The Blades were defeated for the first time in 6 games as they missed out on extending their good run after losing at the Hawthorns on Friday evening. United were well in the game first half and had the better chances with Hamer testing Wildsmith and Campbell and Bamford having opportunities but the visitors never came out after the break and the home side upped the tempo and quality. Goals from Heggebo and Grant gave the Baggies a thoroughly deserved victory and in truth they could have won by more. It was the complete antithesis of the victory against Stoke just under a week ago, as an opponent won all the individual battles after the break and United simply could not respond and in the end were well beaten. After the 5 wins on the bounce, the Blades have served up two extremely unconvincing performances. Granted there has been illness and injuries but all teams must deal with this in the Championship, where the games come thick and fast. United showed once again a weak underbelly as they went under after the break – continuing to be look so vulnerable after the half time break. The talk of the playoffs now surely will be shelved as United are far closer to a relegation fight and must try and move towards a position of comfort before any thoughts of anything higher can be entertained.

United made several changes again as McGuiness, Riedewald, Hamer, Brooks, Campbell and Bamford came in. There was still no place for Sydie Peck but McCallum was back on the bench joining Arblaster and Chong.

The game began with both teams feeling each other and neither side getting the ascendancy but Cooper had to be alert to take a cross from the right. On 6 minutes the Blades had a great early opportunity, as Soumare did well to win the ball and Campbell found Hamer. The midfielder was in the clear but his fierce effort lacked direction and was pushed away by Wildsmith. For Hamer this was a good chance and he perhaps should have done better. Soon after Hame and Burrows combined to win a corner and Brooks kept it high up the field – with the Blades the better side in the early going.

Wildsmith’s clearance with his feet lacked height and Hamer headed it back from where it came but it did not have the legs to find the unguarded net. West Brom had offered little as an attacking force but Styles had a header at the back post saved comfortably by Cooper. The Baggies did have a chance as Grant stood up Seriki and sent the ball over and Johnston hit it fiercely and it hit the back of Burrows – who knew little about it. From the corner Diakite headed the ball over as Cooper got caught under the ball.

West Brom were now back into the game and it was much more of an even contest but from a break United should have done better again. Hamer played the ball through and Campbell was in the clear but he took too long to make a decision with Bamford over and Phillips got back to deny the strike.

Diakite took too long and his dithering saw Soumare win the ball again, in a much-improved performance from the midfielder, but Campbell rather fired it at Bamford, who still had time to do more than try an nonchalant flick which was straight at Wildsmith.

Cooper slipped as the ball came forward and had to kick it out from an almost seated position, as he examined the turf beneath him that caused the fall. Johnston had an angled effort at Cooper after some patient build up from the home side before Campbell showed his ability to run behind at the other end but as it dropped, Soumare took too long and then blazed over from a wide position.

Brooks sloppily conceded possession on half way and it led to the Baggies winning two corners in quick succession and the second saw a header blocked but just before half time the best chance for the home side came. The ball was lofted forward and it dropped for Heggebo but the striker hit it well over the bar from a really good position. The half time whistle came not long after this.

The home side came out of the blocks flying after the break and United’s poor starts to second halves of games continued to be their Achilles heel. United have the worst record of any side in the division – by some distance and this continued as they conceded on the 49th minutes. The ball was played clear into the middle and Hamer could not win the tackle and Burrows could not react. It was played down the right-hand side and Campbell sent over the cross that saw HEGGEBO completely unmarked and he swept home easily.

Rather than see a reaction from the visitors, the opposite happened and West Brom continued to swarm all over the Blades. United were not winning first or second balls and Grant nearly got in again. Johnston sent another ball over and then Price had a shot deflected away.

It was a dominant performance from West Brom now who had really upped the tempo. Arblaster and Chong replaced Soumare and Brooks but had not been on the pitch long when United conceded yet again. It was not a shock really when the second goal came on the hour. Hamer’s blind flick did not come off and the ball was moved up the field. GRANT and McGuiness converged on the ball and the defender went to the deck looking for a foul but nothing was given and the forward smashed the ball home off the underside of the bar.

On 65 minutes Diakite should have made it three as the ball came over before soon after Price was in but his shot went wide. It was remarkable how a game that United had been arguably the better side in the first half, now had become completely one sided. Player lauded a week ago, Brooks and Seriki, looked a shadow of those performances and Hamer was guilty of cheaply giving possession away. The midfield for the Blades could not seize on any loose stuff and West Brom were the only side looking like scoring again.

