After defeating the side sitting at the foot of the Championship, the Blades faced the league leaders, Coventry, at Bramall Lane on Wednesday evening. United faced a very different opponent and challenge as the league leaders showed why they look set to return to the topflight; after a long absence from the Premier League stretching back 25 years to 2021. United were the better side for large spells of the contest and should have been ahead at the break. They finally do take the lead thanks to Harrison Burrows’ deflected strike but did not hold the advantage for long, as goals from Haji Wright and Jack Rudoni turned the contest on its head. Like with the game against fellow highflyers Middlesbrough two weeks ago, United showed several outstanding qualities and showed that without such a poor start they would be much higher in the table. However, the same defensive vulnerabilities and a lack of conviction in the final third, meant a ruthless Coventry side exposed these weaknesses. United’s slim playoff hopes are almost certainly over now and will probably start to think about planning for next season; after giving themselves too much to do in order to catch up.
Wilder made one change with Soumare in for the suspended Phillips. Riedewald was back in the bench after a spell out through injury. Coventry came to the Lane with a chance to go 5 points clear at the top after arresting a recent slide, to continue their excellent season. The Blades’ American owners were in the ground as the game started under the Bramall Lane lights.
United began impressively and were moving the ball around crisply. Brooks was looking a genuine threat with his strong running and Soumare began the game well with some powerful runs. The first chance came when the ball was transferred down to the left side and Hamer drove inwards, but his low cross shot was turned around the post by Rushworth with Bamford waiting to pounce. United won two early corners although after one was cleared, Tanganga and Mason Clark became locked together and had to be separated leading to a yellow card for both players. United continued to look the better side with some neat and tidy passing and movement from the forward players that was penning Coventry back. Rushworth had to save a low drive from Burrows and then Hamer nearly played in Bamford again.
However, despite the domination on 20 minutes, Coventry created a good chance as there was a swift break down the right and Wright flicked cleverly to Rudoni whose cross was intercepted. Wright then outmuscled Bindon to move into space but could not find the final finish. United had played all the football and controlled possession but these two moments showed the threats the Sky Blues possessed. The best chance of the game came for the hosts. Peck played a slide rule pass into the path of Bamford but after the striker cleverly found space and jinked inside, his low shot was tame and straight at the keeper.
At the other end, Coventry again broke down the right-hand side and the ball across seemed set to be converted by Wright but Seriki did well to turn it behind and deny a certain goal. United came again and O’Hare, who was getting the treatment from the visiting fans, flicked not far wide. There was then a series of shots with Soumare blazing over and then having a shot blocked. Brooks also had an effort that was cut out before he weaved into the box, after exchanging passes with Peck but ran out of room. There was an appeal for a penalty on Seriki as he went into the box with the defender definitely making a pull on his arm but the referee decided the full back went down too easily and waved play on. The official had given a bizarre performance thus far with several other decisions seemingly going against the home side and was loudly booed as he exited the pitch at half time.
The second half began with United continuing where they left off and they took the lead on 48 minutes. It was another incisive passing move and Hamer then found the pass into BURROWS, who rolled his foot over the ball to create space and with his weaker right foot, hit an effort that flicked a defender and went into the net. It was a fully deserved lead for the Blades.
Brooks then went on a marauding run but was denied by Rushworth low down to his right but soon after the visitors were level. The ball was played into the middle and United were caught short in this area. It eventually found WRIGHT who exchanged touches with Mason Clark, before coming inside and hitting a low shot through bodies that went in despite Cooper getting a touch. The keeper and his defenders will be disappointed at the ease of the leveller.
Suddenly City smelt blood and they completed the turnaround on 57 minutes. This time the ball was played down the left and Mason Clark was given too much time and whipped a cross in, that flicked off Soumare and RUDONI was completely unmarked and headed past Cooper into the bottom corner.
United made changes to try and get back into the game with Campbell and Riedewald on for O’Hare and Soumare and Torp and Eccles also came on for the visitors. The game had completely swung, and the Blades were struggling to find any forward momentum. Coventry were in a set defence and the Blades had to rely on long shots from Hamer who went wide and over on successive efforts. Cooper had to save a low shot from Rudoni that went through a crowd at the other end.
