Cheers-wasn't sure if they had won div 4. Obviously not going to contest what the dazzler stated...he probably knew it without searching t'net! Oh well....we would probably come second on goal difference anyway ;) a last minute defeat or something typically sufc!

Funnily enough we lost out to wolves last time we were in div 3....on goal difference was it not?!

Preston and Burnley have done it as well.

No, we remained ahead of Port Vale on goal difference, but finished 8 points behind Wolves.

Was it the season after then that we lost out on the championship through gd? Those two promotion seasons were my first as a season ticket holder....great memories (although I obviously can't remember the finites!)

Yes. In 1989-90 in the second division we finished behind Leeds on goal difference, but I don't know how big the gap was. I think it was quite large.

I didn't realise Middlesbro were in such deep trouble.

Looking at that table, they would have started their final game (against Newcastle) in the relegation places, and realistically had to win to stand a chance of staying up. And Newcastle had to win in order to have a chance of overtaking us. I can imagine things being a touch fraught at that game!

The vital top and bottom fixtures were:

Leicester v United
Bournemouth v Leeds
Middlesborough v Newcastle.

At the bottom Bournemouth started the day a point ahead of Middlesbrough with the latter in thye last relegation place. Boro needed to win to stay up abd hope Bournemouth didn't win. As it happened Boro won 4-1 and Leeds won 1-0 at Bournemouth, making Leeds champions and sending Bournemouth down. If we and Newcastle had won and Leeds lost, United and Newcastle would have gone up and Middlesbrough would have gone down.

On the promotion video Bassett said something like "with 10 mins to go at Leceister with us 5-2 up and Newcastle 4-1 down I thought "even we can't bleep it up now""

I had a similar feeling at the 2003 play off semi final second leg against Forest. With time running out we went 4-2 up, and I thought that surely even we couldn't mess this up. But we nearly did. Very soon after our fourth was nodded home by Des Walker, Robert Page managed to divert the ball into our goal (although in a more unavoidable way than Walker) and we unded up having a very tense last 5 minutes or so. And right at the end Louis Jean had an opportunity to head an equaliser, but (thankfully) directed it straight at Kenny.

They'd stuck that big lad, Hjelde or similar, up front and were lumping it towards him. My, that was nippy.

the last time we were relegated to div 3 in 87/88 we only gathered 46 points from 44 games, a 23 team league , saw us finish 21st a point behind west brom, and we went down with Reading and Huddersfield who only got 28 points

We only scored 51 goals that season

wednesday finished 11th in div 1

the following season we end up s runners up to wolves
and scored 93 goals and 84 points,,, pipping port vale on gd after losing on the last day , safe in the knowledge we needed to lose by another 9 to be caught

in a 42 game season when it was 2 points for win on our previous drop to league 1 (div3) we went down with 34 points (45 if it had been 3),

we scored 52 goals in that season

But before this season, we had never before contrived to lose as many as 11 home league games in a single season.
