Surely effective football is whatever style gets the results to get you where you want to be? E.g. Promoted, Final of a cup?

I would love to watch smooth, passing football... But not at the expense of our ultimate goal.

Warnock may have left us in the same league as he found us but he also took us higher than we had ever been in the previous 10 years.

Remember that game at WBA vividly. It was a real surprise to see us beat them so well - Deane and Agana absolutely terrorised them, Roberts had a great game... and I even had to admit that John Gannon had played well!!!

Unfortunately yes, some hads very low opinions of him but he ended up getting picked for Wales whilst with us and was part of a team that scored bundles of goals a quarter of which he assisted,
He could appear invisible occasionally , but who doesnt , but in general he did more positive than negative and his goal at Forest is still one of the best 3 Ive ever seen by a blade

That goal (and that win) at Forest was extraordinary.

Didn't Gannon play for RoI??

The Bassett era was truely remarkable given what was achieved with so little funding so to insist it was all hoof and ale house football definitely proves that one didn't attend matches. Yes there were times when the limitations of the squad resulted in a dour struggle but there was plenty of times when a match was littered with good incisive play and plenty of ability. The goalmouth action created was exciting and we scored shed loads of goals.

I recall going to West Brom first game back in Div 2 (now Champ) - their team was expected to be right up there and we were seen as the upstarts, the council tenants, the canon fodder of the league. What happened? In between bouts of resolute and stout defending we tore them apart with Deane and Agana ripping their back four a new one.
The locals were really miffed that day and nobody gave us any credit for the 3-0 drubbing the lads dished out. I, for one, was buzzing. Took a Villa supporting mate to the game and he was very impressed with the performance.

That season ended with the 5-2 at Leicester.

Nobody can pour scorn on that side and the collective efforts of the players and staff with any shred of credibility. Their togetherness, strength of mind and strength of character was unrivalled that season (and the next having gone til almost Christmas without a win). What everyone else, especially the opposition at the time, continued to do was to underestimate the ability of the individuals in that squad when they worked as a team on the pitch.

After years of absolute shite under several managers that team instilled a lot of pride back in this club and I'll tell you what. I reckon the good level of crowds we see today for third division rubbish are a direct consequence of the Bassett era.

Tell you what I'm looking forward to 'Adkins boys 25 year reunion' in ermmm 25 years, got it in my diary already

Righto, who's going? What ugly mugs do I need to look out for?

I can't believe fans who slag Bassett off I was age 11 when we got relegated to the 3rd in May 88. The next 5 years were absolutely awesome times to be a Blade, I also argue with anyone who says Warnock was a better manager than Bassett for us, factually Bassett was far more successful with far less resource.

Pinchy change the record and at least give DB some credit, you're clearly in a minority here.

I'll leave you with the comment Big Stan gave the collective media on Goals on Sunday 6th May 1990.

I'm sure the club will get around to honouring Porterfield's 4th Division Champions eventually. Give them chance!

They already did, in 2007.

He also left us at a different end of that same league.

Anyone who thinks that he left us in as poor a state as when he arrived is in need of some serious medical help.

I remember us starting that promotion season as the hot tip to go down. I remember the following season, the Arsenal and Spurs fans at my school ripping it out of me every Monday that we'd got beat again. I remember beating Forest 3-2 and the noise sounding like Concorde taking off. I remember us going on that incredible run of results and the kids who'd had a dig shutting the fuck up. And I remember us winning at QPR and staying up.

The next two seasons were as good (91/92 was arguably better. Finished 8th and beat the grunters twice).

Great days to support this club. Week in, week out, shoving people's predictions down their throats and showing how far a bit of bottle could get you. To young kids who supported them at the time, they were a real inspiration. Even at age 35, I love each and every one of those blokes.

We're the same age and I'm in total agreement. I saw Mark Todd when I dropped my lad off at school a couple of weeks ago and he seemed very willing to stop for a chat. A very affable character and he'll be there on Saturday. Parting ways, I had all on not to lean in for a bit of a cuddle.

I'm just slightly younger so don't remember all of Bassett's boys that well but remember from about 90 onwards. Deane, Whitehouse, Kelly, Agana, Littlejohn, Ward, Bradders, Gayle, Tracey, Beesley, Blake, Carr etc. Fond memories.

The big question is after an early kick off, who will be mullered by the time the event starts?

I reckon WalthamstowBlade will be wearing his tie as a ninja headband by 8:30

am or pm?

It's going to be exceptionally messy and I'm not looking forward to seeing the family for lunch on Sunday with a bastard of a hangover.

Semi Enjoyable evening. Good to see the players and Bassett who gave funny speech closing it by stressing the importance of winning above entertaining. Given the lack of boos at that point i'm guessing Pinchy wasn't in the room. :)

A couple of things marred the event though. Maybe it's just my London ways, but i didn't think cracking jokes about trans people referring to Sam Hashimi was particularly funny, nor necessary.

The 'comedian' they hired was funny for about three minutes, then descended into tired jokes, ending joking about domestic violence, gay people, and rape. Top stuff

Echo that. It was a good day bar the football, the pale rider in the fat cat was fantastic, and it was good to see the old squad again, even if they dragged 2 hours worth of material over about 5 hours.

Dave Bassett speech was a sweary masterpiece, and that comedian was about as funny as wanking with a handful of wasps.

Thought the comic was a right bum note. All that time could have been spent listening to the players say summat. Otherwise meeting those blokes was just incredible.

100% agree - it was shocking to see this at an official function.