Campbell made a run forward and went down under a challenge from Thomas but the referee again deemed the United player went down too early – this time he booked the Blades forward despite his remonstrations. Coventry were now trying everything to slow things down and keeper Rushworth went down to receive treatment for an ‘injury’ as Lampard gave further instructions. Hoever and Chong came on as United tried to find something to get a leveller and the former was involved down the right. A few crosses came in but Coventry made blocks and clearances, as they had done all night and despite 6 minutes of stoppage time, they were able to see the game out.
United – Really frustrating night. I was kind of ok with the Boro game even though we lost, as we played well but they were just a bit better. Tonight, I thought Coventry were not as good as Boro and for all the first half and early part of second half, we dominated and had lots of good moments. We should have been 2 or 3 goals up but the only caveat is we did not have many clear chances or test the keeper much. We got into great areas and played some lovely stuff but the final bits (ball/shot) just took too long and meant we overplayed or got blocked. Coventry did defend well and threw bodies in the way and did the things we could not do 2nd half. I am not sure the Seriki one was enough for a penalty being honest. There is contact but would have been soft. That is how I see it.
It was a really good performance though and with more clinical play we go in a few goals to the good. They did have chances but were quite direct and the balls over the top/down the sides were their main threat – they also had a lot of long throws into the box. I was pleased with how we had done though and felt we had looked better than them for most of the game. This continued 2nd half and we got the goal we deserved. I wanted us to push on or take the sting out, but we did neither.
They kind of upped the tempo – the goal was awful from our point of view though. A ball over the top saw us have no-one in the middle (Peck and Soumare had done well – but went missing) - it ended up with Wright getting it wide left and then was given too much time. He exchanged passes but then Seriki should not show him inside at all. We do not get across and block the shot and Cooper should do better. So, there is culpability across the team really. Same with the second. Ball goes wide too easily, Peck does not pressure the ball (not sure why he is there as Wilder said?) and then the cross comes in and despite the flick, our centre halves are nowhere near Rudoni – who is proven at winning and scoring goals like this. Really basic stuff and showed our soft underbelly. Felt we had to work hard to get any chances/moments, despite our good play. They made and scored their goals too easily.
It kind of flattened us after this and despite changes, they sat in a low block, and we were taking too many touches – not moving it fast enough and relied on long range shots. We huffed and puffed but did not find any clear moments – which was a theme throughout the game – even when we were in top. I have watched the Campbell one back and it looks to be more of a penalty than the Seriki one – I think there is definite contact but he does kind of fall quite theatrically. I think VAR might give that if they look back at it. I certainly do not think the ref did us any favours last night and the marginal calls – especially for a home team – went against us.
We certainly did not deserve to lose and the stats on shots/possession/XG seem to all in our favour, but we were not ruthless and did not take the big moments. Coventry’s win felt like how we did at times last season. Wilder is right – the team we had last season probably sees the game out- with more experience (Souza, Anel etc). We are more entertaining but not getting the results. However, we continue to struggle (did last season) when we played the top teams (lost to Leeds/Burnley and also now Boro/Coventry).
I came out and thought that was almost certainly it for the season – if it had not been before – it is way too much to do now and we need to be almost perfect. I cannot see that – with our poor away from and us throwing in a bad performance every 3 or 4 games – means we will not go on the run we need. There is way too much traffic between us and 6th. I think we will start to at least plan to next season and think about who may be here and who we need to move on. Money will be tighter and I do expect some departures (maybe Hamer and one of Peck/Brooks) but we should have a fair amount back and hope we can lose some of the players not good enough and bring in some quality additions but will be more about wheeling and dealing with the parachute payments going.
It is annoying as Coventry did not look that great but have a way of playing and have found results and have the clinical element at both ends. We looked a nice side but one that cannot quite finish games or beat the better teams. It was still entertaining mind and despite another poor referee performance, I largely enjoyed the game despite the result.
