Bet Wilder's fuming

I do think there are worrying signs about our new signings. A £40m budget provided an opportunity to strengthen the team significantly. I don’t think we have.

Got to be thankful we didn't spend £130m+ just to stand still like Villa then.

He did say just that, but that kind of contradicts his squad strategy, whereby he has always maintained he has a reserve in place for every position and those in the first team are continually being pushed by the shadow squad.

If he’s now saying that his second string isn’t pushing then is that not an admittance that they’re not good enough?
No, i think its a very smart way of motivating those not in the first team that may think they are good enough that they need to do more to convince him.

He didn't say that they weren't good enough, he said words to the effect that they didn't show their ability during the Sunderland game.

Let's face it it's a competition that needs putting to sleep
I'd disagree. I actually find it the most interesting as the lack of interest in it from the very top teams give us a good mix of team from the quarters onwards.
It's also all done and dusted by the end of February so doesn't distract from the league matches at a critical point of the season.
That's why I'm slightly disappointed that we don't take it a little bit more seriously as it's a good chance to get to a final without negatively impacting on our overall season.
Here's hoping for semi finalists from Everton, Watford, Wolves, Villa, Leicester and Southampton as that would make a decent few matches for me as a neutral as well as making an enjoyable final that all the relevant fans would actually value winning.

I've just heard his post match and interview and he didn't sound like he was fuming or even that bothered.

He did say that no one who played today really went out to grab his attention, so it doesn't look any of them will be in the teamsheet any time soon.

The only players he mentioned as doing alright were Besic and the forwards
the forwards lol

Hopefully some people will start to realise how good ,Norwood ,McGoldrick and Basham are instead of hammering them.

Never had you down as a rampant blind optimist before.

Lose to Liverpool and all of the above plus usual scapegoat Lunny, will be in for a hammering on here.

Training game, simple as. Gives CWAK a chance to assess progress in a 90 minuter against a fairly credible team who want summat out of this season, if only a decent LC run.

Anyone who posits a cup run is better than next season and subsequent seasons in the PL needs their fucking bumps felt. The rewards for the club, squad and fans are there to be seen.

Without looking, how many of you can name the last five domestic cup winners? What about runners up?

What's said in public and what's said in the dressing room are sometimes two totally different things........my understanding is that contrary to popular opinion.....Tufty was indeed furious after last night's game.

L. Freeman is better than Duffy (sorry. But you've just got to accept that)
Mousett/mcburnie and Robinson are better than mcgoldrick, sharp and any other striker we have on the books. Sorry to say that but it's a fact.
agree with all that and not at all sorry.

those 4 account for nearly all the outlay and have made a significant difference to our chances this season

Let's be honest, how many first team spots are 'up for grabs' right now.?
Forget the defence and keeper, they are cast in stone, and totally bullet proof.
Norwood and Lunny also just now. The strikers haven't yet nailed down their spots, although I think McGoldrick would be first choice if fit, and McBurnie would probably be the other shoe in.
So, two spots currently not nailed down in my opinion. And then we have a game that Chris, the club, and the fans are evidently not bothered about, with a completely new team, and only two spots available for Saturday. Those conditions are not going to inspire anyone, it is very difficult to produce the required intensity levels in that situation. Truth is, no matter how well Morrison played, for example, he was never ever going to start against Liverpool. This was true of most of the team midweek.
Having a great 2nd 'team' is not essential, but having individuals capable of stepping in when needed is paramount. We have several of them who can step in seamlessly. I would also argue that the 10 new signings have raised the levels of the existing players, so just because they aren't playing yet, doesn't mean they are a waste of money.

It’s not a fact, it’s an opinion
Sorry but I’ve still got to see that Mcburnie and Robinson are better Mousset yes Freeman yes but Robinson n Mcburnie disappointing .... so far, but I’m not worried as it will come
Only player who’s ever been an instant hit under Wilder and remained so is Norwood
All the others have needed time to nurture into the philosophy

We're only playing three games in October and three in November, I don't see why so many people are relieved to be out of the League Cup.

I can believe that - Wilder doesn't strike me as the sort of man who'd accept losing any game.

You just need to look at Lunny, he wasn't that great to start, now, arguably been our best player so far???

7 players who started last night were signed in the summer. Jeez doesn't look good.
Meh, five of the side that lost to Barnet were also signed by Wilder that season. I'm sure he's not happy with how they played but we've seen multiple times in the last 9 months alone that if you make 10-11 changes you generally play like absolute crap.
Wilder will probably be just as chuffed as me that we are out of the cup competition with no injury worries; fans were bleating about missing out on the possibility of FA cup glory after the Barnet defeat and our season redeemed itself somehow to leave most of our fans pretty satisfied. John Lunstram played in that match and most of our fans would have been willing to let him go on a free transfer after that humiliating defeat. Now I guess they'll be thinking maybe his valuation alone covers a fair chunk of the fees paid for new signings figuring in the team against Sunderland. Funny owd game.........

His team selection might have said otherwise?
Nope. Those were established professional footballers, most of whom had spent almost their entire careers higher than our League One opposition. Excluding this season:

Moore - 9 season as a pro: 4 at L1, 5 at Champ
Freeman - 8 season: 5 L1, 3 Champ
Jagielka - 19 seasons: 6 Champ, 13 PL
Stearman - 15 seasons: 1 L1, 11 Champ, 3 PL
Bryan - 1 season at L1
Osborn - 6 seasons at Champ
Besic - 4 seasons - 1 Hungarian top flight, 1 PL, 2 Champ (missed half of 15/16 and the whole of 16/17 with injury)
Morrison - all over the place but never lower than the Champ in England
Freeman - 4 L1, 4 Champ
Musset - 3 PL
Robinson - 4 Champ

That side should have enough about them to beat Sunderland: the only players to have spent any significant time below the top two tiers of English football were the two Freemans and Moore. Was Wilder prioritising the cup? Of course not. Did he pick a side he thought could - and arguably should - win the game? Definitely. Would he be pissed off at the defeat and its manner? Absolutely.

Since when has Mr Wilder been bothered about cups ? It's always been about promotions and team building.

You just want cup runs but no promotions, get Clough back.........

I don't think Chris Wilder is fuming. I think he would have preferred to win to give the squad players some more minutes. But he used it as a friendly to try a few things. Ravel was moved from position to position throughout even centre centre-half at one bit, Mo Besic was moved around. So I don't think Chris Wilder will be that bothered or else he would have left the teams shape. I think what I saw was that I would be worried if Enda Stevens got injured as Osborn is no where near. Also Jags doesn't push up and overlap so no Bash cover.

"Just play the L1 Champions eleven forever more" is the moral of the story
