He hasn't progressed hugely whilst with us, he's contributed but is a long way from irreplaceable.

It seems like the rest of the football world agrees with this, as no one significant came in for him, and going to Burnley isn't progress.

Let's hope we spend the money wisely. We must have plenty of it now.

Burnley
Fucking Burnley

We have less ambition and less kudos and much less money than Burnley.

Burnley
Fucking Burnley.

The statement the club has put out is piss poor, lacking in class and will only serve to put players off joining us.

Would you want to sign for us knowing that at some point down the line we could throw you under the bus like this?
How many more times are you going to beat the Prince with a stick?

Berge wasnt worth the fee we paid for him and arent you grateful that we got £15M for him?

Could turn that round and say how many times are you going to beat Berge with a stick?

Did he run over your cat or summat 🤣

Seemed a genuinely nice guy that could be brilliant at times on the day (but never quite consistently so). Shame to see him leave as he looked pretty good during preseason and also vs. City in the FA cup, but if he was never going to renew his contract then the angle of viewing it as 'would we have paid £12m+ for a 1 year loan for him?' helps. Anyway good luck to Sander and I'll need to change my profile pic! All about the reinvestment now.

To be fair, Burnley are a much more exciting proposition. More ambition, more spending power & a better manager that has an exciting career ahead of him.
Yes, he could of aimed higher up the table but he’ll more get more game time at Burnley and probably flourish.
If the fee is 15 million, then let’s get someone in to replace him asap. He’s defo not a world beater by any means

The owners are borrowing a lot of money and paying overpriced players like Wolves owners did a few years ago. Burnley could end up like Wolves in a few years time

Controversial though it might be, maybe there is a view that is neither ‘the board is wank’ or ‘Sander is a snake’. I don’t see a villain in this drama and don’t know why everyone nowadays has to desperately label someone as some kind of Uber-cunt in any transfer or other moment of contention. Was Sander wrong for saying he would see out the contract he had signed in good faith then seek employment elsewhere (probably to his huge financial/career benefit). No. Not at all. So was the club wrong for seeing this very likely outcome and instead acting so that we received some financial recompense for a large previous outlay that could be reinvested. No. Not at all. I know it is the least fashionable of concept in all walks of life to suggest such a thing in 2023, but just perhaps there is nuance and everyone had a point and (shock horror) no one was a cunt.

Just a suggestion.

Think it's no longer an issue Berge leaving . Paying 12m is a nice proof of intent from the club ..and more to come

Roll on saturday

And yes we are spending the money

Whatever the true fee for Berge is, for a player that is so one footed, can't tackle, can't head a ball and lacks pace and aggression, we've done well to get at least something for him.
And I bet his family will be over the moon when they find out what a shitole Burnley is.

I'm so confused by what has apparently happened here and what princey said in that interview the other day.

He likes to have players get down to their final year in the their contract as he believes they 'play harder' to gain a new contract. But then if the player decides they want to leave on a bosman, then they get frozen out of the team?? Seems a bit counterintuitive to me

Ultimately he is / was an asset of the club.

Due to his reluctance to commit to us the “write down” of said asset was £15m over a 12 month period.

Spurs (with Kane) and PSG (with Mbappe) find themselves in similar territory albeit for much bigger figures and with much higher profile players.

But fundamentally it’s the same. SUFC HAD to be accepting of this potential write down for Berge in the same way Dan Levy has to be with the c£100m on the table for Harry. Extra significance being if Harry wants to go to Manchester and ends up there as a free agent. Relght kick in the nuts for Spuds that would be 😂😂😂😂.

Spurs' £100m minimum for Kane is clearly Berge's £15m. Every player has their price, rightly or wrongly.

Yes that’s right. And what Spuds are currently saying is that we are happy to write down £100m for Kane to secure his services for a further 12 months.

With these sort of numbers (and probs more for Mbappe) it’s a dangerous game these clubs are playing.

Which, given our perilous financial situation, leads to the conclusion we couldn’t write down £15m for any of our players over 12 months. Including Sander.

Sadly, the club had little choice. It’s a shame but that’s the world we live in.

Of course we couldn't. We'd take £10m for Egan if someone offered it.

What id really like to know is what are the club doing to secure the likes of Egan, Baldock and any others deemed integral to the future to secure contracts beyond what we currently have ?

As I suspect would the gaffer based on his recent comments !!

I will still stand by my comment on his day he was a good player and even say a great player however "his day" didn't happen enough. If he stayed fit which is always a concern (not any longer) he went missing even on his good games for long spells. If he was a consistent 7/10 then fair enough but he really wasnt. In the Championship having 1 good 7/10 in 4 games. He missed 32 games through injury in 3 seasons (not including Covid) at an average of nearly 11 a season it limits playing options if that continues and 2 operations too already. Glad we cashed in and moved on

"I think it's a good move. They play a type of football that suits him well."

"He'll cope well. They are promoted team, he'll be one of the main players."
I doubt very much he'll be one of their main players. Solbakken can't even work out how to use him for Norway with the limited options there.

It will be interesting how Kompany uses him. He's not the player a lot of their fans might think he is.

Fwiw, I think Souza is much more in line with what we will need. We look defensively quite robust now. Going the other way might be another thing, but aside from left wing back questions while Norrington-Davies is out we look big, strong and aggressive.

We paid €25m which at the time worked out at £22m. As transfer fees are amortised over the length of the contract Berge's registration had an accounting book value of just under £5m (£22m*12/54). On that, an incoming of £15m plus bonuses means a P&L profit of £10m. Additionally, I'd be amazed if we'd not paid Genk the full fee so there's a £15m+ cashflow benefit.

As for Berge himself... thought he had ambition. I've been disappointed with United for selling players in the past but this is the first occasion I can think of where I'm disappointed with the player for his choice.

He's Norwegian
Turns out money was the reason
He's fucked over his mates next season
He's Sander Berge

He's Norwegian
Said Kompany was the reason
But he'll be back in the Champ next season
He's Sander Berge
It's the first bit that intrigued me. We agreed a €25m deal. I just don't recall if that was it or whether the detail might have been something like €20m rising to €25m. Don't suppose we'll ever know.
