I'm working on an online survey with a colleague at Staffordshire University on fans' views towards the lack of black managers or coaches in professional football. Chris Powell and Paul Ince are the only two black managers out of 92 involved in either the Premier or Football League. It would be great to hear your thoughts on this. The address is: http://www.topfan.co.uk - it will only take you 2 minutes (8 questions). Thanks in advance.

I think all the black managers are hiding in the general sport section ...... where this post should be.

Wot d fook has this talk of blacks got t do wi United? Fecking tow hat academic. Get this fooker moved.

slightly off topic, is there a "ism" for hating other football clubs?
fanatasism maybe :)
is it racism or just a lack of talented black managers and coaches?
or even a lack of intrest from said groups?
Racism includes other nationalities and considering only 1 of top 6 mangers in prem league is english, is that a form of racism by clubs?
pretty sure no asian or middle eastern managers or coaches, so should these groups be added to your survey?
Women, gay, vertically challenged, disabled?
why single out black managers?
the list of possible minorities is endless

thanks Kenilworth....and of course Blades strikers who score goals?

Until you mentioned it, I couldn't think of a single Black manager. Mainly because its an irrelevant point. I can name you a load of good managers and a load of crap ones, colour never comes into it though

Chris Hughton got sacked from Newcastle ..... woz it becoz e iz black???!!

The 2001 census and 2007 estimate reckon that the percentage of England's population that is black to be from 2.2% to 2.8% http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demography_of_England

So given that there are 4.58% and 5.7% of the population that are Asian whey aren't there any Asian managers?

If between 2.2% and 2.8% of the population is black, then 2 black managers for 92 clubs is in line with the population. So what's the point of the study?

Sorry, not sufficiently impressed with the questions in the survey so won't be bothering.

Black footballers are a far higher percentage in the industry than the wider population. So the question is why aren't managers in line? It's a fair question, even if I think the survey questions aren't up to scratch.

He's got to have something to justify not working for 4 years and getting pissed every night

There was still relatively few black players who came through until the mid to late 1980's, so prehaps there is still not the depth of available black manager over the age of 50.

There will be more black managers coming through in the years ahead, but its important not to over-promote based on the colour of the skin. The two black players who stand out to me as making decent black managers if they choose that route are Clarke Carlisle, and Rio Ferdinand who has seemed to grow up and mature a lot over the last few years. On the flip side if someone wants to appoint someone like Jermaine Pennant as a manager then they will be making a huge mistake.

It the same with Black Football pundits. I personally can't stand Garth Crooks and Mark Bright who i think are boring, awful broadcasters, but like people like Damien Johnson who talks a very good game, and Chris Kamara who despite being completely bonkers always has a decent opinion.

If you looking for taboo's in football the only one that still exists now is homosexuality, and when a player or manager finally comes out of the closet, then that will challenge and change peoples perceptions. There is quite a few footballers and managers who are rumoured to be gay but until someone actually comes out it will remain a taboo.

erm brownie, the fashanu geezer came out as gay like a hundred years ago well 80's actually, incedently he was black and gay and he was an international at the time i believe.

Times have changed though. If a really big footballing name came out now - a class, respected player, then things will be different (I hope).

Fashanu was before my time, but I suspect society would have been less sympathetic to his suffering. But now, it's football that's behind the times. Beckham has paved the way by being the first metrosexual. Time for the first successful homosexual...

Didn't work out too well for him though did it?

Justin Fashanu never got near the England team, and his career was most definitely on the skids when he came out. The treatment he got from his fellow professionals, Brian Clough and his brother, was disgusting.

Very interesting thread, we have Andy Preece as our manager at Northwich Vics (ex Bury manager), we had the late great Keith Alexander as our Manager prior to him going to Lincoln City and Dino Marmia (number two at Stevenage now) was our Manager prior to Andy Preece. The other week Andy was being interviewed at the ground prior to a home game for a Radio 5 programme on Black Managers due to air I think in March (the 30th springs to mind).

"dat speaks Yorkshire me owd spadge"

Bert has never heard the term "spadge" before and the "dat" bit belongs in Brixton. Come to think of it Bert has never ever heard a Sheffielder pronounce the word fucker as "fooker".

The written word is best done with the Queen's English.
