Anel gone awol.

Irrespective of his problems with his father , his national team and some of the social media abuse he has had to contend with , I am far more interested in the contribution he can make to our club having a successful season .

In this respect , the signs so far have been quite positive and more reminiscent of some of his performances in his first season with us which were often outstanding .

It is blatantly obvious that he is far more comfortable and effective in the role of centre back in a four than that of wide right in a three and , providing he is played in this role alongside the colossus that is Harry Souttar , I’m of the opinion that we would have the best centre back pairing in the Championship by some distance .

For the time being at least , he should be given the total backing of anyone who considers themselves to be a Blades fan.

Best thing about this news, the Anel puns are back on
Very unfortunate that our only song about him is a crass blue joke.
But instead of "we love Anel" , I think it would be more supportive to sing
"we love YOU Anel , we do , oh Anel we love YOU"

As someone else pointed out, he also looked really good when partnering Egan in the defense during the promotion season. A lanky but technically proficient lad like himself seems to be at his best partnering a gritty, physically imposing defender. Souttar is both of those things, and is probably the perfect partner for him that would realistically come to the Blades. I hope that PA or the new owners buy him permanently, that duo would look good at PL level.

Hearing of Anel's situation with his father is really sad, and just shows that not everything meets the eye. I've called him and his dad a cunt numerous times. One of those people is a cunt, and it isn't Anel. I completely back him to have a great season, and him saying he loves Sheffield and United has made up for a lot of last season.

We're with you, Anel ❤️

I would love to have an alternative to Anel but is there a consensus on how to pronounce Ahmedhodzic ?

In all seriousness I wonder if he will ask for name to be changed on his shirt to just 'Anel'

Depends how happy he is to continue wearing the name taken from his father I guess.

I think that's a bit harsh mate.

At the end of the day Anel has put out a public statement and chose to reveal what has been happening with his Dad. It's uncomfortable stuff (at best) but you can't blame supporters for wanting to talk about it. That is bound to play out on social media, as it has on here, and it's not realistic to expect a you tube channel dedicated to the club not to pick this up too.

Besides, the video has a very positive and supportive feel about it, and doesn't feel exploitative, in my opinion anyway.

It just didn't need to be done IMO. Especially with the "pick the bones out" reference, Hal just made himself sound and look like a vulture who cared more about clicks.

Classiest response was from the club.

I think the response to the SUW video is a bit woke ish. People become more upset about the way the news is broadcast than the actual content of the news.
I personally pick up news like this over YouTube then come on here to see a wider view. As far as I could see the video is totally respectful and Hal shows some true emotions when reading the statement.
It may well be broadcast on Sky sports at some point, do we start to criticise them too.

It’s not Sheffield United news. It’s a Sheffield United players personal issues that he felt he had to explain and then asked people to leave alone.

But there was a show to be had.
Yet here's a thread with 200 posts about it. Thankfully you have taken the high ground and not posted on it.
As far as I can see, the comments here, what The Star has printed and what SUW has said are all in the same vain. They are just presenting what Anel has said in three different media types.
It may come as a shock, but not all fans come exclusively here for their information.

No issue with YorkBlade and team reporting Sheffield United related items.

I’d say the more Sheffield United related components of this story though are:

1. Anel has effectively stepped away / temporarily retired from International Duty - the angle here could really focus on he will be playing fewer games and have less chance of being a miss through injury with absences of Egan being a recent bug bare.

2. Anel has reiterated his appreciation of Sheffield and the club and acknowledged that his reputation probably took a dent due to comments outside of his control and that he hasn’t personally been agitating for a move. The continued discussion point for this, for me, would be whether this is an example of where we can move in and extend his deal so as not to have him in the “final 12 month” club. Convo also can lead to who else we may wish to extend.

I’d prefer to favour those and perhaps just briefly mention that he’s gone public with a personal statement which can be picked up in the Star.

You can discuss the impact to Sheffield United without venturing into Jeremy Kyle territory!

Proof that the recently made up term “woke” can now be applied to any situation.