O’Hare and Cannon came on for Riedewald and Campbell on 70 minutes but it continued to be one way traffic. West Brom broke again and Heggebo got away from Tanganga – with the ball across and McGuinnes guilty of ball watching yet again. O’Hare had an appeal for a spot kick as he seemed to have his legs taken away but again the referee played on. United had been poor but two big decisions had gone against them. Bamford came off for Ings but United had not tested Wildsmith at all and Johnston sent another ball across that was close to being finished by Heggebo again but Tanganga got a flick to deny the third goal.

Ings had half a chance but was blocked out before Chong and Hamer sent balls in that were cleared but as the game entered the final few minutes, it was too little, too late. The outstanding Johnston came off for Iling Junior before the game entered 5 minutes of stoppage time. United had men in the box but took too long to make decisions and Arblaster had an effort well off target as it came across from Burrows. The final whistle came and United’s unbeaten run was over and in truth they were well beaten after a desperately disappointing 2nd half performance.

United – First half we were fine. Had a few chances and expect Hamer, Bamford or Campbell to take three decent opportunities – at least one maybe? West Brom had one good chance right before the break but overall we were the better side I thought and the midfield won the battle and we looked a threat. We were not hugely troubled at the back. I felt if the game went on in the same way, we would probably win or at least get a draw. However, the 2nd half we were awful. As bad as any half this season. We did not win any headers, tackles, loose balls and simply wilted. It was like the Preston game and a few others. We concede so many goals 45-60 and did again tonight. West Brom upped the tempo, played higher up the field and we had no answer. The midfield did not win a single tackle and then the defence was sat so deep that we invited pressure. There was no out ball up top and the front 4 offered no movement or get out. I thought individually and collectively we were pathetic after the break. Players were jogging rather than running and then when balls dropped, we never got to it. The first goal summed it up. Loose touches and then lose two 50-50’s and then way off the man out wide and then when it comes in, centre backs static. This continued and they could have had more before the 2nd. McGuiness could have been clipped but there is an argument he trips over his own feet too. He does go down quite easily and we have seen this before with him. Some refs do give this but he needed to be stronger even before the coming together. After this goal, the game was done. They could and should have had more. We made lots of changes but it made no difference. Chong offered more than Brooks and O’Hare at least got involved but it was only the last 5 minutes we even attacked really. Up to about 85 minutes, other than the O’Hare appeal which could have been given –did we have an attack? It was poor. Wilder will blame schedules and tough weeks – and may have a point but they had lots of energy and all Champ teams have these sorts of turnarounds between games. Sadly, we saw the same issues with lack of running stamina and the weak mentality which saw us lose so many games in the first few months. Some of the same issues came back to the fore with teams running through the middle, crosses coming in unopposed and lack of marking in the middle. West Brom could have scored 2 or 3 more. It was so one-sided 2nd half and we looked like we had nothing to give which is a worry when they seemed so energetic. Overall, a big wake up call and calms down the playoff talk. They were only a few points above us but over the course of this game looked a better side and with more dangerous forwards. The nature of the Championship is you can beat a team one week well and then lose the next week in the same fashion. This is why it will be really hard for us to get near the top 6. We probably have a week like this one for much of the season and that sort of form will see us about mid table or just below. We did have a good run of wins but over the course of the season, players have lacked the consistency for us to really go on a big run we would need over the next 25 games. It is too late sadly I feel. I just hope we do not get sucked back into a scrap as we are still close to those bottom places. The likes of Seriki and Brooks showed why they have probably not been regulars as they were as bad tonight, as they were good last week. Hamer a major disappointment – he has had a really poor season and his value is probably diminishing week by week with him being out of contact of course too. McGuiness did well last week but proved this was a one off as mostly he has looked like he has tonight and Tanganga was quite erratic too. Burrows and Cooper continue to look shadows of the player’s they were of last season. I also thought we got nothing really from the forwards tonight and when they had decent chances they fluffed them. We missed Peck and to me I’d have O’Hare in (even over Hamer) but Wilder continues to tinker with things. I worry that he has brought Arblaster back too soon -looked miles off it again to me.

It happens, you can have bad performances and maybe things just took a toil and we had no energy but you have to be better than that and make no excuses if you are serious about moving up the league and thinking about any playoff performance. The second half performance really should not be excused when opponents just wanted it more and showed far more quality when it mattered. We tossed the ball away constantly and never showed any real belief to get anything after we went behind. We have some tough games over the Xmas break and have 2/3 away so we need to bounce back quickly as you do not want 1 loss to turn into 2 and then 3 and then we are really back in a relegation scrap. It is frustrating that after such a great few weeks we have served up two nothing sort of performances and in the end but for Cooper in the week, could have ended up with zero points.

