I was only 11 when we got relegated to the 4th division and although I avidly supported United at the time, I rarely went to matches. What is striking from the team that played Walsall is how many players remained the following season. In my memory, we had had a bigger clear-out than that. I remember us signing John McAlle who I recall was a flop, Keith Waugh, and then later Keith Edwards and even later Colin Morris. I was once in Sheffield WHSmith reading Martin Peters' autobiography. He said that he had expected to get more support from Harry Haslam. He also said that his kids got a lot of stick at school from Wendy fans. He said that relegation wasn't the saddest thing during his time here, that was the death of teenage goalkeeper Keith Solomon from Cornwall.

We didn't have a clear out at all. The only players who left were Andy Keeley, John Cutbush, Barry Butlin and Don Givens; all of whose contracts had expired and who were released. The following players remained from the relegation squad

Derek Richardson
Steve Conroy
John Ryan
Tony Moore
Paul Casey
Paul Garner
Stewart Houston
John Matthews
John MacPhail
Tony Kenworthy
Steve Neville
Trenton Wiggan
Mike Trusson
Bob Hatton
Steve Charles
Gary Brazil
Phil Jones

All except Richardson and Jones played some games in the promotion season. We had Waugh, Paul Richardson and McAlle before the start of the season and then Edwards in September. Jeff King came in Jan and Colin Morris in Feb.
