Last game of the 1988-89 promotion season, lost 2-0. Dave Bassett decided that our 2nd sub should be Graham Benstead because we were 3 points ahead of Port Vale but our GD were about 12 goals better so he wanted to make sure we dont concede too many goals if Simon Tracey got injured during the match.
Was Mervyn Day our keeper during one end of season game?

Played in last game of 91/92 season against Wimbledon that we lost 3-0. At Selhurst Park.

We went in fancy dress in Bermuda shorts and Hawaiian shirts!! It was bloody freezing!! Sat in a shaded side stand.
Got locked out of a lads flat that was supposed to be letting us stay that night and slept partly in the corridor and partly in the car!
Shit all round and seam to recall so was Mr. Day. Never played for us again!

Hello from a Bristol City fan in peace.

Ahead of our forthcoming game I’m putting together the opening post for our forum’s (One Team in Bristol, https://www.otib.co.uk/?_fromLogin=1) match thread, which will be posted the day before the match.

I would like to include some perspectives from your fans so if anybody would like to share info please do, anything would be appreciated, fans thoughts about the game, players who have represented both clubs, tales from when we’ve met previously, a fans view on your season, etc, etc.

Look forward to receiving info and to a great game.
There’s two teams in Bristol.

jerseybean , there'll be a lot more comments in the game thread itself. If you look at the top of General Blades Chat, it will be pinned at the top.
So currently the Preston one is there. The Bristol one will get put on before the game, that will give you more material.

Bristol City at home, Sept 70 , was my very first game at BDTBL (3-3)

We were 3-0 down , pulled back to 3-3 and went on to gain promotion to the old first division - and one of our best ever eras was about to start .

Welcome to BL

Saved a John Fashanu penalty though!

Bless you
I anticipated some form of response from ‘Your Excellency’ 😉 albeit perhaps not quite so comprehensive!
Not read it (all) yet although the photos would appear to confirm my ale addled recollections?!? - itself a momentous occasion / achievement for myself !!!!!!
Cheers, as always

The Ashton Gate game this season was comfortably the best game of the season for mine. Those emotions are why you go to away games midweek, just in case something like that happens.

I thought the home fans we spoke to pre-game were a little bit ahead of themselves in terms of season optimism, bordering on arrogant, but I suppose they hadn’t lost at home until that point, so you can’t criticise fan hope and passion, I suppose.

An absolute belter and unless something magic happens before the end of the season, that game will be the main reason I will always remember that shirt

So you didn’t go to the Lane for the first time until you were well into adulthood? Why was that?
As they say - everyone has a story

I was born in 1946 - my mother was a chimney sweeps daughter and she had me out of wedlock - I have never met my father . I wasn’t what you would call a handsome little mite - infact I suppose I was considered vile of appearance, I was kept-away from society and was brought up in a cave on North Landing at Flamborough .

I performed my own cosmetic surgery over the years and was rehabilitated into society in 1966 . I met my current wife around then ( she was the senior foot measurement technician at Dollmans at the time ) and we bought a house in Clifton Park .

Her father was a chap called Earnest Blindfold who manufactured corner flags , he took me into his business and we won a contract to supply said products to all football clubs beginning with S .

In September 1970 my father in law and I were delivering a batch of corner flags to Swallownest miners welfare when we met a man called Silent John who invited us to meet a number of players who were having pre match dinner at his mothers house . We went , we did a deal with John Tudor , John Harris and John Barnwell to supply a life long supply of corner flag to SUFC , we cut the Silent one in at 30% - at his insistence.

To celebrate the deal we were taken , blindfolded , on the back of a pushbike , to BDTBL to watch Utd v Bristol City - which is where this story begins .

To this day we still supply the corner flags to SUFC - and the Silent one still takes a cut

You did ask

Most memorable player for Bristol City for me is John Atyeo, from late 1950s to early 1960s. We had the best centre-half in England, Joe Shaw, (the England selectors did not share our view), but one of the few centre-forwards he struggled against was Atyeo. Joe Shaw was unusually small for a centre-half, but read the game superbly. Atyeo’s height and intelligence always caused him problems. They had some good battles, and Atyeo probably won. Not many centre-forwards did that.

Second best team to come to the lane this season after Leeds. Played some good stuff.

Got to be one of our biggest bogey sides at the lane.
They wernt a bogey side tonight they played us off the pitch ! We have been getting over the line ! Just ! Tonight we didn't make it and really a draw was the best we could hope for! But yet again we nearly got over the line ! Is that how we want to play ? .so boring to watch !
I'll take it if we get there ! Somehow that seems a long way off . 90 minutes of torcher watching that.
Derby on Sunday and I have a ticket ! Another 90 mins of he'll cus that's what it is and has been most of this season. Even though we have won plenty.
Come on Wilder it's purgatory watching us playing like we are ! We surely can do better than what we dished out tonight .
Frustrated blade ! and I bet there are plenty more! Can we do it playing like this ? I hope so but I doubt it.!!!