Ratings:

Cooper 5/10 – Another unconvincing performance. They put crosses right under his bar knowing he cannot get there and seems to be almost unable to get off the ground. Could have had a few goals from such moments where he go nowhere near it. His kicking was poor again. Not much chance on the second but first does go in near post but that is nitpicking as he was unmarked and he was close range. They had other chances but cannot recall many good saves he made – they just missed them?

Seriki 4/10 – Not great tonight. Poor touch and never offered anything forward wise and got caught out defensively. He just did not look comfortable and kept running into trouble. Just seemed to go looking for the ball and overran it or did not find the right cross.

Burrows 3/10 – Looks miles off it. He started ok and a few decent crosses in but 2nd half he does not get to a loose ball and then throughout he does not get close to his man. His touch at the moment is so loose and then defensively his positional play is all over the place. Offered little going forward too. Reminds me of Enda Stevens when he suddenly seemed to lose half a yard and his confidence just went. McCallum will be back but worrying that it is not just a few games but a long stretch where Burrows has been poor.

McGuiness 2/10 – First half he was ok really but then on the Heggebo chance he was stood watching. This continued second half on the goal. He just has to react and go across. What is he doing?! He just stands there and does nothing. Good centre backs read games and sense danger. He seems dopy and slow to understand where to go and when. The second goal he may have been clipped but there is an argument he trips over his own feet also – he looked weak and clumsy before this even happened. After this he went to pieces – constantly losing his man, not marking and giving the ball away. He did well v Stoke, but the greater body of evidence from the games he has played shows he is not good enough. Bindon had done ok the last few so surely must come back in, if Mee is still out.

Tanganga 3.5/10 – I have been worried by his performances at times. He shows pace and strength and you think he looks a good centre back at times but then he looks all over the place and miskicks or loses his man. The goal he could also have reacted. After this he did some strange things. He was better than McGuiness but still had a really bad second half too.

Riedewald 4.5/10 – First half fine and helped control the game for us and was nice and sensible. After the break did not see him at all and they completely dominated midfield. Did not notice him till he got subbed.

Soumare 4/10 – He did ok to start the game and was able to win some tackles that led to chances and used it ok too. As the game went on, became decreasingly effective. He blazed one over the bar and made some poor choices with the ball. After the break we got completely outrun and outworked all over the field.

Brooks 3.5/10 – Great last week but mostly ineffective tonight. Had a few bits of interplay early on and really should have tested a slower player in Styles but got further and further back and lost the ball a few times that put them on the attack. Not in the game second half at all.

Hamer 4/10 – Had a great chance early on and would probably expect to score but he hit it at the keeper. He had a few decent bits first half but also sloppy with the ball too. He at least was involved but after the break other than the daft flick that led to them breaking and scoring (did this in the week too – led to Norwich goal) did not get hold of the ball and ineffective. He is not really taking games by the scruff of the neck. We weirdly looked better with O’Hare playing - in terms of the balance but are back to being wide open again in the last few games. I think he has had a poor season -not helped by injuries and being stop start – but do not see masses of interest in January. He may go back to Holland but no Premier League clubs will sign him. If we do sell him we will struggle to get close to even 10 million I believe. I would not be devastated if he moved on and we recouped some cash. A real talent but does not do enough in games and we need him to really get hold of things and not sure he does.

Campbell 4/10 – Looked lively first half as he got down the sides but made poor choices when well placed. Should have done better with two runs and took too long. He did look a threat at least but then 2nd half barely saw him at al as they attacked all the time of course.

Bamford 4/10 – Some decent link play early but had that one good chance but tried a silly clever first time finish. I thought he was relatively quiet and not sure the front two did enough all game really but second half we did not get the ball close to them. First half they were ok as a pair and had moments when given the ball.

Subs

Chong 6/10 – Only on for 30 minutes but our most dangerous player in that he got on it, got down the side, and at least tried to be positive. Did more in 5 minutes than Brooks did in an hour.

