In what has already been a busy January on the transfer front, boss Nigel Clough gives a full update on possible comings and goings before the end of the month.

Clough began his pre-match press conference, ahead of Saturday's clash with Bradford City, by discussing possible additions to the playing staff and utilising his squad.

The Gaffer remarked: "We are down the road with two or three options, hopefully we can get one done in time for Bradford and then we will pick things back up ahead of the FA Cup.

"We have got the likes of Elliott (Whitehouse) and Terry (Kennedy) in and around the matchday squad and they are the sort of players that need to be included. Shaun (Miller) is also in contention, so ideally we would like to add another defender, a midfielder and a striker, but they have to be able to come in and start games.

"We brought in Billy (Paynter) because we are in a battle at the wrong end of the table and he is a physical presence.

"Aidy (White) is another player we are continuing to monitor, he is expected to be fit before the end of the month, so we'll see what happens with him."

On the departure of Febian Brandy and the possibility of another player leaving the club, Clough added: "Febian needs games and he hasn't featured much since getting sent off at Shrewsbury Town in November.

"Jamie (Murphy), Ryan (Flynn) and Conor (Coady) have all grasped their opportunities of late, so it is pointless keeping Febian sat around on the bench.

"Florent (Cuvelier) has trained with Port Vale for a couple of days and there is a good chance he will move out on-loan for the rest of the season.

"We have found it difficult to integrate Florent, given the consistent form of Conor, so again we want him to get out to play regular football."

This is the most positive part for me:

so ideally we would like to add another defender, a midfielder and a striker, but they have to be able to come in and start games.

"We brought in Billy (Paynter) because we are in a battle at the wrong end of the table and he is a physical presence.

Clearly not looking to sign dross and only players who will come straight in and command a first team place and also recognises that we are in the shit and need some guts and steel to get out of it and that's what he is looking for!

all sounds fair enough to me

It sounds fair enough, but let's be clear that by players "grabbing their chances", he means"Contributed to our upturn in form by grabbing a mere 16 points room the last 12 matches".

We were shit before with a few shit options. Now we're just shit. Having said that, a quarter decent center forward, if Paynter proves to be, should steer us to safety.

Im a little concerned we maybe binging White back
He didnt impress me at all. I hope the players he has his eyes on are substantially better than White otherwise we maybe in trouble

I would welcome White back. I've seen him play before he joined us on loan and he does the potential to be a good player. Also I like my full backs to attack with a little pace, just what I personally like to see.

A left back, midfielder and striker would be great. Would prefer permanent signings but as long as they're good and ready to give it their all I will take what we can get!

What kind of midfielder is he after, if he's "happy with Flynn, Murphy, Baxter and Coady providing the flair"? Maybe Lappin?

Well many of us have said we need a defender, midfielder and striker that will go straight in to the team and Clough has openly said that is what he is looking for.

Sounds good to me and lets hope it happens.

Well I'm sorry but I'm yet to be convinced about Cloughs judgement when it comes to players and what's more, our supposed new financial clout.

If we are looking to the future, why weren't we in for Nahki Wells a young player, but one with a proven goal scoring record. Perhaps he wouldn't have come, but surely we could have made an enquiry and could comfortably afford a fee of 1.3 million? At least a bid would have shown some ambition.

Why haven't we got players in now? It's all very well saying January's not over, but there's 12 points available in January and we've dropped 6 of them already. Surely the negotiations that are ongoing now, should have been done in December, with a view to getting players in as soon as the window opened? Why are we sending players out on loan, before getting replacements signed? Why not agree loan deals and then complete them when Cloughs got his players in?

Why is Chris Porter still playing, when he clearly doesn't have the physical prescence, the touch, vision or instinct to warrant inclusion in what is arguably the most influential position in the side. In my opinion, our lack of a goalscoring threat is the biggest single factor behind the current mess we find ourselves in and I'd expect a decent manager to have seen that and had it sorted on 1st January!

Who's to say we weren't in for Wells? That said I don't think he'd have looked twice at us to be honest, he's played against us remember and knows just how shit we are.

God knows who's on the list but we can't afford to incorporate any more plodders into the team. We need some presence and some athleticism.

It's just our luck, that and the curse of the manager of the month award.

