, but good to hear Collins will get a chance to prove himself

http://m.thestar.co.uk/sport/sheff-utd/collins-set-for-chance-as-adkins-wipes-slate-clean-1-7294616

I'm sure this is true but Adkins himself doesn't seem to have said anything at all specific about Collins (I presume they're just extrapolating from “Everyone will be given a chance”) so that article looks suspiciously like a dig at Clough.

And how many managers would come into a club and say "all the players are rubbish, I won't even bother checking"? So the actual content of that article is "new manager is starting his job".

I think this is a good opportunity to move on if we can bring better in... I would suspect Collins is one of our higher earners also?

“If there is unity across the whole club, between the footballing side and the fans, then we have a greater chance of achieving what we all want. Which is success for this football club.

“I'm very excited to be here.”

He's making all the right noises - hope it works for all of us.

Many better CBs out there than Collins who's contributed to us 'enjoying' 5 years in this division. Time to move him on, we need to look for better.

Why 'enjoying' with the little ears? I've thoroughly enjoyed seeing the likes of Fleetwood, Yeovil and Hartlepool turn us over at the Lane over the last few seasons.

We need to do better than Collins if we want to move forward. He was better than what we were left with at the end of the season but that does not mean we don't need to improve. If Doyle has been moved on then so should Collins really.

Finances might dictate he has to stay, but agree totally with your post.

He was part of the problem that got us relegated and part of the problem that kept us in this division.

No place for sentiment at United now.

He wasn't part of the problem with us staying in the division. Our defence was rock solid at that point, our issues were with scoring.

Everyone at the club deserves a chance. Stop looking for things to complain about, let the new manager make his decisions.

He's a bit of a puzzle really.

His partnership with Harry (which I give equal plaudits to) was outstanding. And the number of clean sheets we had with him tells its own story.

But, he was poor early last season (though not deserving of the treatment he got).

If, and it's a big if, he gets an able defensive partner, he should be kept on. In my opinion, he's an immeasurably better defender than Jay McEveley.

True, it does seem like people need something to moan about these days.

We need 2 new center backs that is pure fact i hope Adkins has been made aware of this

I would imagine that being a former goal keeper himself, NA is acutely aware that the keeper needs to have 100% confidence in the two men in front of him, as he himself said a few days ago "you build from the back, out". f NA and his assistants are not already watching as much of last season's footage as possible, to see the weak spots, I would be very surprised.

Last of the Championship wage earners but I assume he has extended his contract at some point on a lower wage?

Time to move on, but overall has been a good servant. Favourite moment being the equalizer bullet header at scunny when we only had 9 men.

<< Sheffield United defender Neill Collins has agreed a new two-year deal, with the option of an extra 12 months.
The 29-year-old has made 69 league appearances for the Blades sincejoining from Yorkshire rivals Leeds in January 2011.
He told BBC Radio Sheffield: "I'm very pleased that it's all done and dusted because I was keen to get it sorted.
"I just want to improve as a player and help the club get out of this division and consolidate in the Championship."
He added: "It feels good to be playing in a team that is winning games and keeping clean sheets but we won't rest on our laurels.
"I enjoy working with the management team and the club itself is great to be at." >>

As far as I'm aware this is the last time he signed a contract. In November 2012.
So including the extra 12 months his contract is due to expire in November 2015 presumably?

First out of the club for me. Lot of fuss over a very average footballer.

True but he was the only fit senior centre half on the books at the end of the season yet wasn't played. Would he really have been a worse option in the play offs then Alcock?

Agree that his time at the Lane is probably up.

Collins signed in Jan 2011 on a 2.5 year deal, taking him to June 2013. The article you quote is about a 2 year extension which would have taken him to the end of June 2015. The optional extra year is next season but given that he wasn't on the released list, I can only assume that it was another one of those masterstrokes where the option lies with the player (the Higginbotham clause).

I regret to disagree with you mate. Keeping Collins ( who I felt fairly sure was out of contract ) would be an acceptance of mediocrity.

What we need ( before season starts and not at the end of January ) is two dominant CHs, at least one with a bit of pace, ideally who are also comfortable on the ball and can be a goal threat from our corners / free kicks whilst actually being able to defend the opposition's corners / free kicks.

He may not have been a great centre half and I don't think anybody's suggesting that, but at least he's a centre half by trade. As you say, better than Alcock and McEvely as well, who always seems to be seconds away from a monumental cock-up.

Collins has been a good servant to the club but it is time for him to move on, it just shows how bad our defence is that he is the best central defender we have. We can and must do much better than rely on an ageing player who never had any pace when he was at his peak. We need two new centre backs with strength and pace as a minimum.

Rock Solid defence?

We have problems all over the pitch, including defence. Collins has been poor to average since he came - Maguire helped to make Collins better and the defence better, but Cloughs assertion that Collins was part of the problem was to some of us spot on. In the 2-3 years Maguire and Collins played together we were not strong with balls into the box.

We scored bucket loads of Goals during the ched years - but we are still in the same division.

Collins has always been a problem, but we have also had problems in others areas of the team as well.

If he gets a chance under Adkins then fair enough, depends whether he as a defender can get better - at his age I doubt it, but good luck to him if that is what happens.

As for a complaint - it's not a complaint - for me, and for others it's a FACT - and that's an opinion. I trust you have yours.

To me any issue about Collins getting back in the first team last season (for the run in and play-offs) was purely and simply about having no alternative apart from Magahey. Its a new regime, a new transfer window and a new season. I can see no merit or justification (despite FFP) in the club not resolving what has now been acknowledged by virtually everybody as the biggest weakness and failure of last season - Centre Halves. I can't see Collins being first choice in a month of Sundays - if he is god help us. His wages won't be cheap so if he isn't going to feature he needs to be moved on to free up some FFP space. Same goes for Higdon. Collins and Higdon are probably at the more expensive end of the scale.

What about Doyle? He was released before Adkins took over. Does he get a chance to prove himself too?

I suppose it's good news, Adkins will hopefully bring the best out of Collins. When Collins played well, it made a huge difference to the strength of our defence.

Are we really going into this season on a wave if optimism, aiming for automatic promotion, and hoping Collins gets a regular start?

We need to move forward not yearn to a (if we view his SUFC career as a whole) considerably average history.

For all the furore regarding centre backs, Collins was dropped for a reason last season. As well as he did alongside Maguire (and I suspect they both did well for each other), as others have said, we need to look ahead not back. For those with memories going back further than a few seasons, he was possibly the biggest scapegoat in our relegation season.
