Balance of Power

Under Bassett it is arguable that the calibre of a lot of our players was second or third division, and yet we remained in the top tier for four seasons. Obviously Bassett had great motivational qualities, but (and I know memories can be rose tinted sometimes) I don't recall us (the supporters) being anything like so negative. We expected to win the derby games even though an impartial observer would say that Wednesday had a far better team. And at home, we thought we could beat anyone.

Indeed. As I mentioned in my previous post (#33).

Incidentally, re: the thread title... exactly what kind of 'power' are we supposed to be wielding as the least-unsuccessful club in Sheffield?

You finished that post by saying: "Conclusion? It doesn't matter if your fans think you're going to win a match or not, it's down to the quality of the players and the manager.

Who would have thought it?"

I would argue that the attitude and nervousness (or confidence) of supporters can have an effect. They are not the only factor, but they are a factor and it is true that the nervousness and sense of impending doom at Bramall lane, particularly at crucial games, is almost palpable. And I'm sure it is also felt by the players and does sometimes affect performances.

You were arguing it's all down to the quality of the players. If that was the case, the Bassett sides would have never got above halfway in the second tier.

...said I.

But I think supporters can and do influence managerial decisions and player attitudes during games. Sometimes players, managers and supportres feed off each other. Some managers interact with the supporters and try and get them animated. Why? Because they believe that supporter attitude can affect player performance.

I tried all last week but was dismissed ('But we obviously have a new class of super fan in Sitwell who cannot for the life of him work out why anyone would or could be negative. I just wish I held a level of blindness that let me keep forgetting the facts of the matter and replacing them with kittens and nice music.') by some of our 'fans' as an idiot. Ho hum

Thats stuck with you hasn't it?

Where I work the owner of the company is always talking the company up, you would think we were a multi national company, instead of a mid size transport company based in Leeds only: However it does no harm as we get contracts that perhaps we would never have got it we had portrayed ourselves as what we really are. That happens with the Swine herd the big themselves up, to be this massive club, Megson bigs them up as being massive and the best in the city, and they believe it. However what happens as has happened with where I work, it starts to come true, it become a self fulfilling prophecy. On the other hand, at United I have always think we talk ourselves down, we are waiting for the next fall, as it has happened to us many times before. It becomes a mind set, and the cycle we are in now is allowing them to make there prophecy come true. We need to believe in what we say, UNITED ARE BY FAR THE BEST FOOTBALL CLUB IN SHEFFIELD. Keep saying and preaching it, and they will soon go back in there place, if we look negative we become negative.

Funny isn't it, that the managers of the actual best football clubs are always playing down their chances and saying they're not the best.

What I don't understand though is what all their supposed positivity was doing for the swine while we were in the Premiership, while we were in the semi finals of two cup competitions, and while their keeper was picking the ball out the back of the net for the 14th time at Alfreton.

aah it's the fans fault. blame it on them then.. but this isn't a case of chicken or egg.. the cart here is firmly before the horse.. it is up to the team to inspire the fans first.. so SAF says anyway and he seems to know what he is on about :D

Perhaps it helped prevent them sinking even lower down the leagues, and perhaps their keeper might have had to pick the ball out of the net 20 times against Alfreton.:)

In reality, I don't think they are much more positive than us. The Wednesday supporters that I know have been well aware of their team's shortcomings over the last decade, and also complain of the general moaning and negative criticism emanating from their stands on match days.

wednesday have to play away games between now and xmas so well move well clear

the sheen of invincibility theyd covered themselves with beating yeovil and exeters looks to have been rubbed off by a mid table side away
4 away defeats for the owls 1 for us

we will go above them on saturday

dont forget when an owls fan tells you how massive they are remind them under megson in 2011 theyve won 4 away games all year and none at any of the competing clubs