Yes, I know NC was only nominated for December and the Brentford manager won it but those footballing gods appear to have blue and white knackers

[qagree,"Bob Havenhand, post: 559752, member: 5521"]I thought the 11-minute Audioboo interview was an excellent interview once again from Mr Clough, could fault him, his attitude, or what he said.[/quote]
I agree, clearly dismissed stead as a possibility cos he doesn't want a striker in the same mould as paynter n porter. Think he'll sign someone with a bit of pace...ant a clue who like! I got the impression that he's addressing the weakness though. Porter gone this summer too I reckon

There's a simple answer to your questions. You might not like it, and you pick holes in it, but it's quite simple. It's called FFP.

its all well & good saying we should go after this player & that player.

Id be willing to bet that 90% the players in this league and the championship wouldnt want to come for a relegation scrap. and those that will are journeymen & cloggers.
Cloughs job is to try & actually find someone who will come in on loan, improve the squad & not just sit about knowing hes going back to his parent club anyway at the end of the season.

Aye, that's part of the reason for loans I'd guess. We can sell a promotion push in the summer. In january we can only sell struggle and risk.

We will have the same problem PL teams have with the JTW in that players that you want will be over priced as clubs know you are desperate for a new player. You pay over the odds for the player you really want or just get someone on loan who might be able to do the job.

Lappin wants regular football, which he may not be able to offer.

Also, he would of course have done wonders for the confidence of those mentioned if he'd have said "I want a midfielder with flair, because I don't think Flynn, Murphy, Baxter and Coady offer us anything in that respect" :)

Out of interest (genuine question), what stops the Prince investing now whatever he was going to invest in the summer?

Assuming any investment has to be something that increases turnover (either now or in the summer), then why not now?

I accept FFP affects what we can do right now. I'm less convinced they couldn't do anything about it, if they wanted to.

Those expecting a few exciting signings before the end of this transfer window will be in for a disappointment I'm afraid. All this talk about major investment is all bluster. This has been going on for years, remember when we were going to invaded by exciting new talent from Argentina ?. That died a death after the signing of Sabella who I wouldn't have really classed as a hit at the Lane. The Argentinian connection was raised again many years later with talk of Rattin scouting players for us, result ?, nothing (I don't really count a duff full back who had a few nightmare games).

Move forward to the Premiership and Warnocks signings in the vital JTW of players for the future.
The generally uninspiring loan signings of recent seasons assisting in relegating us to our present position.

  1. And now to the present and having just listened to Nigel's interview on RS, oh dear. Flair players, Murphy, Flynn, Coady ?. The only player we had with any pace has now left the club for this season, alright it could be argued that he hadn't really been a success, but at least he gave the opposition defenders something to think about. We now revert back to our snails pace attacking moves. Cloughy acknowledges that we could do with strengthening in defence so what name gets mentioned as a possible target, our old friend Ady White who was a roaring success first time around.

We won't get the players in who will comfortably move us away from the bottom end of the table, it will be edge of seats time come the end of the season as to whether we will stay up.

I like Cloughy but I am a bit baffled with some of his decisions and comments that he makes. What is all this assessing in the Summer business, assessing for what ?, a promotion push for the Championship or players to get us back into League One.

Sorry for the rant but these transfer window disappointments get to you after a while and I see no different this time.

FFP isn't just a one way conversation. At one point this season we were paying the full wages of

Williams
Taylor
King
Lappin
White
Brandy
Cuvellier (soon to be leaving)
McGinty

I probably might have missed one, however at a low estimate you could be looking at about £15k a week in wages between them. Unless I am missing something simple, we were complying with FFP when they were here so why are we unable to spend those wages now?

I'm hoping that "making an assessment in the summer" includes waiting to see which of those out of contract players that he wants to stay will stay, and which of those aren't out of contract that he doesn't want, he can get rid of.

He shouldn't over-commit now but I do hope he brings in two or three good 'uns for now

We are but would you want to give Nosworthy ten grand a week? No thought not. Clough has said he is looking for players to improve the team that may take a bit of time.

Fact is, the players shipped out have failed. They failed under Weir and obviously Clough has seen enough to realise that, for one reason or another. They are simply not 'good enough'
Or the money could be better spent elsewhere.

I'm guessing we've missed out on a few targets in already...a relegation battle not bring the most exiting reason for a player to move in the JTW

Re:'the Prince' and money.
I actually think he's 'thr real deal'
Baxter, Cuvellier, Taylor cost a fair bit ( for L1) We were buying absolutely no one before 'the Prince' came on the scene.

Another point is the so-called 'young un's', Ironside, Whitehouse, Kennedy ..what role if any do these lads have at the club under Clough?

Tough times.

UTB!

That decision is simple. ditch the fucking lot of them.
