Sidney Street in 1911 re East Londoners.

Why on earth would east Londoners think Churchill was a poor Prime Minister based on a shootout that occurred while he was Home Secretary between the cops and some Latvian revolutionaries?

The majority of the electorate in 1945 voted for Atlee. It was a landslide defeat for Churchill

No, Attlee got 47.7% of the vote. Plus, Churchill was re-elected in 1951.

The Tories got around 1% less votes that Labour in 1951, but still came out winners due to the vagaries of the electoral system,. In terms of popular vote, Churchill lost all three elections he stood in as party leader.

You can't resist can you Walthy?
Bloody politics here in Blades chat. All we are missing now is the obligatory chuffing graph....

As a point of history, families of those who died at Gallipoli would be better off blaming those who incompetently executed a reasonably soundly conceived (by Churchill) scheme, and Taffs angered by Churchill's actions as Home Secretary might leave that to one side when evaluating him as Home Secretary. Alex Ferguson was a crap player, that wouldn't factor into my estimation of him as a manager.

I'm baffled as to why east Londoners particularly should have a problem with old Winston.

Completely agree regarding Gallipoli. That is one where you blame the manager not the board.

I don't agree that modern day Blades would not choose 1897-1902 as the club's high point.

It's a nonsense to suggest any other period gets close. League Champions, Cup Winners, Cup runners-up and very close to joining that elite set of clubs that have done the double. All organised by a master tactician who was years ahead of his time (if you get a chance read his book) and resplendent with magnificent moustache.

It's a sobering fact that our peak ended 13 years after the club's foundation. It's all been downhill in the subsequent 114 years :-(

That's my reason too.

In the 80's we were on a financial level with small clubs and hardly spent anything and our crowds weren't that great even by div 3 and div 2 levels. In recent years we've been the biggest spenders in league 1, always the bookies favourites for promotion with great home and away support. We have a great stadium and our support is the envy of most Championship clubs.

That is not true.

In every single season that we were in the 3rd division in the 1980s our average home attendance exceeded the average attendance of the division above (ie the 2nd division):

1979-80 United average 16584, division 2 average 13230.
1880-1 United average 12772, division 2 average 11202.
1982-3 United average 11764, division 2 average 10768.
1983-4 United average 12881, division 2 average 11601.

In the 1981-2 fourth division season we averaged 14892 when the division 2 average was only 10282.

Whilst in the second division seasons we only once averaged fewer than the average for that division (and not by very much). That was in the 1987-8 season. United average - 10207, division two average 10557.

In all the other 1980s second division seasons our average attendance was higher than that for the division as a whole, and in three out of the four seasons it was quite a lot higher:

1984-5 United average 12055, division 2 average 8725.
1985-6 United average 10798, division 2 average 7688.
1986-7 United average 9992, division 2 average 9022.
1989-90 United average 16584, division 2 average 13230.

the 81 team would batter this lot. yes they went down but at least they seemed to give a shit half the time

'myth of the blitz' .. actually i think most of the dissatisfaction was the lack of adequate shelters.. ie Londoners weren't 'allowed' to go in the tube at first.. so they all started buying cheap tickets and staying there.. the government were firmly against it. i think they stormed the Savoy Hotel or something. there was a program about it once

1897-1902. I think most Blades would say the same.
Oh I see, thought you meant you thought another era was better. Look at the link below. Ernest Needham (both as a player or captain), the 1897-1902 era not even in the top 5 and John Harris wasnt even in the top two. Even NW thought Harris deserved more votes and Bassett agreed. That is why I always thought there were too many flaws in polls

.

The East London Dockers werent happy in having to dip the cranes at Churchill's funeral

1 - I doubt it was because of Sidney Street.

2 - It doesn't follow that east London is a hotbed of Churchill hatred. You could probably have found folk who didn't like him all over. Germany, for one.
Churchill was totally right about warning the parliament about the rise of Nazis. He was a good war time PM but not half as good in peace time

So in 89 years no lower than 12th in what is now the championship.
Now in the 38 years since at least 14 have have been below 12 in that division.
I'm sure Darren will know the exact number.
This is without doubt the shittiest period in our history and can someone tell me who is presiding over it?

It most certainly is and arguably we've more so called 'backing ' than at any other time?

Whatever the outcome we are definitely at a low point, there seems a big cloud of gloom over BDTBL On matchdays

I was only 11 when we got relegated to the 4th division and although I avidly supported United at the time, I rarely went to matches. What is striking from the team that played Walsall is how many players remained the following season. In my memory, we had had a bigger clear-out than that. I remember us signing John McAlle who I recall was a flop, Keith Waugh, and then later Keith Edwards and even later Colin Morris. I was once in Sheffield WHSmith reading Martin Peters' autobiography. He said that he had expected to get more support from Harry Haslam. He also said that his kids got a lot of stick at school from Wendy fans. He said that relegation wasn't the saddest thing during his time here, that was the death of teenage goalkeeper Keith Solomon from Cornwall.

McAlle wasnt really a flop. He was signed by Derby midway though the 1981-82 season. Derby were two divisions above us

Good point, but compare and contrast with the team we put out last night and the team that played v Walsall in May 81

Conroy - Long

Casey - Brayford
MacPhail - Edgar
Houston - Basham
Garner - McEveley

Ryan - Campbell-Ryce
Trusson - Reed
Matthews - Baxter
Tibbott - Hammond

Hatton - Adams
Givens - Calvert-Lewin

I would say it's a close run thing...

But, take that relegation team and add in a bit of class like Edwards and Morris and it makes all the difference. That's all we needed this season, 3 or 4 quality players but yet again, we failed to bring them in.
