Collins

The season before last when the ball was passed along the back four I used to wince when it reached him. He was like a rabbit caught in headlights.

And a new contract. And a coaching job. For life.

Just a minute. He's been here a few years. He's a very basic centre-back with a very basic nickname ["Collo", but he'll always be "Colls" to me]. He's been loyal. We now have little or no use for him as a player. There is no reason to think that he has any aptitude at all for coaching.

Why on earth would that entitle him to a coaching job for life?

The mind boggles....it really does....

We needed Collins last season but Clough didn't use him and simply payed the price.
Atkins may not need him if he buys well in the transfer window, but he has done the right thing in saying he will give him/ other players a clean slate.

I think Collins and Butler were harshly treated last season and we will never know what difference it would have made in the end if they played. Collins in my view was decent at this level for the last few yrs, yes alongside Harry but still part of a good defence.

But that's in the past now, and I would hope we can buy a better centre half than Collins between now and the start of the season.

Have a like from me for being one of the first people if not the first on this forum for calling the new manager Atkins instead of Adkins.:)

Oh right ....... I fear I may just get it wrong a few more times next season  but thanks for the like ;)

A 3 page thread for this? My guess is Adkins knows pretty well what he wants already. This is based on a "Everyone will get a chance" comment. Talk about reading as much as you can into a throw away line. If he starts its because Adkins thinks he is good enough. As he is the manager thats good enough for me. If not then I won't lose any sleep either.

True but he was the only fit senior centre half on the books at the end of the season yet wasn't played. Would he really have been a worse option in the play offs then Alcock?

Agree that his time at the Lane is probably up.

Collins signed in Jan 2011 on a 2.5 year deal, taking him to June 2013. The article you quote is about a 2 year extension which would have taken him to the end of June 2015. The optional extra year is next season but given that he wasn't on the released list, I can only assume that it was another one of those masterstrokes where the option lies with the player (the Higginbotham clause).
Although I was a Clough supporter it has disappointed me to realise how foolish or if you like stubborn he was regarding Collins he would have strengthened the back four without doubt and although I felt he was not a player Clough wanted to keep his experience in the playoffs would have been useful.it shows that Clough was happy to spend another season in this turgid league and that is unaceptabklelllllll

Sorry about the missing- spelling some how I sent it by mistake ex

Collins was (or should have been) right for us last season due to a failure to acquire a decent CB or two to replace Harry. Assuming new Nige gets us two or three new CBs this summer I see no reason for him to stay. I'm all for being loyal to players but there has to be a cut off. Him and Harry complemented each other and had a successful partnership. Last season him alongside Tel might have worked well, who knows? But we have to opportunity now to get some new younger CBs, hopefully with some pace. Got to thank him for the three years up to last season (as in the championship he was pap) but I reckon it's time for him to move on.
