I am too slightly, although skeptical about his ability to replicate his form, if he was Hecky's top choice it's a bit of a blow.

Won't stay gutted for long if we end up with Archer and Doyle, with at least one of them a permanent.

On Friday the reports say a deal has been agreed with Lens, so he’s going there.
So 2 days later someone (probably Boro) say a deal has been accepted from both Lens and Ajax.
is the normal process to just accept the highest bid and announce it…..anyway thought the deal was sorted on Friday….he’s going to Lens.

Also by saying Boro have accepted a bid for 10 million from BOTH Ajax and Lens is telling Sheff Utd
just increase your bid a little to 10 million and we’ll accept your bid too.

As I said there could be some game playing/smoke and mirrors going on by Boro trying to squeeze out the last drop increasing the transfer price.

This all comes down to who has the ear of Akpom and his agent.
Akpom might be settled in the north and have already decided he prefers to stay in the UK and fulfil his dream of playing in the PL.

They've probably agreed around 12m and we're unwilling to go beyond 10m - that'd be my guess

But as said, if he's Hecky's top target we should be willing to spend 12m

Especially as worries about resale value are also overblown - if he keeps playing at last seasons level he's worth 10m+ in 2 years time as well

On the other, 10m, 12m etc it's money you are effectively writing off.

Get in someone like Archer and his upside is huge.

I didn't think it was fair that so many cast him as a one season wonder. But you do question why he only did it once when he's 28 soon.

Was it Carrick, his tactics, the others around him that just clicked?

It feels a bit like he had a Michael Brown like season where everything he hits goes in. Browny was an excellent player for us, but he wasn't the same scorer before or after that triple assault season.

Just get the feeling the stars aligned once but perhaps won't do again in the same manner.

For that reason, this might be a blessing in disguise IF we can get Archer or similar.

While he had an outstanding season last year I can't say I am particularly gutted we haven't spunked a big chunk on him. Always felt like a gamble to me. Granted most transfers in that 8-10 million are now. It I would rather spend that one someone who will potentially go for that or more if we were stuck in the championship

I was keen for Akpom. Big, strong, mobile and was good at linking the play at the top of the pitch. All attributes we're crying out for.
The idea of him and Archer, the best double act at the Lane last season, was an exciting one.
I don't think we'll find better at that price point.