SUW etc. are damned if they do / damned if they don't. They put out a video, essentially just reading out the statement and people are upset. If they ignore news coming out of The Club people will be saying 'if these Social Media commentators want to be taken seriously, why are they not looking at (insert news of the day here)?, pft, I'll get my news from the Official Site'

YorkBlade has sunk to the levels of the gutter press by doing this, absolutely no need, preying on the personal lives of others just for "likes" is nothing short of pathetic. Hope you are proud Hal.

Fuck me this comment is just pathetic 😂

You either die a Hero, or live long enough to see yourselves become a villain lads. Yorkblade/Ramble etc

No-one is saying they should ignore it, but sensationlist crap like "pick the bones of" and the tacky thumbnail picture for the video is really unbecoming of what is still meant to be, let's not forget, a fan channel.

There’s a school of thought that you’re more likely to suffer from mental illnesses such as depression when you have money.

The thinking is that if you’re poor then all of your thoughts go into merely surviving and you don’t have the mental capacity to think about being depressed and the like.

When you move out of survival mode you start to ‘want’ rather than ‘need’ and this is where issues start to form.

It doesn’t say that you can’t be depressed if you’re in poverty as it accepts that it’s mentally draining to be battling to stay afloat, but there’s probably something in the theory that successful people with the pressures they put on themselves are likely to be unhappy under the veneer.
A simplified version of a broadly similar situation was given on the radio the other day, concerning the super-rich: ‘When they are young, they want to be rich and famous; when they are rich and famous, they want to be young’.

Anel had a very poor season last year, was it helped by the off field stuff? clearly not. Was he frequently overpowered by strong Premier league attackers? Yes. Anel was my biggest disappointment last season. I hope he gets back to the player he was before his illness last time in the championship. I hope being more settled and away from what seems a toxic relationship helps him. Based solely on last season he wasn't good enough at the top level. With a more settled home life and perhaps more importantly stronger defenders/goalkeeper around him can he step up with us if it happens? I really hope so. I'm not sure. He like Souza, is sitting in my lets see what happens this season box. I hope both continue to perform. As to SUFC you tube channels commenting on this I don't watch them but if they are not talking about this what the fuck are they for?

When l tried to take the high moral ground, l found you’d built a wall around it…..

See #222 and see Champagneblade s final paragraph for a more balanced view.

Not really, we fans have been wanting answers regarding the takeover for weeks but they hardly do anything on it or say they can't comment on it. So they are ignoring news coming out of the club.

The Anel story breaks and they are on it quick as a flash.

Hahaha, there hasn't been any takeover news coming out of the club. That's the whole problem. Nothing but rumours and speculation.

Reading it really feel for him, if his performance dropped off big time last season reading that gives quite a different perspective on why that might have happened.

Bloody hell lad. Feeling very sorry for Anel after reading that.

I've said a fair few times that I'd like him sold this transfer window because of such a poor season in the Prem... But sounds like he's got a lot going on (more than just a newborn) so I'm 100% going to forgive at forget.

Hope he has a great season and IF he gets promoted with us again, I hope he can step and up and do himself, wife and Mother proud on the biggest stage.
Just caught up on this and it explains why SUFC socials put a pic on insta of Anel with a heart emoji in the comments.

I think this goes down as another one of those 'you don't know what's going on in someones life' scenarios.

All of last season i was convinced he just didn't give a shit and wanted to force a move away, with rumours of Napoli it seemed his head was turned. In fact, it appears the opposite was true. He was struggling with the narcissist in his life, his own dad.

Brutal to read that and its a sad story with no doubt much history and many sides. Where Anel ends up is for the future, but he seems like he wants to play football and not just sit on the bench somewhere bigger taking the money.

Full support from me, like many others and i hope he continues with the recent performances to get back to his best. I am sure the club will show it's love for him if he wants to be here and shows it on the pitch.

Last season can't have been easy for him like it wasn't for the rest of us, awful performances and all that to deal with off the pitch. The international meet ups clearly were no relief for him either as he got treated like a piece of meat by the national side as well as being abused by fans.

It shows so much, once again that whilst players can go in and out of form, they never should be abused by fans on social media and the like.

Go on Anel, put in that leaders performance that we all want, we'll back you!