Arblaster 3/10 – Looked way off it. Fouled his man badly twice, looked leggy and did not play many forward passes. One shot way off target. He does not look match fit. I know he needs games and first team games are of course different to 21’s but mad he has not played for over a year and has barely even played a competitive level and been thrown in. He struggled in the week and that continued today. I would have him playing 5 or 6 u21 games and said we will see if you are ready post Xmas but I am not on the medical team. The evidence is, that he is a long way off being ready and the pace of the game seemed too much for him.

O’Hare 5/10 – At least got on the ball, worked hard and could have got us a penalty. I would have him starting every week.

Cannon 5/10 – He put himself about and had a few flicked headers but he at least offered a viable option when crosses came in.

Ings – Only on for a few minutes at the end. One effort off the line.

Manager: Wilder 3/10 – Had a stronger team out tonight but after an ok first half, their managers words worked and they completed bossed the 2nd half. His team talks for the most part at the break are having the opposite effect on the team who come out and serve up mostly dreadful showings after the half time whistle (even Leicester we dropped off). Worrying we looked so flat and just sort of meekly slumped to a rather regulation defeat. I am concerned he said we do not need another striker as feel we still are off it at the top of the pitch but issues in the centre of defence and midfield continue to be a concern as we showed we are still rather a soft touch in these areas. Lot of work still to be done, on that 2nd half performance.

WBA – Started quite well under Ryan Mason but have tailed off badly in recent weeks and suggestions are he is under some pressure. I look at their squad and it is not too dissimilar to ours with a mix of youth, experience and players that have played a higher level – but few who are consistent/good enough to remain there. They should be higher in the league with the players they have but I do not see them anywhere higher than fringes of the playoffs really. Mason was a bold appointment – as whilst he had the caretaker gigs at Spurs- giving him a full-time job with no real experience under his belt was risky but then maybe better than the recycled merry go round we see of Championship managers or the foreign punts.

First half, they were poor and gave us chances by dawdling on the ball but got away with a few missed opportunities. Second half they were very good. I have criticised our showing but they were bang at it, won every ball and got down the side and created lots of chances. On another day, they win by more. They scored two well-made/finished goals and limited us to nothing after the break. A solid win and stopped a poor run. Will have been surprised how easy it was maybe?

Opponent Man of the Match – Grant scored a good goal and Heggebo looked dangerous but Johnston always seems to play well against us and caused Burrows all sorts of problems. Some great runs and balls into our box.

Opponent Weak link – Price has done well this season but was quite selfish and took too many ambitious shots on. Bielik could have been exploited for his lack of pace and Campbell seemed to have the run on him but we stopped playing the channel balls.

Referee / Officials – Matt Donohue. Matt F-ing Donoghue as he has been called by some Blades fans (including myself!). He was ok for large spells of the game but the 2nd goal could and probably should have been a foul – McGuiness does go over his own feet- but only after being clipped. At the other end, O’Hare has his legs taken but he gives neither. We were crap but one/both of these could have gone for us – so we did not get the big decisions.

Very poor in the second half against West Brom.a backward step.If we perform like that, we will get nowhere near the playoffs.

Can’t argue with any of that. The second half was the worst we’ve played for a very long time.

I think Hamer was as bad as any of them barring maybe McGuiness. So sloppy, absolutely useless when we don’t have the ball. I’m not sure we can play a pressing game with him in that position.

Once point of certainty: tonight was not about having 3 games in several days.

From the off, we were ok, but there was a big lack of preparedness, cohesion, forward aggression, and a complete lack of inventiveness (except for one through pass that Campbell screwed up).

Sad to say, I was ok at HT because even the way we played we could have won that game.

Instead after HT, we came out again and gave up a quick goal... then another!!!!

Except for the Stoke game, we have seen these types of performances far too many times. We had NO midfield tonight, we all know that. and they came out at HT and killed us.

I really like CW's prepgame press conferences, he sounds technically proficient, sounds very sensible... but, we again came out after the HT talk and literally got run over so something is fundamentally wrong with the overall game plan, performance consistency, and work rate on the field.

We won't be relegated but we are also only going to mid-table becaus we are consistently careless, consistency lacking in taking games by the scruff of the neck, and we have to certainly stop giving away post-HT goals.

And the number of games is not the reason for tonights pathetic performance.

A very sad toledo

Today and Tuesday both stemmed from the lack of a decent midfield. SP and JR offered a great base last Saturday, they protected the defence, looked to get the ball forward swiftly and Peck played lovely triangles on both sides which released Sericki/Brooks and McCallum/Ohare to attack. Without them the midfield was poor against Norwich and WBA, we offered less going forward and no protection to the defence.
